Why can't I pan all the way to one speaker?

This may be a stupid question, i'm on Logic Express 9, and i'm sure there is no way Apple could have let this slip by for 9 WHOLE VERSIONS, but I can only pan a track to the left to 64, and to the right to 63.

Why can't I pan ALL THE WAY to one speaker and not the other?

I feel like i'm going crazy!

And i've checked, i'll pan all the way, to 64, to the left, and i turn off my left speaker and I still hear it faintly coming out of the right speaker

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6)

This really isn't helpful I'm sure but I have the same problem with one side being 64 and one being 63. but even on 64 sound is faintly audible on the other speaker. I'm not sure if there is a way to pan 100% to one speaker.

Maybe you're panning a stereo track, in which case the pan control acts more like a balance control. Or maybe you have audible returns from a reverb send, for example. On a mono track, you should be able to pan hard left/right. Because Logic's pan control is MIDI based steps, you have a total of 128, so 63641 (for center) = 128.

63 + 64 = 127, which is a normal range for values (0 to 127)?

Its not unusual to have a little bleed to the other channel when fully panned one way - you may want to look at Pan Law in Project>Audio settings. I think it defaults to 0dB, which makes stuff louder at the centre position. I have mine on '–3 dB compensated' but its up to you how you want it.

the way you addressed the question, "maybe you have..." makes me feel like for you when you use Logic, and you pan, you can move it 100% to the left or right. Am I correct? And if so, have you ever experienced a track that you tried panning and it would only go to 64 or 63?

And if you have always only been able to go to 64 or 63, do you actually happen to know why it is like this in Logic when every other recording program known to man allows you to pan 100% to the left or 100% to the right?

This is a pretty basic necessity, something that is even offered on a simple 4-track recorder. How it is to complex for Logic is beyond me.

The point that John and I were making is that a range of 0 to 127 (128 value steps) is commonly used for digital control and has nothing to do with percentages!

The pan law thing is just something that you can try to see if the pan controls suit you any better with a different setting.
