External firewire Drive / Oxford Chip question

Hey all,

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but...

One of the two ports on my Maxtor external firewire drive has ceased to work properly. I noticed that if I pull up slightly on the firewire cable connected to that port, I can send data to/from my computer with no problem. So, I was thinking I might just need to get a new enclosure.

I primarily use this drive to record audio using Pro Tools. Digidesign recommends using drives with the Oxford 911 chip. When I opened the enclosure and slid the hard drive out, I noticed that the Oxford 911 was on a card (PCB, or whatever you call it) that appeared to be part of the enclosure.

I always thought that the 911 chip was connected to the drive itself, and that any old enclosure would do.

So, I feel kind of stupid asking, but do I just need to buy a new enclosure that contains the 911 chip?

thanks in advance,

M

they also say you can use the 912 & 924 sets as well

the chipsets reside on the bridgeboard. the drives alone aren't firewire capable right from the factory, there is a go-between for firewire, USB, etc.

Also, what kind of drive is it & how big? depending on size & age, it may just be worth to pickup a new drive/case combo.

if the drive has a connector with a big ribbon cable with a bunch of pins on the drive, you'll need a case for an IDE drive. if it's smaller, flat tab style, then that would need a SATA compatible case.

check out macsales.com for cases & drives. I found, no matter what you buy or where, they are prone to failure. OWC (macsales.com) has really good support, so it's worth the extra you might spend there, but other vendors offer the same or similar cases. cooldrives.com has a bunch of them, so does newegg.com.
