Snow Leopard and Bose Companion 5 speakers

Hello,
I went to use my Bose Companion 5 speakers today after installing SL and found that they didn't work! I checked the sound output in the system preferences and my speakers are not there. I restarted my computer a bunch of times, powered down the Bose system and still nothing works. These speakers are supposed to be plug and play but with SL they don't seem to work!
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I have Bose Companion 2 speakers and installed SL yesterday. Now my speakers don't work. They don't show up in system preferences, the midi setup or system profile. They work if I plug them into my iPod. I tried them in the head phone plug, but the sound is not great, as it fades in and out.

These are great speakers and worked fine since SL. I'm thinking I may just uninstall Snow Leopard.

Thanks so much for that Neil! I must admit that initially when I'd bought my speakers back when i had Tiger OS they wouldn't play out of the box and someone else set them up for me. Been to busy till now to google the problem. Yay, great sound is back!

Gilliesmom, if you can't see the speakers in the Audio Midi set up- click on configure speakers (either a button at the bottom all by itself or click on the cogwheel icon for the drop down menu) while they're plugged in and that'll find them. Then set them as the output.

Companion 5 speakers are still mute after:
+ removing audio plist files from Library Preferences and rebooting
+ configuring speakers in Audio Midi setup (multi speakers recognized but clicking on the 5.1 speaker icons produced no sound)
+ resetting System Sound Preferences (Bose speakers are listed and selectable as output, but no sound)
+ selecting Bose speakers as audio source with EyeTV 2.0--the TV goes mute
+ running System Profiler which lists Bose speakers connected to iMac directly
+ unplugging and replugging power, audio, USB, and control pod cables and everything looks fine (control pod lights green, amber, and red appropriately)

The speakers were muted as soon as I had installed Snow Leopard and have been silent since, even through OSX system software upgrades. The sound of the internal speakers, though in stereo rather than 5.1, is not bad, but I really miss the subwoofer (woofer?).

Any further progress?

Bose Tech Support replied to my recent inquiry, passing the buck back to Apple:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your inquiry. Bose is aware of this situation with Snow Leopard. This is an issue with the Operating System. At this point, your best bet is to contact Apple to see if there is any promise of a solution there. Sorry not to have more specific information but I hope Apple can provide some specific information.

Thank you for contacting Bose Corporation.

No matter what you paid for the speakers, Bose can only help so far. If it is an OS problem (and it certainly appears to be one), Bose has no control. Apple is aware of the issue, and it's up to them to fix it.

In addition, it is not just a problem with Bose speakers. It has happened to me with Dell speakers and my Sony monitor headset in the past. It is usually resolved with a reboot or two, which is certainly inconvenient.

However, I must add that it has not happened in several months, so maybe the problem is already resolved.
