HP LaserJet 1020 doesn't work on SL, works on Leopard

Sigh, after upgrading to Snow Leopard, my printer became a brick. I just can't install the driver and it looks like a lost case. There is a workaround that uses Linux drivers but it requires that you upload some code every time you try to print (from command line) and that looks like a giant PITA: http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/INSTALL.osx

Will this be fixed in 10.6.1? Pretty please, Apple?

Anyone got it working by any chance?

According to HP, your printer was always a brick when the Mac is considered. Directly from their website, it is NOT a Macintosh compatible printer.

Even their driver downloads page is Windows and Linux only:

Are you sure you have a HP 1020 and not a HP 1022? I have the HP 1022, and after upgrading to Snow leopard, it was gone. Not following the recommended directions, I went to the HP website and downloaded the 1022 driver, added the printer, and it works now. The 1022 is on the list of printers that work with Snow Leopard.

Good luck!

In Leopard and previous it was possible to use the 1020 with the 1022 driver. The HP 1020 was never officially supported in OSX, but I've been using mine with my macs for two years and had no problems until I installed Snow Leopard, at which point it and the old 1022 driver both vanished.

I downloaded the new 1022 driver but haven't been able to get OSX to admit I've installed it.

I am having the same problem with my HP LaserJet P1005 and HP PSC 1210. Both worked fine with Leopard and have not worked at all since installing Snow Leopard. I downloaded the Mac drivers from the HP website for both and have tried to install them several times with limited success. The P1005 at least shows up in my printer list, but when I print something I get an error message saying "PrintJobMgr quit unexpectedly."

Any suggestions or guidance would be much appreciated!

Snow Leopard has done a real number on everybody's printers--much worse than going from Tiger to Leopard. Kind of surprising since Snow was just to be a refinement of Leopard. It sounds like just about everybody's printer has turned into a brick. I can print with my 1022 and that's about it. For scanning and any other function I used to have on my other printers, I'm loading my HP Officejet and HP Photosmart software onto my iBook running Tiger, where everything still works.

This is ridiculous. I've been a loyal HP customer for some time, but I'm not at all sure I will continue to be. My 1022 is not officially supported, nor is my P1006, which is even a current HP model. I guess it's good that Snow Leopard was only $29, since a lot of us are likely going to be forced to buy new printers.

I did some searching and I have solved the issue with the following link

http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/foomatic

if you install all three items your printer should work as it did using Foomatic, the install is easy and no need to compile anything using GCC / Xcode.

The print quality also looks improved in comparison to some of my older prints, however, I did recently install a new toner so I might just be imagining the improvement.
