Quick Time says I must have iTunes account. When I register there I'm repeatedly told I must have an area code and 7-digit phone number even though I have entered it. Don't they want me to buy stuff?

notebook, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

I have never known Quicktime to ask for a phone number.

iTunes might have a space for a phone number when setting up an iTunes Store account.

Exactly. Quick Time wants me to have an iTunes account even to download free stuff. When I fill in info for iTunes account, it repeatedly gives an error message for lack of phone number, even though I have entered one.

When you are selecting the link in the QT window it is re-directing you to the iTS - that is why you need an account. All content from the iTS - free or paid - requires an account as far as I know.

Contact iTS Customer support via the links on this page and ask for help. There is no phone support.

O.K. I'm a LOL (the first word is little) with her first computer and next to no experience. Using your link I got to the same nonproductive sites I'd tried before. I know so little that I couldn't even find an e-mail address for directing my question. So I asked for a phone call and got one (though they're not supposed to). The answer is: unlike any other entry point for phone I've seen there are separate boxes for area code and number. I was trying to put everything in one box, and (as I learned) that doesn't work.
