Safari, Firefox, Opera Snow Leopard Problems

I'm having problems using any browser on snow leopard. Whether it's firefox, safari, or opera, each browser freezes randomly, usually when there is javascript or flash content present on a site. I'm not sure what's wrong with my system..any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried to update Java & Flash?

I read that the Flash installer within SL is an older version and that the best thing to do is to update at Adobe's Flash site.

Also, Java released an update to their software, it may also be worth trying their update service.

I also just found this...

Best of luck.

I have the same problem here. The browser (have tried all) becomes non responsive for upto minute or two. This generally happens in the page with Java script or flash. The activity monitor says "not responding". CPU usage is roughly about 10% when browser is not responding. I generally use FF and have disabled all the extensions.

I have clean installed Snow Leopard. Apart from the browser every apps seems to be running fine and are very responsive. I have even run 5 memory intensive apps with no problem.

I have updated flash as suggested elsewhere.

I would not like to downgrade to leopard as I find SL far more responsive than leopard. Only if this browser issue could be solved........

Same problem. Snow Leopard + flash is buggy as heck, even when running the newest version of flash. Initially, safari seemed to run slower on snow leopard, then started crashing a little more frequently, and now it crashes anytime it's on a page with flash, and sometimes freezes immediately upon startup before I even navigate to a page (my home default is Top Sites, not a page). The crashes have only become more frequent, now anytime I use a webpage with flash it crashes safari (same with firefox).

I have repaired the disk permissions in Disk Utility several times, basically every time I run a browser with flash, tons of new permission flaws are created, repairing them does not solve the problem. On my latest repair permissions attempt, I also received the following message:

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

(I have no idea what that means but I certainly did not mess around with this ARD Agent myself)

Definitely do not upgrade to snow leopard until they fix this problem! Of course you can disable flash and it will work, but if you use most any interactive or video content at all, you need flash to use it, rendering internet browsing on safari basically text reading only (and lots of news sites are laden with flash anyways, like the NY Times, nyt.com = spinning wheel of death). Personally, I am studying for the GMAT, a computer based test, and now I am unable to take any online practice tests on my own computer because they all use flash! This is unacceptable and extremely frustrating.

The SUID...ARDAgent... message you report from repair disk permissions is of no consequence. Put the report line in google and read the official apple comments on this. Of course, if you are getting a lot of permission errors that are not mentioned in the Apple list then you may have a problem child in your system somewhere.

You seem to think that repair permissions is the key to solving OS problems. Be careful about this assumption. It is rare for permissions to need regular repair and it is more likely to be a faulty installation somewhere. I would install SL again and then do a restart when the installer is finished to see if that helps straighten things out.

BTW, I find that the most up-to-date Webkit downloads help me avoid any problems when browsing. It's always a work in progress, but is significantly more up to date than the SL bundled version of Safari.

Nothing seems to work to solve the browser problem in SL. Have tried all Flashblock+No script+latest webkit+latest flash player+ permission fixing with OnyX.

Strangely SL only gets unstable when browser is on.

Even a windows 7 in my bootcamp has no problem.

I will downgrade to Leopard as it is impossible to continue with browser problems.

It is absolutely shocking that Apple would release this Snow Leopard with such MAJOR problems inherent. When their own browser does not work properly with Java and Flash, how is that a viable browser? I couldn't even upload a video to YouTube after installing SL. In addition, if Apple decided to arbitrarily disable AppleTalk, they should have really warned end users. I installed SL on my computer at work only to find that most of the printers were no longer available. I know that AppleTalk is ancient, but surprisingly, some companies still use it for virtual printing to high end plate makers in the printing industry. I can only express my deepest dissatisfaction with this abysmal release. They should have tested it much longer to work all of these problems out.

Delete all your third-party hacks/plug-ins for those browsers and you won't have any problems.

I have to agree, if you are using any hacks or spin offs, then they may be to blame.

I am hack free and have had NO issues whatsoever.

Granted a few programs, all third party have had to be updated and even those have gone smoothly. And believe me, I do not have the luck of the Irish. I was convinced something would bugger the SL upgrade.

Another suggestion may be to try Main Menu (Version: 4.0.2), it's a maintenance app that may reset any corruptions and clean out any collected junk that you may have. Worth a try if you have ran out of other options.

Best of luck.

I have downgraded to Leopard although it felt more like an upgrade after Snow Leopard! Not only did Firefox freeze continually, so did Photoshop CS4 and eventually the finder froze and I couldn't even force quit. I earn my living as an Illustrator using Photoshop, Illustator and Painter, I've always used macs and will continue to do so but I won't be so quick to upgrade the os in future.

Downgraded to Leopard. Problem solved.

Apple gets by €29 from me for no reason. If one has to think so much about which piece of software (among 100s, and removing softwares are often financial loss) is causing thier upgraded OS to crash, then it is better to use Linux. Thinking and exploring time is compensated by no charge OS.

By the way, Windows 7 was perfect under bootcamp in Snow Leopard. And, Snow Leopard was very good until it started behaving naughty.
