Not Enough

Hey Y'all.

I'm using my personal MBP 17" bought just before the release of the unibody mac, for work and now my screen isn't big enough to accommodate all the windows I have.

Someone suggested I request the new 24" display but I've read that it does not work with the previous generation 17". Once and for all is this true?

And finally, technically, what are other MBP users using. Not an opinion question, more of a factual one 🙂

Thanks everybody!

Macbook + 20" Intel iMac 2GB 250GB 256vram (R.I.P. 14-inch ibook G4 1.25gb), Mac OS X (10.5.5), 30GB Photo/ 2GB Nano/ 1GB Shuffle (orange)/ 4GB Nano (silver)

You should probably get the 30". First, the new 24" Apple Cinema Display is compatible only with the new unibody models that have DisplayPort output. So, you can get a 30" ACD (which has a DVI cable to connect directly to your MBP), or you can get a display from another manufacturer. I use my 17" pre-unibody MBP with a 24" Dell and a 22" Samsung. However, the Apple 24" LED, and all 24" and smaller displays, are 1920x1200. That's the same as the high-resolution option for the 17" MBP (if you got that), and only a little more desktop real estate than the 'standard' res for your model (and mine), which is 1680x1050 (30% more, to be specific). So, if your complaint is that you don't have enough room for all your windows, a larger monitor (with larger pixels) is not the answer. You need more resolution - the 30" ACD is 2560x1600 (which is 130% larger than the standard 17" pre-unibody MBP resolution). Note that you can also get 30" 2560x1600 displays from vendors other than Apple - Dell and HP have them, probably others, too. for less $.

hey neuro, thanks for your comments.

Given this is an apple forum I'm not sure how quickly we'll be flagged when discussing other brands, so I'll leave that to a "google search" later on 🙂 As for your information regarding the resolution real estate, thank you I found it extremely valuable.

It is something I did not take into serious account and will push work to provide me with the appropriate screen. I don't see why my personal MBP's screen life-cycle is being used to provide services to others with no compensation.

All the best Neuro.
