I just want to use the Built-In audio devices for the Mac Mini. I was using the toslink f/o cable. so there are zero selectable devices in the [references pages at all - not even the built in ones to support the built in sound card within the mini itself. That being the case I dont have any proprietary s/w to load as it is all apple.

If there is a way to reintialise the software to detect the sound card hardware on board the make that would be helpful.

I am having the exact same problem of "No output devices found" on my brand new macmini.

Have tried every possible solution I could find on the net.
a) First I tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM by pressing the required keys while booting. Didnt work. b) Next I tried the Hardware Diagnostics using the diagnostics utility on the snow leopard "Application" disk. Hardware test report "All ok". c) Next I tried downgrading/reinstalling snow leopard without erasing the partition. No use, d) so finally backedup the entire hard drive, deleted the partition and reinstalled snow leopard, still no audio!!! No audio output device, no sound, rest everything work normal.

Its not even a month I've got this mac mini and I am going thru all this. Today plan to give to apple service center.

Very dissapointing.

I'm sad to report that nothing I have tried thus far has worked. I actually reinstalled Leopard and STILL have no audio. Here's a little FYI though; I can get audio through the headphones, it's only wheni try the speakers do I not have any audio output. After a phone call to Apple all they could recommend was to take my laptop to the Apple store nearest me and let them mess with. Thorougly disappointed and ****** off.

If nothing is plugged into the audio out jack, then you should be showing one device in the Sound Preference panel under Output.
Internal Speakers -------- Built-in Output

If nothing is shown there, remove these 2 files and restart.
1. com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
2. com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist

The above files are located in Library>Preferences>Audio

Update:

Syetm profiler told me I had no sound device. I did the PRAM thing and the plist thing. no help.

I then pulled opened the mac up and checked to make sure the daugther boards were properly seated ... I was desperate.

When I rebooted the machine, it came up WITH SOUND. I dont think it was me opening the box as it could have also been me booting the machine up with no toslink f/o cable plugged into the output jack.

When the mini restarted I got the bing over the system speaker, and once the machine had started the audio worked perfectly and I plugged the cable back in.

Since the sound has been working I have lost it a couple of time since, particularly after using DVD player. this has ofetn happened as I think it gets tripped up when swthching between 5.1 audio out and normal output. Again this sorts itself out if rebooting with the output cable disconnected.

I hate these type of issues as it seems so erratic. Let me know if starting with the cable out sorts things out.

I found the same problem with my MacBook Air when I upgraded to Snow Leopard. It may have started after the 10.6.1 upgrade. Things were working fine before, I could listen to iTunes, Skype was somewhat working. No all audio has gone "poof." I doubt it's a hardware issue as my iSight also no longer films. Both seem to have disappeared. Where is it?

Reseting Pram hasn't worked
Hardware Testing with holding down "D" on restart didn't work
Reseting SMC while holding down shift-command-option, couldn't tell if it worked

Besides saving space on my MAB, the Snow Leopard upgrade has been a disaster. (Have to reset fonts, slows down/crashes Office '08, Skype glitchy, CoolBook Controller no longer working - MAB at 135F now, plus no sound or video!! )

Any help appreciated.
