Snow Leopard and Canon MX860 ... More help please!

I've followed various threads concerning Snow Leopard and its incompatibility with the Canon MX860 printer/scanner. I have now downloaded the latest printer driver from Canon and the printer functions seem to work normally now on my wireless network.

I have some connectivity with the scanner, but the only way I can get it to scan is by going through System Preferences - if I try going via the "Canon Solution Menu" I get the error message "Cannot communicate with the scanner". Also, on the MX860's display panel the only option shown is the USB connection - it doesn't offer any PCs so, I guess, it's not finding my wireless network, even though the printer part of the machine is.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks.

I have been using Preview to scan across the wireless network with my MP980. Open the Preview application and select File > Import from Scanner > Include Networked Devices. Now when you select the Import from Scanner menu again, you should see the Canon appear under the grayed-out heading of Networked Devices. Select this and the scan window will appear. It will do an automatic pre-scan of the document and allow you to select the portion of the document you want.

Fair enough. If you want to use the Canon Solution Menu, which is just a front-end to the other applications such as Easy Photo Print and MP Navigator, then you may have to wait there are versions for 10.6. I've never used any of these applications so I don't know if there are any workarounds available for 10.6.

As for initiating the scan from the control panel, this will rely on the Canon IJ Network Tool to know where to scan the file to. From reading another post, there is a version 2.7.0 that supports 10.6, however I haven't found it yet on the Canon Aus web site.

Thanks again for getting back to me. If it were just for my use I would be happy to use the workaround you suggest, but I need to make it simple and repeatable across all our computers, iMac. Macbook Pros and PCs, so need to be able to use the printer panel and a desktop icon. I guess I'll just have to be patient.

How to install Canon MX860 on a Mac with Snow Leopard also running Parallels 4.0.

First let me say Canon Technical Support didn’t help, Canon told me Parallels was the culprit and I should uninstall it and try again, the Forums offered a lot of solutions that didn’t work either. DONT UNINSTALL PARALLELS!

First you need to download and install printer drivers direct from apple, follow this link. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL899

Don’t even bother with the drivers on the Canon site, they are a waste of time.

Next install cannon software from their website at: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDet ailTabAct&fcategoryid=334&modelid=18121#

You will need to download and install the following from the Canon Site:
MP Navigator EX 2.1 Opener (Mac OS X 10.6)
Solution Menu Ver. 1.4.0 (Mac OS X 10.3/10.4/10.5/10.6)
Easy-PhotoPrint EX Ver. 3.0.5 (Mac OS X 10.2/10.3/10.4/10.5/10.6)
Canon PIXMA Wireless Setup Assistant (Macintosh)
IJ Network Tool Ver. 2.7.0 (Mac OS X 10.3/10.4/10.5/10.6)

as you install the various downloads, refer to your instruction manual you got with the printer for help.

If during your set up you printer does not show up wireless I have found out that rebooting your computer usually solves the problem, after rebooting, go to System Preferences >> Print and Fax>>click on the + icon then “Canon MX860 series (Mac address)” it may take up to 30 seconds for it to show up. you should be ready to go by this point.

My printer works flawlessly both with my MacBook and my Windows PC. This pinter is awesome! Thanks Cannon for a great printer, but not so good technical support.

Any updates on this? Canon recently updated their driver page. What a mess! What's a CUPS, ICA, yada yada driver.

I could not get the MP Navigator software to run with the apple driver.

Note, I can print and scan fine, but cannot get wireless setup. I'd like to be able to run the canon tools to get more control of the printer from my mac.

I'm trying different things and will update this post if I have any success.

Update: Well I got everything working so far.

After installing the various tools mentioned above I could not get MP navigator to work.

I downloaded the following driver.

MX860 series MP Driver Ver.1.0 for Network (Mac OS X 10.6)
mx860sosxns10ea7-3.dmg

After installing this and rebooting MP Navigator runs and the settings applet does more. I can now go to settings, printers, select the printer and hit "Options & Supplies", then the Utility tab, "Open Printer Utility" button. From there I was able to select the printer and hit "Network Settings" and it allowed me to configure it for wifi. The driver version listed in options is now 10.26.1.0.

I hope this helps someone. Basically I'd say just jack with it until you get all the options working.

Hi,

I am running Mac OS X Leopard version 10.5.7 on a MacBook3,1 with a wireless network using an AirPort Extreme. I was able to print wirelessly to my new Canon Pixma MX860, but my Macbook was unable to communicate with the MX860 scanner. Interestingly, though, the MX860 scanner could communicate just fine the other way with my Macbook because I was able to manually scan from the MX860 console and have scans wirelessly sent as PDFs to my Macbook.

Here's what I did to scan wirelessly to the MX860.

I used Easy Install from the accompanying Canon Pixma MX860 Setup CD-Rom disk *version U1.4* (purchased the MX860 on March 22, 2010) and followed all of the setup instructions in the Getting Started for Mac manual. In my case, I have a wireless LAN network with one access point, the Airport Extreme, but I would follow the instructions that are appropriate for your setup.

I went to the Canon MX860 driver page http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDet ailTabAct&fcategoryid=334&modelid=18121 and selected the MAC OS system files from the drop-down menu.

I downloaded:

_*MX860 series Scanner Driver Ver. 14.11.1*_ (Mac OS X 10.3/10.4/10.5/10.6)
mx860sosxsd14111ea8-2.dmg
(I didn't remember this file from the Easy Install, and I was unable to select this from the Navigator EX Scan menu, so I figured there was something wrong with it)

_*MP Navigator EX Ver. 2.1.2*_ (Mac OS X 10.2/10.3/10.4/10.5/10.6)
mpnexosx212ea8-2.dmg
(The version that came with the CD-Rom was an older version, 2.1.0, I think)

I installed both the Scanner Driver and the updated MP Navigator EX. The computer restarted after installing each program, so there were two restarts.

I opened the Solution Menu from the dock, chose Scan/Import Photos or Documents from the menu, and the Solution Menu opened MP Navigator EX (now version 2.1.2). From the MP Navigator Ex menu, I chose Scan/Import Photos/Documents (Platen), selected the Document Type, and voila, perfect wireless platen scans. When I checked the "Use the Scanner Driver" box, the Scanner Driver brought up more detailed scanning options. I was also able to scan a stack of documents using the ADF.

I know that this is a Snow Leopard thread, but I came across this thread when I did a search on exactly the same problem, so I wanted to post my solution in case it helps others. I think that the solution to your problem should be similar. If the two downloads specifically mentioned above do not help, perhaps try downloading and installing all of the other most up-to-date drivers/software on the Canon 860 page until something works.

I think I'd only installed the MX860 series Scanner Driver 14.11.1 and MP Navigator EX 2.1.2 software, which I'd downloaded direct from the Canon USA site before today, and could scan wirelessly from my Mac via both MP Navigator EX and Preview as previously described. I just installed the MX860 series MP Driver 1.0 for Network (also downloaded direct from Canon USA site) and my Mac now shows up on the printer screen, and I've confirmed I can now scan to PC. I agree that it seems the best solution to getting the MX860 working wirelessly is to install the drivers and software in steps, testing functions after each, and once everything is working, you'll know that the next installation, e.g., Canon Solution Menu, is the likely culprit of any problems you're experiencing and that it may be best to wait to see if Canon releases any updates.

My problem, however, and the reason I was searching the forums in the first place, is that MP Navigator EX crashes every time when quit, i.e., the "Problem Report for MP Navigator EX" window pops up. This is super annoying, and I've confirmed that when scanning wirelessly from the MX860 using the printer controls, the same thing happens... after each scan! I can initiate a new scan from the printer without closing the window and it'll work, but I'm always left with that window. Of all the problems I've read about people having with getting the MX860 working wirelessly on Snow Leopard, I've never seen this one. I suppose I should consider myself lucky!?!

Snow Leopard and Canon MX860 ... More help please!
