trying to open scanner session....

Like many others, I have an HP Deskjet F380 all-in-one. Printing is fine. Trying to scan, I get 2 messages.
1- Trying to open scanner session
2- failed to open a session on the device

I assume, eventually, there will be a fix from HP?

Hi John,
The very 1st thing I did before installing SN, was to uninstall my HP printer drivers. SN found and installed the driver for my HP F380 all-in-one and it printed fine but would not scan. I have tried your suggestion, and several other suggestions, including downloading 10.6 drivers from the HP website--still no scan. If I solve this, I will repost. Meanwhile...

I'm having the same problem as many others on this thread and on the HP support forum. After upgrading from 10.5 to Snow Leopard, I deleted my HP 6300 series software. SL automatically reinstalled the printer driver, so the 6310 AIO prints just fine. But, I've tried all the solutions here and on the HP support page. None work. I even tried manually deleting the printer drivers and reinstalling them. I get this warning message: "Some of the software for the printer is missing. You may not be able to print to “HP Officejet 6300 series.” Please reinstall the printer’s software." So, it seems that scanner/TWAIN drivers are missing from OS 10.6 and/or HP hasn't yet created them.

I solved my own problem, sort of. I reinserted my Snow Leopard installation disk and then went to the Optional Installs package. One of the Custom Installs available there is Printer Support. I loaded "All Available Printers," after which Mac OS recognized my HP 6310. So, apparently, there are drivers in the optional installations package that don't get loaded automatically with the basic Snow Leopard install. Perhaps the missing drivers can also be obtained through Software Update. I did that too, but can't tell if it affected my connection since the scanner worked both before and after I updated the HP software.

In OS 10.5, I typically scanned using Acrobat. Even though my scanner is now working, Acrobat can't find it. This is odd because if I scan through the Print & Fax screen in System Preferences, I can scan to Acrobat. After the scan, Acrobat opens and shows the scanned image in neat old .pdf format. But it won't scan directly, and the System Preferences route takes a lot of extra key strokes. I long for the old HP Director.

Hi Bea/NJ

I hopefully I have a fix for you! I hope this helps, if it does please rate my solution, thank you.

1: Turn on your printer/scanner.

2: Go to System Preferences > Print & Fax, in the left hand column remove your printer by highlighting it and clicking the 'minus' button. Then add your printer by clicking the 'plus' button. Another box pops up and a list of your available printers will be displayed. Pick your printer you want to add and it will then be configured.

3: After this, click on the 'Scan' button and then click on the 'Open Scanner' button.

The scanner should start up and a dialogue box should appear, you should be ready to go!
