iTunes 9 does not work on Mac Pro with Snow Leopard

I just downloaded and installed iTunes 9. However, when I run it, nothing happens. Clicking on the icon on the dock shows "Application not responding". Previous version of iTunes (8.2) was running OK.

Platform is a Mac Pro with quad-core Xeon (Penryn) running Snow Leopard. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Opening it from the applications folder end up with the same behavior.

I was finally able to get iTunes 9 to start by doing the following:

1. Turn off the machine
2. Remove iPod from the dock (3rd Gen iPod with Firewire dock)
3. Restart the system
4. Start iTunes 9

My guess is iTunes is trying to do something during the first start up that crashes while trying to talk to the iPod in the dock.
