iTunes 9 won't sync playlists with podcasts

Any playlists (smart or regular) with any podcast item will no longer sync or even be listed for syncing to any hardware (fails with iPhone, iPod, Touch). Worked perfectly fine on iTune 8.2.1. APPLE - PLEASE FIX ASAP!!

MacPro, Mac OS X (10.6)

Just sent this to feedback:

Dear iTunes/Apple people.

Whatever you have done with playlists involving podcasts for iTunes 9 was terrible.

iTunes no longer uploads podcast playlists to podcasts in the order that was intended by the user.

For example, I've got a playlist for the podiobook "The Rookie" by Scott Sigler. It would be awesome if I could load my Rookie playlist in the order by chapter. iTunes 8 and all previous incarnations of the software did that. Unfortunately this MAJOR BUG in iTunes 9 has disabled that ESSENTIAL feature.

Please restore that feature ASAP.

Thank you for your time
Kurt

I found the same thing. After talking with an Apple Product Specialist, I learned the solution: Don't use the Music tab to sync Podcast Playlists, and Uncheck the "Automatically include" option.

Apple has separated music sync from podcast sync. This is a good improvement, though confusing to those of us familiar with working around the old Podcast sync by using Smart Playlists.

After you have the Automatically include option deselected, scroll down on the Podcasts tab of your device and you'll find the list of Playlists under Include Episodes from Playlists. Verify or change the selections here of the podcast playlists you want on your device.

I was just as frustrated as you were when I discovered that most of my content was missing from my iPhone. Now it is back and I can work with my podcasts in the Podcasts tab where they belong.

The thing that annoys me about all this is that Apple didn't say anything about this. I couldn't find reference to it in iTunes help. I bought a new Nano last week, and this problem was coincidental with the first use of the Ipod, so I thought it was related to it. The solution is counterintuitive and illogical, but at least it works! Thanks for talking to Apple about it.

Let's just note that you won't see the "Include Episodes from Playlists" option under the "Podcasts" tab until you actually put some podcasts into a playlist.

So apparently the only solution to the problem of getting podcasts to play in the right order is to put them in that order in a playlist first, then manually include the playlist in your sync.

Yes, this is goofy beyond belief.

I don't know if this is related or not, and it'll take a bit of explanation: I have a regular playlist (not a "smart" one) where I put all new podcasts, audiobooks, whatever at the top in the order I want to hear them, separated by music. (The rest of the list contains podcasts and books I've only heard once, oldest first, for when I run out of new material). Anyway, starting the first time I synced with iTunes 9, it leaves some, but not all, new podcasts off this playlist on the iPod, though they're still available if I go to "podcasts" and select them there. I've restored the iPod (5th generation, I think) and it fixed nothing.
