Thanks for the workaround. I was going nuts trying to find my missing podcast playlist.

I'm currently suffering at work with a podcast-less playlist.

What a silly change, and especially to make the change in a way that changes the old behaviour. It could easily have been done with the workaround pre-applied, so that it kept behaving as it used to. Then people who didn't like the old behaviour (were there any such people?) could change it.

It seems an odd change to have made, it seems to be there for people who couldn't make playlists properly.

On a more positive note, nested rules in smart playlists are a fantastic, and much overdue, addition. I can do some serious tidying up of my playlists now, about 90% of my smart playlists are just there as 'feeder lists' for other lists.

Jim, I'm completely with you. My point was that Media Kind appears to be broken, or so non-intuitive that it's effectively broken. My "solution" was just a way to get the playlists to work for me. The other solution that folks have found doesn't seem to be that great either. Using that method, when I add a podcast I have to remember to tell iTunes to sync it. Same thing when I add a new playlist, I have to go check it so it will sync. I'll deal with it, but this a step backwards in functionality for me.

Fwiw, the fixes detailed above eliminated Media Kind as an issue for me. I've returned it as a criteria for all my Smart Playlists, and all are syncing fine now, just as they were before iTunes 9/iPod 3.1.1.

OK, got it working using above suggestions.

This is so massively unintuitive though that it must surely be a bug.

Anyway, on to tidying up my playlists thanks to the new nested rules in smart playlists.

These fixes are not working for me. I actually have 2 podcast smart playlists and one of them will not sync over. When I first did the updates it did sync but the episodes were not in the correct order so I trashed the playlist and recreated it. Now it won't show up on my iPhone 3GS.
The episodes show up under podcasts but I like to be able to listen to then one after another.
My main podcast smart playlist does transfer over but this one dedicated to a specific podcast does not.

Since you created a new playlist, did you make sure it was selected both in the music and podcast tabs, per the workaround above?

Yes it is selected in both tabs.

Have you unchecked the "automatically include.." bit? That is what seemed to get it working for me.

It makes no sense at all, I can only assume it's bug, and hope it gets fixed soon.

I wish they'd also add functionality so I could set the 'skip while shuffling' flag on podcasts to 'no' by default.

Thanks for the fix! I hope it's just temporary and it gets fixed for real.

Based on what Lance said I left the "automatically include" box unchecked.
I had seen some posts on here about problems if you use "Kind = MPEG audio file" so I took that out of my smart playlist and added a title keyword and now the playlist IS syncing to my iPhone. It's still out of order, though.

**** - I tried going back to iTunes 8.2.1 in the hopes that it would solve the issues with smart playlists and album ordering that I've been seeing since the update, but it hasn't made a difference. The sooner these things get fixed the better.

This fix doesn't allow one both to sync all unplayed episodes of all podcasts and to sync a playlist of podcasts one wants to play in order without having to manipulate one's iPhone, does it? I have a playlist of podcasts that I want to play in order while I'm riding my bike, so that I don't have to pull over and change podcasts manually when one podcast ends, but I still want all unplayed podcasts synced, not just those in the playlist.

This really *****. Using smart playlists to listen to podcasts is all I use my nano for. Who can we complain to about this problem? I thought Apple software was supposed to be easy to use and bug free!

Okay - I give in. Where is the "podcast tab"? in my iTunes, I have no "podcast" menu bar at the top, and on the left hand I have "Podcasts" listed after "Music,
Movies and TV Shows", but when I right click on that, I only get the following options: "Open in New Window" and "Export". When I right click on a specific podcast, like NYT Front Page, I don't see "Sync Podcasts" or "Automatically Include". When I open it in a new window, I do get "settings" for individual podcasts, but I still don't see these options.

Finally, I don't see any options when I right click on a playlist in the left hand tool bar.

Smart playlists no longer have the option to include by media type "podcast", so this Apple documentation is now bogus:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/

Like others have said, this "feature" is ruining my drive-time playlist, which includes several short & long form podcasts intermixed.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, and it's probably due to the frustration of something so simple that has worked for years suddenly not working, but I appreciate any pointers!

    Thank you!
