I was having the same problem with a 3rd Gen iPod showing on the desktop but not in iTunes. I quit iTunes and relaunched it and it was fine. Just saying!

That actually says quite a bit. For me and my classic 80GB, if iTunes is already running (I have it auto start up when I log in), it won't see the iPod; but after I quit and restart iTunes, the iPod showed up in iTunes. Another thing that worked was: with the iPod unconnected from the computer and iTunes not running, plug in the iPod and let it trigger iTunes to start up.

Stupid, really, but there you are.

After reading through all these posts, I thought I would try something slightly different.

My problem was the 2nd Gen Nano only appearing on the desktop and not in the iTunes sidebar.

After ejecting and removing the iPod, I closed iTunes. I then plug the iPod back in and it appeared on the desktop again.

To get it to be recognized in iTunes again, I dragged the iPod icon over iTunes. It worked.

I have the same problem with iPod Classic 160 gb. I just got a new laptop with windows7, downloaded the newest iTunes...and here I am. The iPod connects for a few seconds then windows automatically ejects it. It is not recognized in windows or iTunes.... well sort of. Under devices it shows up with the error code 21 "Windows is uninstalling this device. (Code 21)"

I've been trying this forum, Windows 7 and googling it with no luck

I stumbled into what may be a band aid solution. My classic Ipod (80MB) was not being recognized with windows XP once I uploaded Itunes 9. I found that if I do not open itunes, but rather plug the ipod into the usb connection, when the usb connection then opens Itunes, it appears to work every time. Not intuitive, but it at least leads me use my ipod classic as well as update my wifes nano, which also was having the same problem. Good luck hope this helps others to keep going until Apple has a fix

Had this problem with iPod Classic 80 GB 1.0.2 after upgrading iTunes to 9.0.2 - the program didn't see the player though OSX showed the removable icon.

I've solved this by upgrading the iPod to the latest firmware (1.1.2) through another Mac with previous iTunes (8 something) - and it now works with 9.0.2

    Good luck

On the same boat as everyone else here. Ever since i upgraded to windows 7 and itunes 9, my ipod classic just will not sync. I tried downgrading the firmware to see if that helps along with many other things, but now my ipod doesnt appear under devices. Apple seriously needs to get this sorted.

I was able to get mine to work. I have another machine with itune 8 and windows XP. I connected through that machine and updated the iPod software to version 1.1.2. Now it works on my laptop with Windows 7 and iTunes 9.

    Hopefully this helps

Same here... one year old iPod 80 Gig Classic hangs during syncing and never recovers. Also, it's not recognized by my BRAND-spankin' new iMac either. Not in iTUNES and not on the desktop.
