"If music is not playing and I am using an app, Safari for example, double clicking the Home button used to bring up music controls. Now, in 3.1.1 double clicking the home button only brings up the music controls if music is already playing."

This is not true on two counts. First, the music controls come up even if music is not already playing.

Second, some apps override this feature entirely. For example, all of PlayFirst games won't work. If *game music* is running on these apps, what I've previously preferred to do is use the iPod controls to override their music with my MP3s. But now I can't do that at all.

Apple should just be pointed to this thread, and the two others I found related to this:

(sorry, one of those links is this thread)

As others said, the more noise that is made about this, the better. Everyone should report it.

I haven't been able to get the music controls to pop up unless music is playing. Do you mean when you're waking it from being sleep and the screen is locked? I can get the controls to pop up then. But if you mean you're able to get the controls to come up even at the home screen when music isn't playing, I'd love to know what you are doing to make that work.

Please send Apple feedback on this issue:

Completely agree. There should be a options to go to the screens you want, but also to simply get the controls again.

I hope they change this back to how it used to be. where you double click button and controls show up weather music is playing or not. I really hate the new update and noticed this right away. it ****** me off

yea it does lag when you try to send feedback. the whole site laggs all the time no matter what computer you are on.

There is a work around to this "fixed bug" with out quitting your app. Instead of double tapping home hit the sleep button and then double tap the home from sleep and it brings up volume and play pause buttons. It is just an extra step. Apple please fix this. If you were trying to prevent us from playing music in apps that turn off music, there is a work around, so your efforts are usless.
  • Smudgy Level 1 Level 1
Ok might have been wrong about the work around. This only works in apps that allow music play back. But for those that turn music off when the app is started, this does not work. This Is why apple got rid of controls. Now that there are much heavier apps out there. They want to minimise crashing due to low memory caused by music being played in the background.

I agree that this change was a bad idea. I'm going to send apple feedback-- everyone else should too. The more people who complain, the more likely they are to fix it or at least make it an option we can choose. Go to

Thanks for the feedback page link. Feedback sent...

Before the last iPod Touch update, I could double-click my home button, while in another application, and have the music playback control overlay come up. This was great since I did not have to quit my application in order to pause my music or podcast. Now, I must either lock the iPod first, or switch applications to gain playback control. Ease of use should be a high priority for iPod Touch and I would request that the double-click feature be made as it was - very useful, efficient and convenient.

I might just add that you're aware that you can still have the controls come up when a song is playing, but you want them to come up when a song is paused or not selected also. (Otherwise I can just see them reading it and going "oh, this person hasn't noticed that feature in settings yet" and discounting your feedback.)
  • Terabithia Level 1 Level 1
I think most of us were annoyed specifically with that-- if you pause your song, you can't restart it without leaving your current app. Its good taht volume still comes up when something is playing, but pausing is a pretty important function too!

I am saving up a bunch of feedback to send to Apple about this new ipod and itunes software. Mostly complaints/bugs :-/

The more CONSTRUCTIVE feedback, the more likely it will get fixed.
    That's ALL we can do.

I comepetly agree I do not like what has been done with this new update. I think that it should our chooise in what our double click botton will do not limited to those chooise given but any app or function that is avaible on the iPod touch. If not back to what we have been coustom to with the music control when double cilck. There is no piont to listen to crappy game app tones. it is not what I think you mention by freedom and expresion that is your own selling point. We as loyal and greatful iTunes users have already purchesed the app why not enjoy it our own way. That is all and pardon the spelling
