Q: Disk Drive ejecting itself

The app "Jettison" fixed the problem of external drives being ejected on wakeup for me.

I have kept my Fantom Drive for 2 weeks connected to a newer MacBook Pro late 2011 without any ejection.

Used the same Firewire cable as on my problematic early 2009 MacBook Pro, the same OS.

Posible some software conflict that I have on early 2009 that is not installed on late 2011???

I have just installed “Jettison” as Zepple suggested and I have plugged my Fantom Drive back to my 2009 MB Pro. Will see if Jettison helps…

@Zepple - did you just select your drive under “Don’t unmount external disks…” or you have select something else in the Preferences?

After 8 months with this problem, I can finally say it seems to be gone since I added the disk to the Spotlight Privacy list. It's been almost 3 hours and no disconnection - previously, it ejected automatically after max. 15 minutes.

U.B. No, I do not have my disks selected under "Don't unmount external disks". In jettison I have checked remount drives upon wake-up. To get to that screen you need version 1.3 and hold down the option key while you click on preferences in jettison. In the options portion of jettison preferences I have all 3 options checked. In what to eject I have only hard disks checked. The reason I did it that way is because my disks were always ejecting whenever my computer went or was put to sleep. This way they unmount properly and remount automatically.

recently i noticed the problem happen whenever i toggle my room's fan or lights on/off!!! i think there are voltage fluctuations when i use the swithces and my powered usb hub cannot take it.

nevertheless, i have added the drives to spotlight privacy list. cause i have noticed ejection at times when i press command+space to launch spotlight! so lets see if this helps.

My drive did not eject itself for the last 2 weeks. Before it would stay mounted for 2-3 days max. Again, what I did is:

1. Kept my external HD attached to the newer MacBook Pro for 2 weeks with the same cables (this laptop never ejected the drive)

2. After that, I reconnected this HD to my older MacBook Pro that was rejecting it before and installed the suggested Jettison 2 app. (Thanks to Zepple's suggestion!). In Preferences I have only selected the first two choices under Options: Launch Jattison when you log in and Show Jattison icon in the manubar. Nothing else is selected.

So far so good, not a single problem.

I noted a consistent pattern of the drives getting ejected when i toggle any switch with the lights or the fan! I think the hub is not able to handle fluctuations in the supply when i power on or of any elecrtical in my room.

i got my line checked and there were no short circuits. i think my hub cannot take the minor fluctuations. i need a new hub asap as the frequent ejecting of the drive has corrputed my timemachine drive, yet again! its corrupted beyond the point of a disk utility repair.

CAN SOMEONE RECOMMEND ME A REALLY GOOD USB 3.0 HUB?

I´m Having issues with my  2010 13" Macbook Pro 7,1.

I made the OWC Data Doubler mod almost 1.5 years ago.

Since the mod everything has been running butterly smooth.

Disks:

OS : OWC ELECTRA 6g 128Gb SSD

MEDIA: WD Scorpio Black 750Gb 7200RPM  HD

Once i installed Mavericks the WD Disk started to self eject everytime... i reformated both disks.. reinstalled mavericks via thumbdrive (CleanInstall) and the problem still persist.

I thought the problem was the disk... so i mounted it on a external enclosure and ran a backup... it ran pefectly.

So. My other guess was the SATA Cable on the macbook pro. i order one vía iFixit with another HD just in case...

But my hopes of fixing it are still very low...

Any advice from someone with a similar problem or with knowledge of this kinds of problems?

From the past I know Apple is going to take its time to fix the issue but it will fix it once forever.

What I dont understand is why do they have to touch perfectly wprking parts of an os during each major release.

I should read this post before I buy SSD and think again.

My original idea was to use old disk as time machine. Then I have the disk ejects itself problem. Now my money was half-wasted.

Apple is not going to fix this issue.  They have had years to do so and what have we gotten?  Nothing.  Perhaps one needs to look at their market strategy and try to figure out why.  They are selling iCloud services.  Is providing reliable local storage really in their long term interests?  Call me a cynic if you like, but the proof is in the pudding.

Thank you so much for your research, I couldn't figure out why the drive out unmount on my iMac yet work perfectly on the Synology. $5 USB cable to the rescue!
