After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

After read a lot about another people had tried to restore their iPods I done something that get write. I unstilled the iTunes 9 and deleted all libriry that itunes does that should be in your music files. So I restarted the computer and intalled the final version of iTunes 8. When I plugged my iPod it crashed.. but pressing the center button and start button togheter for a while the iTunes recoganized it. I restored it.. but when it began to syncronize in some musics crashed my iPod and it sad that my hardware have unknowing problems. I guess I'll need to send it to an assintem support cause I can't stand it anymore. And I'm afraid about having serious problems in my iPod, Apple really should take a providence about those issues.

Ladies and Gents

Had the same curse of Itunes 9 and tried everything including the nil reply from Apple themselves. I tried my ipod classic on my wifes laptop that still had ITUNES 8 on it and to my delight found it still works and syncs even though I will have to rebuild my library Fortunately all was backed up. to that extent I recommend you dont use your ipod as a tennis ball or clay pigeon try a rebuild of your pc( i tried to remove all traces of IT9 with no joy) if you require ver 8 of Itunes go here

Good luck all my Ipod is saved even though a lot of work was involved and thx to all that helped this does not include Apple that were about as much use a a chocolate fireguard.

I'll chime in hear as well. iTunes 9 has toasted my 80gb iPod classic. I've tried everything: removed and reinstalled iTunes, restored iPod, rebuilt library etc. I've also tried three different computers and even on iTunes 8, the iPod will lock-up after a partial sync (anywhere from 5 songs to 1.5gb of music). My iPhone, on the other hand, works just fine.

This is ridiculous and so un-Apple. I'm wondering if the same code that's breaking the ability of the Palm Pre to sync is wreaking havoc on the iPod Classic.

I have a Classic/80GB that corrupted in several stages after installing v9.0. First my playlist on the PC (Dell PC running Vista) came up as corrupt (I lost all my artwork, etc), and then the next time I plugged in, the iPod itself was immediately borked (it hung iTunes over and over so I unplugged and poof same as everyone else).

I restored and the very next time I plugged in the iPod it borked again in the same way.

After a little trial and error and readjusting how I do certain actions (which I in no way shapr or form should I ever even have to do, nor should anyone else) I seem to have it somewhat stable, and so I thought I'd share what I did (whether or not it wil "stick" I have no idea):

1. Unchecked "load iTunes when this iPod is plugged in"

2. Upgraded to iTunes 9.0.1.x - whatever the newest release is

3. Removed or unchecked everything I didn't really need from the playlist so it would sync faster/easier

4. Sync'd

Something I noticed at this point that has been different since 9.0 is that instead of automatically releasing my iPod after the sync, I had to manually eject it. We all know unplugging without disconnecting can corrupt your hard drive. I feel this may be a big part of the issue - iTunes is not properly releasing the iPods and then destroying them.

Previously I had manually ejected, but through Vista and not iTunes. And apparently something is wrong there too between iTunes and Vista and the iPod.

In this new version it actually "advises" you to eject along with stating the sync is done.

5. I manually ejected the iPod - but this time through iTunes and not Vista.

6. Rebooted the PC (as if I was starting a new day, as I don't leave my PC on overnight)

7. Started iTunes

8. Plugged in the iPod

9. It did an auto sync.

10. Ejected through iTunes, unplugged, etc.

11. Plugged back in etc.

I've run that a few times, and as I stated at the top, it appears stable. So it seems to me that there is an issue with either the sync and/or iTunes releasing the hard drives.

They need to keep working on that and fix it so we don't have to go through these extra "super careful" steps. I want it to go back to automatically and safely releasing my iPod at the end of the sync like it used to. You listening, Apple?

This is what I did to fix both the skipping songs problem and the iPod verifying forever & not able to restore problem (because of iTunes 9):

a) I used Disk Utility to reformat my iPod while in Disk Mode using the instructions here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363?viewlocale=en_US

and here:

http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/index.shtml#backup

b) Do not unplug your iPod after reformatting (mine showed up as a firewire disk) - simply launch iTunes ( I went back to 8.2) and follow the Restore instructions here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339

iPod is recognized, syncs and doesn't skip songs anymore after that miserable experience with iTunes 9!!!

Has anyone gotten any answers about this from Apple? My 160GB Classic is out of warranty but worked perfectly until after I installed the latest iTunes version. Hundreds of us are reporting this. I've emailed them. Some of you have talked to them. What can we do about this? It's so far down on the forum list that no one even sees this. Are we just going to be left hanging? We need answers.

Matt

Did the new nano have any problems with itunes 9 or is it just the classic? I'm really worried that if I get a new iPod it'll do the same thing to it, because I want another classic - yeah, I know they're huge, but I like having all my music on it. Sigh.....this is SO annoying. It worked perfectly before I did the "upgrade" and Yes, Apple, I'm using the term very loosely. Did 9.0.1 or whatever its called help anybody?
