Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

    iTunes v 9.0.2
    iPod firmware 1.1.2 (80GB Classic)

This evening I opened up my iTunes on my Mac dual 1.25 G4, and was immediately notified that a new iTunes version was available, version 9.0.2. Naturally, I downloaded it. I am beginning to study for an MBA and found a number of helpful video podcasts in iTunes U and began to download them.

When I connected my 80GB iPod Classic, iTunes crashed. I tried three times to get it to work, but had to reboot my G4 to get it to stabilize. I again connected my iPod and the sync went flawlessly like it has so many other times before. I have not opened up my iTunes on my Intel MacBook Pro, so 9.0.2 has not been installed there, so I cannot say that this is uniquely a problem on older Macs.

When my iPod finished syncing, I noticed that the it didn't have a category for iTunes U and that my iTunes U category was now missing from iTunes on the computer. I was able to get the category to reappear in iTunes simply by going to "Preferences..." within iTunes and selecting the box next to "iTunes U" in the General Preferences menu.

My iPod Classic was purchased in April of 2008, so it's only about a year and a half old. The firmware version on it is 1.1.2, which iTunes says is the latest version available for this iPod. I don't believe a firmware update was ever available for it since I purchased it. This brings me to think that there could be a firmware upgrade needed for these older devices. My iTunes U downloads appear in iTunes, but cannot be found on my iPod after a sync. I've tried searches by Genre and Author. Luckily, they were free downloads, so no money lost there.

Fortunately, I have not experienced the headaches others have had in this thread. My iPod still works. I simply can't find my iTunes U downloads on it, which is quite inconvenient for me at the moment.

When I installed iTunes 9, It automatically updated Software on iPOD(160) also, Since from that, iPOD never appeared in iTune. I did all possible based on information got from various discussions , nothing works out.
I check the same issue, I connected my Home PC which has old version of iTumes(8). my iPOD and got reconised and I could able to Sync also. When I connect my laptop back(iTune9), It asked to reset to Factory settings. when I did that, same problem reappeared. iTune never displayes iPOD in it. I think this is iTunes9 problem

I have now tried restoring my IPOD using ITunes 8 and theres still no good news.
The number of users facing this issue and the time Apple is taking to fix is worrying me a lot...
I now see that this thread is marked as 'Resolved'. Does some 1 from Apple read the discussion forums here? If thats the case, I am sure they ignored this post 1st...

I am now creating another post for the same issue hoping it grabs some 1s attention at Apple Support.
Meanwhile, has some 1 been lucky enough to get this issue fixed on their IPODS? Please post here...

    Hello everybody!
I am new to Apple and despite the frustration I am experiencing now,I still believe in the Apple brand.

My firsts Apple Product was a 160G iPod. Followed by an iTouch32G and one more iPod16G.
I was using them with Windows. Worked very well. Ironically

Liked my gadgets very much so two months ago I bought a beautiful MacBookPro 15.
I said, Lets harmonize my stuff!

I upgraded to iTunes 9.0.1 and installed the recent firmware for Mac on my 160GiPod.

Now, my 160G iPod won't sync any of my music, the videos will sync them, but very slowly.
My warranty expired few months ago.

The 32G iTouch, works fine with Windows, but very slow sync with Mac
The16G iPod ,have no intention to connect it with my new MacBookPro till a solution to this issue will appear

I would try to reinstall the Windows firmware and try using it with an older version of iTunes which I have on my Windows laptop. Did somebody try this?

I own one of the best machine from Apple, but I am obliged to use my old crappy Windows Laptop to access and control my iPods. Funny

Hung out to dry...again. This happened to me 3 years ago (yup, I still have a classic 20 GB) and out of desperation I used a hammer to 'fix' the drive. iTunes update ONCE AGAIN killed my iPod. Funny how this happens to the Classic models.

I have no choice but to contact the feds and see if there's something to this update that is disabling these units. No explanation from Apple, no understandable Error info, nothing. Apple should be ashamed of themselves. And please hold your statements about how I got 5 good years out of my iPod...no one told me when I bought it that it had a shelf life, specifically that the shelf life would be determined by the manufacturer and not the care and attention the unit was given by its owner. My iPod has been a great companion and I cared for it like a baby. Now it just sits there with a big frown, which incidentally infuriates me. It's like Apple is laughin at me...

Whatever problem I was encountering now seems to be fixed. If this turns out not to be the case then I'll report back, but my advice to people is to download the latest iTunes version (9.0.2.25) as things appear back to normal for me.

wish i could say the same.. my ipod has been down since mid september, that fateful day i decided to conform and update itunes 8 to itunes 9.. my ipod 80GB Classic wont connect.. however.. my 1st?? gen ipod nano 1GB does. not happy! i have had my 80GB only just around or over a year.. and it was a gift so i dont think i got th warranty or i have lost the paperwork..

i went thru trying all solutions.. including updating to 9.02.25?? and none worked.. its not only ruined my ipod.. but now my laptop bluescreens occasionally --> only when i am using itunes..

my advice.. get an mp3 and use windows media player!!

but i would like to know any NEW solutions to the problem if i can.. cos i miss my 80gb :'(

-what happens if i plug in my ipod 80gb classic..
    - it shows up loading screen "autoplay".. and then once thats finished - takes a minute or a few..
    - wait a while.. itunes opens.
    - Ipod (removable section).. does not appear on sidebar where library/playlists etc are
    - and the results vary.. twice it got into the "ipod needs to be restored to factory settings".. course this erased my music and left me to finding my old 1gb ipod (lucky i at least have that...)
    - mostly it says file F:/ cannot save data to this format. please find somewhere else. (but does not give option to show it ipod or anything.. via my computer.
    - sometimes all it says is on ipod screen "connected" eject b4 disconnecting.. and it charges, but yes it shows up in my computer.
    - sometimes it even says syncing ipod. but this never has results, eventually when it stops "syncing" i have to eject it via my computer or safely remove hardware, and both methods.. i look to find an empty ipod. [also known as a mini brick which solely can be used for a defence weapon in my handbag]

    i want my 80gb backk!!!
if this cannot be solved.. I vow to never get another ipod, because i already have had enough problems with my 1gb where i had to have it sent in for servicing.. lucky i had the warranty!

Ditto, ditto, ditto!!! Like many of you I am experiencing the same problems with my ipod classic, purchased about 18 months ago. I've gone through the suggested 5 step points on the Apple website and have also rebooted the ipod disk, but to no avail! I can only put this down to Itunes 9 upgrade as my windows explorer on my windows xp will recognise my ipod but itunes will not. I've also tried it on my laptop which is running Vista and it won't recognise it on there either.

My husband's 4 gb nano ipod which is older than mine is fine and my son's 3 month old nano is still working - just mine then!

It started off with trying to sync and it would only add about 350 of 3000 songs and said that sync was complete. It's now not even recognising the ipod.

Please, please, please let me know if anyone manages to find a solution to this problem.

Have you guys tried to reformat your ipod through windows yet? I was having the same problems and tried everything itunes suggested, i.e. the 5'rs and it was still corrupted. I finally uninstalled itunes and all of its apps and then reinstalled to itunes 8 again which is what I had when it worked fine. Then i hooked up my ipod and when my computer recognized it, I right clicked on myipod and it gave the option to format, so I did. This took 30 minutes or so but after that my ipod works great now. Back to the way it was. My suggestions is to try these steps.

i forgot to mention that when i run the diagnostics in Itunes 9.0.2.25 to see if it can find my ipod 80GB classic, it does say it [can] find it.. so why it won't show up in devices.. and the "sync ipod" option in menu bar is greyed out.. i don't know.. but basically itunes can pick up the ipod.. it just cannot sync it or show it in devices..

    I FIXED THE PROBLEM!

So I was having the same problem, itunes 9.0.2.25 wouldn't recognize my ipod, but windows did. I was previously on itunes 8 but I switched from vista, to windows 7 release candidate (no formatting necessary so I didn't have to do anything w/my itunes), but then I decided to get Windows 7 final version. I had to reinstall vista, then upgrade to Win7. As such, I had to format my drive, leaving me with no files. I didn't mind as all my itunes were backed up on my external hard drive, however, upon moving to the newest version of itunes, it bricked my ipod. It formatted my ipod, leaving it totally blank, but saying 0kb free. I tried the 5Rs, i tried everything I could find on the internet, and I tried things that I knew of simply b/c of my computer know-how. Nothing worked, until now:

First thing I did was delete all my itunes from my local hard drive. Not only my music, but ALL itunes files that I had on my computer in the "*My music*" folder. That included old itunes library files, all folders, etc. I closed out itunes. Then I right clicked on "*my computer*" and clicked "manage." I went to "*device manager*" and clicked on "*universal serial bus controllers.*" I plugged in my ipod and upon windows recognizing it, i clicked "uninstall." After it uninstalled I disconnected my ipod from my computer.

I uninstalled itunes and ran a disk cleanup. Then I installed itunes, version 7.7.0.43, which I got off an internet google search. The install went fine and I didn't put ANY music into the program. I proceeded to connect my ipod and it gave me the option to restore and update the drivers for my ipod! This wasn't the case before, as it wouldn't even show up on my itunes. I restored my ipod, which stopped it from giving me the language select menu every time I turned on my (empty) ipod.

After I restored my ipod to factory settings, I disconnected it and put all my music from my external hard drive (over 35GB) BACK on my laptop, in itunes. I connected my ipod after that was done and VOILA! My ipod is now synchronizing! It hadn't done that since I installed that HORRIBLE itunes 9! I'd tried itunes 7 and itunes 8 before, but I hadn't erased all my music and other itunes files.

This seems to have remedied the problem. I hope this helps others, as I actually made an account to give ppl my advice on this problem as it was driving me CRAZY! Let me know if this works for you, and GOOD LUCK!
