Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

I had also this problem with my brand new iPod Claasic (160 G). Only after trying several times (more than 10) I could restore it, which meant I had to complete resycnchronize with my pc. I suppose it is reformatted during that process. Maybe I had better returned it for replacement .......
ZDnet Belgium has an article on the problem (for those understanding some Dutch: http://www.zdnet.be/news/110523/itunes-9-maakt-ipod-classic-stuk/). They called Apple UK, but a spokesman over there couldn't give any explanation. He seems to have promised some decklaration after Thanksgiving Day in the US ....

I think we can put to rest the idea that this only affects "older" iPods. In fact it affected my off-the-shelf 120Gb replacement (dated 2008) for my 3-year old 80Gb, so it affects old and new alike.

Anyways, after removing all traces of iTunes and Apple products, and reformatting the iPod with Windows, I installed iTunes 8.2.1 and restored the iPod (unlike last time when I used iTunes 9 again). We'll see if it sticks this time.

In response to Lucasre and JoshCrow123 (both immediately above), I just want to politely say that personally I've tried to restore my iPod more than 10 times with no luck. Also, I have tried removing all traces of iTunes from my machine and in fact tried to restore my iPod using Windows alone on a machine with a *newly reformated drive that never contained ANY version of iTunes at all* and even then Windows couldn't read the iPod's hard drive. I don't want to sound negative, but we need to let Apple know that there has not been a consistent solution or workaround that has worked for everyone. If there is something that works for everyone, Apple should post it. Otherwise, Apple should issue an update to iTunes 9 that will fix this problem. Or...we should sue Apple and they should have to give us all new iPods for free. Sorry for fuming, but it's now been about 3 weeks that my iPod has been a brick.

In the meantime, mine failed again, too. And what did I do? NOTHING. I only connected it for five minutes to add one single file, I added it with no problems, ejected normally and it was full, yet it contained "no songs".

Perhaps this isn't a big issue for someone with a four-digit salary, but people make about 400-500 bucks a month here, an iPod costs a lot and I surely can't settle down by buying another one (that would experience the same problems). I really don't like this!

Had a similar problem to you folks, 2 month old 120 gig Ipod would not sync fully after installing Itunes 9, so after about the 5th restore I gave up and just requested service for it.

While waiting on ups to process the shipment, the manager told me mine was the 6th Ipod he has sent to apple THIS WEEK, and this is in an area thats mostly rural with a few subdivisions here and there.

I'd like to know: for those of you that were lucky enough to be able to return their crashed iPod Classic back to Apple for service under warranty, was Apple actually able to send you a fixed or brand-new iPod Classic that actually works with iTunes 9? Or has anyone visited an Apple store/Genius bar and had an Apple techie actually fix their crashed iPod Classic so it plays nice with iTunes 9? That is, is it theoretically possible for an iPod Classic to somehow be "fixed" so it works with iTunes 9? Does anyone out there have an iPod Classic that is working consistently well with iTunes 9? If so, what's your secret?

I haven't received mine back yet so I can't really say.

My mothers BF has the same exact model (his was purchased not a month later than mine) and so far his is seeming to sync fine, and to my knowledge he never synced his under any other version of Itunes other than 9.

I'm wondering if it was the fact that many of us had synced on Itunes 8, and then synced with 9 that might have caused the issue, maybe some change in the software caused an incompatibility issue?

I suspect foul play at the moment. After continued posts on this site and in Electricpig.co.uk (a magazine) my iPod now refuses to sync. This only came about after I posted a critical article in Electricpig. If this is the result, then that is underhand and downright wrong behaviour on Apple's part. I am very disappointed with the service I have received, and will take further action if it is not resolved soon.

I have 4 apple classics and 2 of the 4 are not being recognized by iTunes 9 and are showing a file picture with an exclamation point. They are also clicking when I turn them on. Sounding like a bad drive. I am confused because the other 2 work just fine. After reading this thread, I am not going to attach the working 2 until I see some response from Apple about why iTunes 9 is corrupting the classic hard drives. I may have just lucked out on the 2 that work. I was about to toss out the 2 with the problem. I guess I will wait to see what happens. In the mean time Apple is losing money as we won't be buying any music until the problem is fixed.
Good Luck everyone. By the way, I bought my son a Zune for Christmas. What does Apple think of that!

Having the same problem with my new replacement iPod, it's really hacky and it goes from working 50/50 of the time to needing restores. I think this is a horrible and incredible inconvenience. I expect an iTunes update or patch asap from Apple!

Has Apple officially said anything about this problem yet? I note there still isn't a warning before downloading I-tunes V9 despite the problems it is obviously causing so many customers.

I'm quite worried that Apple is going to sweep us under the rug and hope our problem goes away. At least the problem has now been noted at the Wikipedia page for iPod Classics. The more publicity the better. The one thing I haven't tried is going into an Apple store/Genius bar and seeing if they can restore my iPod. Has anyone tried this?

Ive been to the apple store to the genius bar, the guy there managed to get my ipod to restore, after i tried so many times on my itunes, but as soon as i got it home and tried to load music onto it, it just went back to needing to be restored, and itunes 9 just fails every time. Ive made another appointment for wednesday, so I will keep people updated if anything changes.

Here's the link to the wiki article concerning this problem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipodclassic#Hardwareissues Feel free to add your experiences or even better would be if someone compiles everyone issues into a well written report. Also don't forget to mention Apple's unwillingness to address this issue.

I've got the same problem as well. I calld the Apple Technical Support but they don't want to say anything about it or help me because my warranty is finished. If any 1 knows how to fix this, please post it.
