Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

OK, I was just cruising the internet looking for other possible fixes to this nightmare. First, I found that 3G ipods are alos having the same problem with iTunes 9. See: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10555606

But there was an intriguing idea from one user. She used a new USB cable from her iPhone to connect her iPod to iTunes 9. And...it worked!

Do any of you have an iPhone? (I don't.) What if you tried connecting your iPod to iTunes 9 using the iPhone's USB cable? Does that work?

In other words, is the problem with the USB cable? This might make some sense, because one theory about the iPod/iTunes 9 conflict is that Apple was tweaking the USB settings in order to prevent Palm Pre users from using iTunes.

I just plugged in my brick using an i-phone cable and i-tunes recognised it immediately. So, I reformatted as suggested by i-tunes and thend updated the i-pod software.

After doing this, the i-pod no longer showed up in i-tunes and upon disconnecting it came up with a delayed write failure message. Googling this message led me to find this post:

"Actually the issue is a corrupt hard drive. Even if you format it with windows it leaves the bad partition.Stop all ipod and apple services. Put the IPOD in disk mode and use a low level format utility to format the IPOD. Then use windows to format it again, start up the services and it will find the ipod and ask you to restore it. I fought this for the last 3 days and saw that people were getting this from HD’s too and that a re-partion of low level format of the drive fixed it. Figured I would try that since it was toast."

I'm currently running a low level fomatting tool to repair the corrupted hard drive. I'll let everyone know how I go.

Edwardsd: great. Please keep us posted. Also, once you finish your test, can you be specific? For instance, I don't know what a "low level formatting tool" is. Also, where can you buy an iPhone cable? I just Googled it and you can get an original from Apple for $30 or a knockoff for a couple of bucks (but the knockoff only works for data, not charging).

I second this as well, interested in knowing more.

iPhone cables are, just like iPhones, not sold legally here, so I assume I'll need to pay twice as much if it comes to that. :s

Don't do the knock off cable, they often produce issues and if anyone is using non-standard iPod/Apple cables I would urge that you do this with thier cables.

As their may be some new usage with the updated client that needs the standard pinout by apple on thier connector.

If this does work, try to use standard cables such as this:

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA591G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0OQ&mco=MTU4MzcxNDM

Which is only $20 and not $30 as noted above.

ok. so this morning i thought i'd give it a go one more time. I downloaded itunes 9. Went to admin tools and had to enable the apple usb ( i had previosly disabled that port)once i enabled it, admin tools stopped responding so i altcntldel and had to end admin tools task. then my screen went blank..showing nothing but my wallpaper. Again i did an ctrlaltdelete and itunes went from not responding to running to not responding to running again. Then it saw my ipod, and synced it up. the only othe thing i did was use a usb port on other side of laptop, where there isnt a dvd drive or any other port on that side being used? hope it keeps working:)
havent tried it on the desktop yet to see if it reads there yet. willl let ya know

Try creating a new library. To do this, use the article below:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589

Just create a new library to test with so you know you are working from something totally clean. If it works, then you know the problem has something to do with your old library.

So you have one iPod that is working fine and one that is not? Both of the same kind?

I understand what you are saying. The fact that some solutions work for some and not for others really just indicates that not everyone is having the same issue. There may not be a 'Silver Bullet' for everyone posting here.

My thought was to just try and layout the best place to start from when it comes to trying to troubleshoot. All I can really hope for is that the suggestions help some folks get back to a place where their classic is working for them.

So as it stands right now:

iPod B: Was not working but is now working with iTunes 9 on Windows XP on your laptop

iPod A: Has always worked, but you are only using it on your desktop computer running XP and iTunes 8

    Is that right?

    No, I understand your concern.

Since you are concerned, maybe just take all the backup precautions... create a restore point... etc.

Then do it and see how it goes. If things go badly, you can restore back to what was working for you.

yeah........still not convinced..lol after i tried on my other laptop
(call that one MINE lol) I have tried to sys restore all the way back to pervious dates even tried one as far back as oct 3. It wont restore my cpu. But this problem started after i did downloads & deletes of itunes9. Overall i guess i wish all my cpus were Macs seeing as most of the trouble is with people that have Un-Macs....lol
