Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

    Hi all,

If I'm trying to upload the latest firmware onto the ipod, I always get the error message with the code "1439".
Is this the reason that you are using an i-phone cable?? Or is there another reason why you need that type of cable?

I really hope I can make this thing back to work...

edwardsd, everything worked for me. I did have the error messages at first, but then I noticed that too many programs were running at once and all the program was doing was outpu errors. Then I closed everything else and the process went smoothly.

I filled the iPod and now I wonder if I should erase all traces of iTunes on my computer to prevent anything strange from happening. The thing is: I want to scrobble music to last.fm, BUT I wouldn't like whatever client I use to tell me that I need to reformat the iPod in order to do it.

    Kristof,

Have you tried deleting your downloaded firmware files which reside on your local client? I mention and give a link to this in my prior post (on page 21 last entry for that page).

I've finally manage to get my Mac to detect my iPod Classic 120G (a PC format iPod which previously can only be detected by PC).
    1. First of all, I restored my iPod via PC itunes.
    2. Then, after restore, without registering the iPod, I connect it to my MBP, and magically, my Mac itunes detected my iPod.
I hope this can be of some help to someone.

I'd just like to add myself to this long list of people which Apple has screwed up their iPods. I have a 30gb iPod video which is about as useful as a piece of wood to me at the moment. No matter what i do, nothing comes up on the screen and its been completely blank for the last few months. Until i found this discussion i thought it might just be me, but no, theres hundreds of other people which apple has screwed over. They don't seem to be helping either, do they? Nope, so as far as I'm concerned i hate apple. i was considering buying a mac computer in the near future to replace my rather ageing laptop, but thats not gonna happen.
When I first downloaded iTunes 9, i got really excited cus it was the first time i had updated since i got iTunes 7. So i was pretty stoked actually, until i plug my iPod in, going all fine, synced all my music, went to unplug it and it completely died. Nothing has shown on the screen since. I've formatted it, pt it in disk mode, restored it, updated to the latest iPod software, resynced, reset, and plugged it into two other computers, with iTunes 7. Nothing has worked, and since its way over its warranty, im screwed myself. My iPod has worked fine for four years and nothing has happened till now.
    Life with no music *****.

Biddy, your issue is different...you have an ipod of 5th generation and your HD died. I had the same happen here the day I joined this forum and that's what I was told and that's when I got my first classic (which dies differently - you get a red cross of death on your screen).

This is horrible. My brand new off the shelf replacement keeps failing aswell. I sync it up and it works fine untill I add a song to iTunes, then it keeps needing a restore before working again. Such a horrendous waste of time. And yes, I have all the latest software versions.

Glad to hear some of you are having some success. I don't know what 'scroggle' is so I can't really help you there.

Funny thing is that my own laptop still doesn't recognize my i-pod, but my mum's brand new one with I-tunes does. Perhaps trying the i-phone cable with someone elses computer may help. If your i-pod is recognised in their computer, try the steps that worked for me on page 21.

I'll try fixing my library on my own computer to see if that helps me. If not, I'll copy the important stuff and wipe the computer & start over.

A friend gave me his iPod Classic 80g to check out because it wasnt working. After MANY (and I mean MANY) hours of screwing with it, iTunes 9 is a problem! (9.0.2.25 on both MacBook and Windows 7 PC).. ALL attempts to restore would fail with several different 1439, 1430 etc errors on both MAC and PC. I had to recover several times using Mac Disk Utility and do a repartition - scheme master boot, MS-DOS (FAT32) format. After a nice disk format and attempt to use iTunes 9, it would get screwed up over and over. Syncs were so slow it was unbearable. It kept being corrupted and asking for a restore which again and again would fail with errors. There were many times the iPod restart would cycle endlessly and only solution was to put it in disk mode and reformat the drive. Never once did the Mac Disk Utility, erase, verify or rebuild actions indicate any sort of disk errors.

After 20-30 times back and forth with the PC and Mac iTunes versions, I read this forum and issues with ver 9. I installed iTunes 8.2.16 on an old laptop and was for the first time in 2 days able to do a restore. The sync also seemed normal speed. I am watching for a problem that effected touch controls seemingly active and doing some odd things during playback.

I AM ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH iTunes Ver 9 and the iPod Classic 80g.

For those of you who are just joining us, here is one summary of the situation:

iPod Classics from 2007 and 2008 seem to have a problem with iTunes 9. The iPods tend to crash in strange ways, such as the iPod says there are no tunes on it after syncing. When you try to restore the iPod, it doesn't work, and eventually the iPod may or may not be recognized by your computer.

A few people on this list have had success in restoring their iPod Classics. Some people find that using a brand-new iPhone cable works instead of the iPod Classic cable. Others have found that reformating their iPod using a low-level formating tool (one that completely erases the iPod's hard drive) works. After doing that, some have gone back to iTunes 8 and some have stuck with iTunes 9.

For me, unfortunately, nothing seems to work. I tried the low-level format software and got some format errors, indicating that there may be a problem with the hard drive on my iPod. The only thing I'd like to say is that my iPod was working just fine until I installed iTunes 9 a month ago. Why would my hard drive choose to fail at the PRECISE moment that I installed iTunes 9? And why should an iPod's hard drive fail after only two years anyway?

I am completely frustrated. I haven't had a working iPod for a month now. I am still hoping that Apple will issue a statement, or a version of iTunes that works. I am also hoping that some lawyer will initiate a class action lawsuit that will finally get Apple to publically acknowledge this problem.

I am doing A LOT of troubleshooting on this. Unless you have a bad cable, I dont see the cable being an issue, just diversion factor. From all my testing so far, I am seeing a problem with Restore with iTunes 9. I have been monitoring the iPod disk corruption via my Macbook using Disk Utility to Verify the drive. After I did a restore (that took 1 minute) on an old Dell laptop running XP with iTunes 8, all worked and the Mac verified the disk as good.

Every time I restore with iTunes 9 on the Mac, a Disk Utility VERFIY reports a corrupt volume and aborts. The Mac itunes restore uses Mac OS Extended (Journaled) HFS Plus volume with Apple Partition Map scheme.

I will next move over to my Windows 7 box with iTunes 9 and see how Restore effects the drive.

If possible, try to install version 8.2.1 iTunes and do a restore with that. I am not sure you can clean up the ipod drive with windows format. It wasnts FAT32 bootable.

Fliperoff -- thanks. The problem (for me) is that once I noticed that iTunes 9 was corrupting my iPod, I immediately uninstalled iTunes 9 and all its remnants (using Apple's recommended procedure where you uninstall EVERYTHING including Bonjour, etc.). I then reinstalled iTunes 8 and tried to restore. That's when my troubles really began. My iPod won't restore under iTunes 8, so I assume that iTunes 9 corrupted my iPod's firmware somehow. But you are having good luck with iTunes 8, which is awesome for you. I even went to an older laptop that has a brand-new, wiped-clean hard drive with a brand-new Windows XP Pro on it. This computer NEVER had iTunes 9 on it, ever. Even on this laptop, my iPod wouldn't restore. I know that Apple might say, "Well, your iPod's hard drive just broke, it's your fault," but my iPod was working perfectly until I tried iTunes 9. It just seems that on my iPod, something permanently bad happened when I used iTunes 9. For some reason, the same thing didn't happen to you. The weird thing is that so many users on this post are having different kinds of problems: there doesn't seem to be one single problem or one single solution.
