Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

Mike, I live just outside Phila in Chadds Ford. I would be interested in seeing if I can recover your ipod if you are close.

@fliperoff, thanks, but I think I'm either going to take it into an Apple store/Genius bar where apparently they will do restores for free, or pay for a private iPod repair service or give up and buy a non-Apple device, once I raise the funds. However: could you tell me what disk format utility worked for you in Windows? I'm still using Windows XP Pro. As I told you, when I right-click on my Ipod, it won't format. Thanks.

Mike, so WinXP sees the ipod as a drive? which letter? Try and drag a folder of some files over and copy to the ipod drive and see if it copies without errors.

Did you try loading itunes after winXP sees the drive? In other words, connect ipod first then launch itunes.

I had a logitech keyboard/mouse driver get corrupt and screw up other items on the USB bus. I think going through and making sure all your USB related device drivers are in good shape is actually a good idea.

Those with problems syncing their classic with itunes 9 should try something. Put the ipod in disk mode. Close itunes after it connects and starts. Drag a large size folder through mac finder or windows explorer to copy it to the ipod "drive". I used my MP3 folder with many files in it.

This is a good test taking itunes out of the picture, tho the usb driver for the ipod from itunes 9 is still in use.

I saw problems consistent with copying via the OS as I did with itunes 9 trying to sync.

I am starting to think the error 1439 etc on restore and the sync problems are related to bad sectors on the ipod disk that somehow are now an issue.

Been a loyal iPod user for about 7 years now.

This has really tipped me over the edge now, I'm looking for something that doesn't require some RUBBISH middle man software to transfer files from a to b.

I hope they sort this out, otherwise I'm off.

Apple, get off your duff and reply to your customers. If you do not take care of them, you will not have any. This is a travesty. This should be your top priority right now. Listen.

Ok I am literally the happiest woman in the entire world right now.

Ipod classic 120gb. First noticed trouble a couple weeks ago when I reset my ipod and it erased half my music. Didn’t really think much of it at the time and took it as an opportunity to configure my itunes library to autosync instead of manually manage.

This morning I reset again after I couldn’t open playlists or song menus when I tapped them. Got a msg saying I needed to restore in iTunes. Once I plugged it in, the continuous self-reset nightmare began.

Here were my relevant troubleshooting steps:

    1. uninstalled iTunes v9.0.25 completely. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923

    2. put in disk mode. Do a search on this forum if you’re unclear on that. Basically, press the select button+Menu, then immediately press Slect+play button once the apple icon comes up.
*-After I uninstalled itunes 9, I tried installing itunes 8. Got some stupid error and uninstalled it. So, that didn’t work for me.

    3. reformatted the ipod from “My Computer”:
    a. Right click
    b.Format…

    4. the options presented to me were formatting to NFTS or exFAT. I did some research and concluded that exFAT was a reasonable choice, given that the default NFTS was screwing up as it was. (http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2801/exfatversus_fat32_versusntfs/)

So, I checked the option for “quick format” and exFAT. I forget what disk size I chose or whatever.

    5. the quick format was no joke…it was done really fast. So, I decidded to reformat AGAIN to exFAT without quick formating. This took a long time, and I tried it a couple different times. I got an error message or two, and I also straight up cancelled or disconnected it if it seemed to be stalling. Finally, one of the formats seemed to show progress on the little progress bar. I was thrilled!

    6. I reinstalled itunes 9 (groan). rebooted computer also.

    7. first started itunes, then hooked up ipod once all the welcome crap was done. Also, an important detail in itunes: Edit>>preferences>>Devices>>UNCHECK the "prevent ipods from syncing automatically.” So, to clarify that double negative, you WANT auto-syncing at this stage.

    8. Restored ipod, resynced…

    MY IPOD WORKS AGAIN YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tip: use a USB cable that isn’t shredded or anything.

I think I am having similar problems to what is being described here.

I was able to use iTunes 9.0.2.25 until the other night. When I connected my 120GB Classic it appeared to sync successfully, but when it ejected itself my laptop just melted. The screen image fragmented and descended into an illogical grey mess, with the computer requiring a full restart after no response to Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

I'm not sure if I am experiencing the same issue as most people here, but I am certain that this is happening to others. My brother first informed me of this type of error when it happened to his 80GB Classic. When it happened to me I realised that it could be something more, hence my turning to this forum.

It's time Apple accepted that there is something in iTunes 9 that is seriously damaging all Classics and do something about it urgently.

Indeed, my laptop crashed when plugging in the iPod Classic 120gb once iTunes 9 was installed. I got it all back to work after reformatting the iPod harddrive (see post some pages back) - just plain and simple 'format' in Windows, aal the defaulyt options. It took quite some time, a couple of hours.
So far iTunes is the one and only program that has crashed on this brand new laptop (Vista, and the Win7).
Apprently Apple is finally 'investigating' the situation.

Im having the same problem with the 60GB 6th gen ipod after downloading the 9th version of itunes. However, my ipod came up with the corrupt sign and to re-sync with the library. Thus, i decided to be cocky and go through the 5R's steps. Having done this i now seem to be stuck in an endless loop!! the only thing i can do is run diagnostic tests via the ipod. No luck here either, so i'm going to try one more thing before i travel 50 miles to the nearest store and bite there heads off. I swapped to ipod last year from a sony walkman 6gb. I tell you what i never had this hassle with my Sony all programs worked with no problems whatsoever. So i hope this resolves before i bid apple a well deserved and horrid goodbye.

This is the first I've bothered posting, because I didn't want to be just another rant with no solution. So, at least in my case, there IS a happy ending.

I purchased a new 160GB iPod and have spent the last 3 weeks trying to get it to sync. Having purchased a new iPod, I was forced to download iTunes 9. The download seemed fine, but when I plugged in my iPod I got the typical message "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted... You must restore". I restored about 10 times with no success before setting up a call with Apple Support. In the meantime, I uninstalled + reinstalled iTunes again and tried restoring about 5 more times with no luck. My first Apple Support person had me uninstall + reinstall AGAIN, and try a couple other things, none of which worked. They suggested I go to the Apple store to see what they could do. At the store, they were able to connect and load songs with no problem and suggested that once I plugged back in at home it might work. At home, same syncing loop. Apple Support call #2 - tried a couple new things with no luck. Apple Store #2 - ran diagnostics and the iPod appeared fine. They suggested I uninstall + reinstall the iPod in the Device Manager. Back at home, I did this with no change. After reading almost every post on this board and doing some extra searching, I found more suggestions on things to try. Suggestions that none of the Apple Support staff had ever made. Here are the links to those I found most helpful -
    http://www.taranfx.com/blog/how-to-fix-corrupted-ipod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1493
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
    http://www.wikihow.com/Fix-Error-1418-%28or-1415,-1417,-1428%29-on-iPod-Classic

I tried ALL of these suggestions, but the ones that ultimately seemed to do it were uninstalling + reinstalling the USB Mass Storage Device in the Device Manager, changing my iPod drive letter to one way down the alphabet and reformatting my iPod through Windows (this step took over an hour). After all these steps, you must then restart your computer for the changes to take affect. The next time I plugged in my iPod - Bingo! I will definitely be resyncing my iPod A LOT in the next 60 days before my warranty is up. Hope this helps someone out there. Good luck!

So after waiting and waiting i attempted to cross contaminate my ipods/itunes. Bad idea. The ipodA that has been fine (never saw itunes9),I decided to try it on the IT9 , started to act funny, as in not wanting to disconnect. Caused a "blue screen" error my laptop. I turned off the ipod so i narrowly escaped this good ipod having the same fate. As the one i have been able to sync just one time ipodB. I havent hooked B up to the laptop but that one time. Now Im not so sure i should. Guess i will be calling Apple in the mornin.

I have an 80g iPod that was purchased just over a year ago. About 3 weeks ago when we upgraded to the latest iTunes now the iPod doesn't show up in iTunes or in My Computer. When you connect it to the pc it says "usb device not recognized". I've done the 5 R's, I've uninstalled, reinstalled iTunes, I've restored the iPod and lost all the songs. I've even messed with the registry and device manager uninstalling and reinstalling dll's and usb devices. If I load the pc in safe mode the iPod shows up in device manager as Apple iPod, but if I start the pc normally it connects for a moment then ejects itself. I can take the iPod to other pc's in the house and iTunes recognizes it immediately and asks me if I want to erase and sync. I click no and can charge the iPod with no problem.

I'm assuming the iPod works just fine, it charges and I did get it to sync on that particular pc once. The first several tries it would stop and say "required disc not found", but we managed to get past that and resync songs to it. It only worked once and now we can't get it to be recognized by the pc any longer.

All of the usb ports work, we're not using a hub. I've uninstalled the devices, updated drivers on the iPod, using the latest iTunes (previous editions didn't seem to help when we installed them) Other iPod (30g) doesn't show up on that particular pc either.

My last resort is to do a windows repair or reinstall which I am hoping to avoid. If anyone has suggestions I would appreciate them. I've tried picking the brains of my techie friends, but so far no luck.

    Thanks!

    Kelly

I have to add my name to this long list of ipod users with no useable ipod and also with no solution to offer. Since itunes 9 destroyed my ipod I seem to be unable to use this even as a hard disk, despite disk utility saying there is nothing wrong with the drive.

Does anyone have a good legal basis for demanding a replacement iPod from Apple despite their iPod being out of warranty? I am a lawyer and fully intend to get some compensation for this (if only to make up for the number of hours I have spent trying to resurrect my iPod).

Though really, will anyone actually trust Apple that this isn't going to happen again? Perhaps an alternative is a better and more reliable idea...
