Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

What I don't understand is why Apple hasn't done anything yet. I already know that mine probably can't be fixed. I have a 80GB Classic but it's refurbished, so I know Apple probably won't replace mine or anything if that's what they decide on.

But should I just cave and buy a Touch or something? I need an iPod in my life, but I don't want to buy one if it's going to go screwy again. Are Touches okay with iTunes 9?

And it's definitely an iTunes 9 problem. My little sister got a little iCarly mp4 player for Christmas and it put all the songs on perfectly fine even amidst my iPod problems.

Just thought I would join the list so apple knows how many people this has effected. My ipod worked perfect until I updated, now I can't get it to do anything. I don't want to buy a new one if this is what I can expect to happen again in a few years. Wish they would help us out in some way or I will take my business else where.

I have now seen three Classics end their lives with a "corrupt" file system / hard-drive, in the last four years. The latest one (today) played fine on Saturday, but today decided it will no longer turn on. This is exactly how the other iPods started the long, drawn out process of dying. I had not even connected it to my PC within the last 3 months - I had no need. It's only four months old and I had not bought any new music, as I was waiting for Christmas. Now I have a load of new albums to put on iTunes, but no iPod. It's just typical Apple build quality - or lack of it. This one is within the warranty, but if ever I lose an iPod outside the warranty, I won't be getting another. They are just crap!

Actually, this also affects people who's iPod is still working.

Like mine: i just upgraded to iTunes 9 and soon after (before syncing) i found out about the problems, so now there is no way i'm risking to sync anymore.
I'm sure i'm not the only one. I'm lucky that i at least have a working iPod, but i can't put anything else on it anymore without playing russian roulette.

Since then i'm following this thread daily (and sympatizing with the people here who are worse off than me)

    Hi 4minutegirl
My cousin received a touch for Christmas and it did work for a short time with iTunes 9, however my advice to you would be, if you purchase a Touch, visit Technobuzz.net and download iTunes 8, as this will enable you to have a working iPod. If you are in the UK you will probably not be able to purchase anything from the iTunes store as the software in licensed under American laws.

    Good luck

    Hollie,

Your post seems to hold no substance on this discussion... First you are in the classic forums, and on a thread which is about how iTunes 9 may be causing issues with some classics...

A touch on the other hand is a completely different individual... I have a touch which has had no issues with iTunes 9. Therefore I don't understand again how it relates to the topic at hand, as no others have posted issues about that device family with iTunes 9.

The issues I have been having had been driving me insane, up until I now find that there are many folks in the same boat! I have an iPod classic 120gb which was purchased as a gift to me in August this year! I had transferred my album collection to iTunes 8 manually transferring the 87Gigs worth of songs to my iPod as I went along. (This took some time.) I then purchased an expensive iDock to play it on and all appeared to be fine. I then decide to remove the itunes library from my HDD as it was taking up to much space on my 300gig drive(Big mistake) Anyways I decided to import a couple of other CDs and got introduced to upgrade to iTunes 9 This I did and was pleased to see layout. However that was the start of the nightmare. I kept having to reset my iPod on each connection until such times that I kept getting asked to restore! Yikes! After a couple of weeks pondering this idea, I finally bit the bullet and restored, therefore loosing all data and having to repopulate my library again. I had purchased an external HDD for the purpose. So I started again an all seemed fine for the first 10gb. Then I connected and iTunes would not recognise my iPod. Tried to restore (Knowing I now had backup) But now I get the message from windows saying that some files are probably corrupted. And this on an iPod that would appear to only have the operating system installed.
Connecting my iPod now appears to open up part of iTunes and then freezes my computer! with nothing happening.
I have tried resetting(Nothing happens there. I cannot get into disk on My Computer. Or it takes forever. only for windows to say that it cannot access files)
This is a ridiculous situation to be in. I thought that the iPod was a marvel for the first couple of weeks of ownership. However over the last few months it is nothing but a misery. With a lot of time being wasted on trying to fix something that does not allow access!

OK! I am back! After reading through much of this thread??? I caught a couple of things I hadn't tried. One was the Formatting of the iPod itself. Soo.. I connected up my iPod again!! And got the usual corrupt/Windows scan message. I ignored them and went to "My Computer" It did show an iPod but not my Ident iPod. I right clicked and waited and waited nothing. I then went down to the Task bar and clicked on "My Computer" again. It was like there were various refresh screens. I did it again and eventually the window with options opened at the iPod(K)symbol.MM....So I clicked Format. Box opened up with choice I chose and formatted both file types offered NTFC/and xFAT(One after the other) and chose quick format. Accepting warnings in between. Formatting took seconds. I then just disconnected USB as there was apparently nothing now on iPod(Gulp!).

Now I opened up iTunes and it opened normally I connected iPod and itunes recognised there was an iPod connected(With page up at least) It then asked me to restore. which I did. Then iTunes synced and installed the iTunes 9 files (I suppose) and up pops my iPod on the left and it started syncing with the 20gb of music that I had in library. Whilst it was syncing I unticked the box that says Open up iTunes when connecting iPod. I do think that this is significant. As when I was connecting iPod in the past, it would appear to open iTunes only at where it had been when iPod had previously been synced. Anyways . Upshot is I now have my library(So far) all on my iPod and playing again. Phew! Does this sound feasable?

Ok, I have 2 80gb classics. I have the current version of iTunes on my PC and on my laptop. All my music and files are on the PC which is the main computer the pods sync with. Now, my music pod plays, and works fine. HOWEVER... if I connect it to the PC to sync when I've added new songs, it locks up iTunes and the pod. I have to shut down to disconnect it. But the other pod that I keep other items on will connect and be recognized just fine on the PC and iTunes.
Now the other strange thing is I can connect the first pod (music) to the laptop and everything works just fine (laptop has win7 on it, used to have vista) and I have restored the **** pod twice now, then gone and hooked it up to the pc to sync it again and it all works fine! I have never gotten a corruption message, but I am sick of dealing with this. Both pods work fine, play fine, will play through the stereo, or the usb pod docking turntable, play in the car etc, and hooked up to the laptop. But only one pod will be recognized in the pc, when both were BEFORE I upgraded iTunes! This is an apple problem and they need to get it fixed soon. I am rather disgusted.

And again. It would appear to me that if you have the. Open iTunes when iPod connected ticked. Then it only opens at last session. iTunes does not recognise your iPod because it doesn't have the same info as the library. UNTICK THE BOX!!! I have only ticked in the sync with ticked files. So let you know how I get on. There also appears to be an anomally with the "My Computer" and clicking on the iPod(K). Depending on the number of times you have synced your ipod to iTunes determines where the window opens??? You have to keep clicking on the My computer in Taskbar to arrive at a recognised field??

Will report back tommorow after adding to Library and Hopefully Syncing iPod.

    Cheers.(I'm all happy again.)

Finally I realize I'm not the only one. Do you guys think this could mean there's a solution coming? http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/12/11/applesaid_to_be_looking_into_reported_itunes_9_ipod_syncissues.html

Hey comrades! I have to say I feel for your pain and when I plugged my girlfriends 80GB iPod classic into iTunes 9 and it didn't show up I thought she would have my head. I frantically searched forums and all I came across was hopelessness and despair. My heart dropped into my stomach and I was sure this was the end.
But I refused to give up. I had her iPod plugged into iTunes and it was able to be detected on the computer JUST NOT ON ITUNES. So I kept the USB cable connected and held down the menu and centre buttons for a long time until the screen flicked off and then this weird looking DOS like font popped up and said do not disconnect, iTunes heard my distress call and told me to click to restore. After an argument leaving my relationship with my girlfriend hanging by a thread I decided to click restore. AND IT WORKED! I don't know if this helps at all but all I can say is it's worth a try. Good luck gentlemen. And God Speed.
