Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

    go back to Itunes 8. Uninstall 9.
    Put ipod into disk mode and it will sync to Itunes 8.
    disconnect after syncing. hold menu button and center button until apple appears on screen. then hit menu button. regular menu will come up soon.
    It is the only way my Classic 160 will sync.

    It's not corrupt. Uninstall 9. Reinstall 8. Put into disk mode by holding center button down and pause at same time. a little check mark will appear on a white screen telling you are in disk mode. connect to computer and sync.
    disconnect properly when finished. hold in menu button and center button at the same time until apple appears on screen. press menu button again and soon your regular menu will appear.
    This is the only way my Classic 160 will sync.

    So wait, if I uninstall 9 and reinstall 8, will that really work? I don't want to mess it up anymore. And where can I find iTunes 8 for download anyways?

    here you go: http://www.filehippo.com/downloaditunes32/5894/

    Although you can't import a library that has been in iTunes 9 (8 can't read that so you'll need to start from scratch)

    I tried uninstalling iTunes 9, installed iTunes 8, and when I put my iPod into disk mode and connect it to my computer, it still says the iPod is corrupted and needs to be restored. When I try to restore it, I'm still getting 1439.

    It also always says it needs to be charged, no matter how long I leave it plugged into the computer. Also, when it's unplugged, it runs fine but it says it's completely full and nothing is on it. It says all the memory is taken up by 'Other'.

    Ive got the same one. I used a different computer, that actually had itunes 9 on it too and restored it ok, but still cant sync properly. I put my songs on manually in itunes about 50 songs at a time.took ages but theyre all on there now but album artwork makes no sense.

    Just to add to all the frustration here, I had a 160 GB Classic that I could put all my music on it just fine but a day or 2 later it would tell me I needed to connect to iTunes and then Restore it. All the space was also taken up by Other.
    Got frustrated, returned it and got all my money back. Decided to buy a 64GB touch $$$$$. Had it for 3 days and the headphone jack no longer works on it.
    I really really really wish I would have just bought a new battery for my 5.5 Gen 30 Gig. That thing worked perfectly for over 3 years!!!!

    Apple doesn't care at all. Why would they?? They are trying to force us to spend more money on another Ipod. Complete BS.

    I'm having the same problem as stated by Nmott93!

    Still no one who has fixed this problem???
    I also already tried to perform a low level format through a non-windows soft tool, but still without succes.

    I still hope that I can have my ipod classic 80G fixed...

    I did find some Ipod repair services on the internet who claim they can fix this kind of issues. Any one experience with that??

    Excellent news (for me)... I have managed to fix my iPod so thought I'd share with you the steps I took...

    Note: I have a iPod classic 5.5G 30gb and the issue I was having was that my iPod would appear in "My Computer" but would NOT appear in iTunes and therefore it was impossible to sync.

    NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE>>>>>

    THIS WILL ONLY WORK WITH 5G & 5.5G IPODS AND BELOW SO CHECK WHAT GENERATION IPOD CLASSIC YOU HAVE ON THE INTERNET

    <<<<<NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE

    Please note you perform the below steps at your own risk and I accept no responsibility for anything that might go wrong.

    STEP 1 - Downgrade to iTunes 8
    ==============================
    1) Uninstall iTunes 9.
    2) Download iTunes 8.2.1 (Google "old itunes download")
    3) Install iTunes 8.2.1
    4) You will likely get a "ITunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes" error message, goto step 2.

    STEP 2 - Restore to a Previous iTunes Library (or not)
    =====================================================
    NOTE: If you're happy just to create a new iTunes library you can hold down "shift" and when you click your iTunes shortcut and it should prompt to create a new library, in which case you can skip to step 3.

    NOTE: * below typically refers to "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents"

    1) Backup you existing iTunes settings by copying "*\My Music\iTunes" to your Desktop or another location of your choosing.
    2) In "*\My Music\iTunes" rename "iTunes Library.itl" to "iTunes Libarary.itl.old"
    3) Find the most recent library 'backup' in "*\My Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries" and copy it to "*\My Music\iTunes" and rename "iTunes Library.itl".
    4) Launch iTunes and you should no longer get the error message.

    STEP 3 - Give Your iPod a Try
    =============================
    1) Reconnect you iPod and launch iTunes, you may find that at this stage that iTunes 8 detects and everything is working again. If not go to step 4.

    STEP 4 - Format Your iPod
    =========================
    NOTE: Only continue with this step if you are desperate to get your iPod sync'ing again. This step will wipe your iPod entirely so you will lose any music you have on the iPod at present.

    1) With your iPod connected goto "My Computer"
    2) Locate the drive that is your iPod (make sure its definitely your iPod and not something else)
    3) Right click on the drive and select "Format" from the menu.
    4) Check the "Quick Format" check box and click start (this will now wipe the files from your iPod)

    STEP 5 - Replace Base Firmware
    ==============================
    NOTE: This was the key step for me as it replaces the base iPod firmware that iTunes 9 has corrupted. Note there is alternative software that you can run on your iPod hardware and this is what you must install, I can't actually name the software else this post will be removed so have provided a cryptic clue.

    1) Download the software (Google "open source jukebox") (name is similar to a stone in a cube) You are after the "automatic installer".
    2) Launch the installer and follow all the necessary prompts and stick with just the standard options.
    3) You should now have replaced the corrupt firmware with an alternative boot loader.

    STEP 6 - Restore iPod with Apple Firmware
    =========================================
    1) Reconnect your iPod and launch iTunes 8.
    2) Say a prayer and curse apple.
    3) Hopefully your iPod will reappear (it did for me)
    4) You will be prompted that your iPod needs to be "Restored".
    5) Follow all the necessary prompts and your iPod will be back to normal.

    STEP 7 - DON'T INSTALL OR UPGRADE TO ITUNES 9
    =============================================
    Its evil don't do it.

    Please feedback to this forum and let us know if it worked for you OR NOT. Please provide details of what version ipod you have and what size disc etc.

    It is a problem with iTunes 9 for the 24 and 32 bit systems. iTunes 9 for the 64 bit is fine. You are going to have to uninstall iTunes 9 and reinstall 8.2.1 at: http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php?old_itunes=46#Download
    Yes, you will need to re-import your library, and you need to delete the .itl library file from your iTunes music folder. But then your pods will work fine again. The latest pod software is 1.1.2
    I tried to update it from tunes 8, but it is the most current. So when Tunes asks you to upgrade tell it no! Not until they get the software fixed. If you have windows vista ultimate, or Win7 with the 64 bit tunes loaded you should be ok.

    I uninstalled iTunes 9 and then reinstalled 8.2.1. At first, I thought my iTunes was working fine since I didn't have all my songs in my library added yet and it had synced fine. Then once I added all 1,200 of my songs and videos - the iPod would stop syncing more or less around the 500th song. I thought this would be a solution. I don't understand why it's not working.
