Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

Thanks for posting this - step 5 sounds drastic but does seem more likely to get at the root of the problem, given failed attempts to fix it otherwise using the rest of your steps. I suppose it all depends whether Apple are likely to bother fixing the problems themselves in the foreseeable future - if not, then taking the risk sounds like the only way to get much out of all of our iPods trashed by iTunes 9.

After reading through 5 pages of discussions about what seems to be a real problem (I thought it was just me!) I tried this and it did work! I haven't tried to sync to get my photos back on my 120GB classic, but I'll figure that out when and if Apple fixes the s/w. I retrieved all 2800+ songs and my all my movie/videos! Thanks for posting this "fix". I hope it helps someone else!!!

I did try this (i.e. putting the iPod into disk mode) again in case I'd overlooked it amongst all the other attempts, but definitely no luck - in fact I even managed to get the blue screen of death when trying to sync in disk mode. When I try to sync (at least beyond the 2500 songs I've succeeded in getting back on my Classic) my iPod makes fevered scratching hard-drive-very-hard-at-work sounds, which continue fruitlessly for a few hours before it finally shuts up and allows me to disconnect it, and I end up with no more songs than I started with. Does anyone else get this, or does it just stall? What on earth is it doing when it makes that noise?

Maybe to entertain ourselves while waiting for a solution, or even an acknowledgement of the problems, then has anyone ever come across a company that it treats its customers worse than this? Personally I can't think of one - releasing software that trashes their products and then maintaining a stony silence, while continuing to pester users to upgrade to the offending software is pretty impressive. Next they'll be trying to sell me other Apple products - as if...

I just bought a new iPod 160 and new Mac. They came with the latest software.
And I can't get the iPod to work at all. It gets stuck on the Apple logo.
I have restored it. The music is in there, as I can see it in iTunes.
But when I attempt to play it, it says there is no music, no songs, no composers, etc.
Then if I reset it, it just gets stuck, never plays.

Have you tried to restore with an ealier version of I tunes. I known that I tunes9 wont recognize Ipod classic unless it has the latest update. The only way to do it is use Itunes 7 or 8 to update then Itunes 9 will recognize it.
    I hope this helps.

I have an 80gb iPod Classic that refused to show up in iTunes 9.0.2 on any computer.

I uninstalled iTunes 9.0.2, deleted the Program Files references that were left, rebooted, installed iTunes 8.2.1(From FileHippo) and I got an error:

"iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing"

So, I uninstalled Quicktime and its Program Files counterparts, rebooted, did a repair install on iTunes 8.2.1 and iTunes opened just fine.

From there I followed your step in renaming my library and everything is good. Thanks for the help!

To update, my 80gb iPod Classic had firmware 1.0.2. After installing iTunes 8.2.1, it showed a firmware update of 1.1.2(Which probably showed up before, I just ignored it). I made a System Restore Checkpoint, then did the firmware update(57mb), after that worked, I decided to get ballsy and install iTunes 9.0.2. I did not uninstall 8.2.1, I just ran the 9.0.2 installer and everything installed fine and my iPod now shows up in 9.0.2!

So if your iPod doesnt show up in iTunes 9.0.2, this is what worked for me:
    1. Uninstall iTunes 9.0.2 & Quicktime
    2. Reboot
    3. Install iTunes 8.2.1. You can STOP here and your iPod will work, or you can continues the last few steps to try 9.0.2
    4. Your iPod will show up in iTunes, Click updates under your iPod to see if there are firmware updates. If there is one, do the update
    5. Install 9.0.2
    6. Enjoy your quirky iTunes until the next time it breaks.

    sethmo38,

You do realize that the system restore point would not have saved you any havoc if the firmware update caused any issues correct? Those restore points are for your windows install only, so it may have let you revert back to itunes 8.2.1 but not the ipod.

I just wanted to make sure that this was a clear point to all the other readers here.

I would like to react to HaggleLads' post.

For step 5: is there an alternative software available for the Ipod Classic as well?? The website you're refering to seems to have only software available for older Ipods...

I really hope that STEP 5 could solve the problem for me!!!

I did clearly state at the top of my guide that it would only work for 5.5G and below.

    Indeed you did HaggleLad.
Sorry, must have looked over it. Apparently I was too enthousiastic when I read a possible solution...

Is the problem solved ? Then why there is no comment here since 12th January ? At least this continuous nagging on our part may invoke some serious pity on Apple's part. pls, keep on writing. It helps in keeping the hope alive.

Im having a similar problem with My 80GB classic. But mine started just before I upgraded to iTunes 9. But i was previously able to restore my iPod and just start from scratch whenever I had a problem. Now my iPod doesnt even show up on the iTunes so I cant restore it. My iPod is only 2 years old.. yeah its out of warranty but its a good iPod. AND I have no $$$ to buy a new one. I need my music... is ther really nothing I can do to fix it??

As my iPod was brand new, I took it back to the store where it was replaced. I do not have any trouble with the new one.
Since the tech I was talking with on the phone had me remove my .xml file and the library file thinking that would solve the problem, and it did not, I replaced the original files (I did not trash them) to get back my well crafted smart playlists.
Everything is working perfectly. Still using iTunes 9, the same music, etc.
