Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

What does this corrupting look like?

I have a 160GB iPod Classic I got around September of last year. It was working fine until around Christmas... I left town for a while and didn't get the chance to charge my iPod for a long time. Additionally, I got a new computer (laptop with Windows 7) around New Year's.

So when I get back I install the newest iTunes and try charging my iPod, and it doesn't work. Whether it's in disk mode or not, it automatically disconnects. EVERY TIME. Sometimes, it says "Restore iPod with iTunes" or something to that effect when I unplug.

The thing is, the iPod won't show up in iTunes nor my OS when I connect it. I've tried different cables (first party), different USB cords, and both Windows and Macs. I've tried all the R's I can, but I can only get so far since it no computer will recognize it... I can't listen to music or anything because it won't charge.

I've been trying to figure out what's wrong for the last few weeks and it's so frustrating... if someone can relate this to the problem in the thread or give me any other suggestions, I'd be really appreciative.

I am unhappy at present, and I know it as all been said before but I'm not really bothered to be honest

Just like everyone else when Apple offers me a software update, I installed it properly, and it damages my Classics hardware?

Frankly that is a very unfair way of transacting. My beloved 120Gb iPod Classic is sitting here on my desk completely useless. iTunes begins to freeze and fails to recognise it. And like everyone else I'm left with something that is useless because the manufacturer has executed it useless.

I genuinely did not expect this of Apple. If I wanted this sort of service i could have gone to eBay and bought some cheap fake s**t from China, now equaly as unsatisfying.

Clearly Apple have what they wanted, our money, as far as I can see they are not interested now. This has changed my view on Apple and how wonderful I once thought they were.

This is definitley an Apple software issue - nothing to do with which OS you are running. I have been using XP on the same PC for several years - these problems only ocurred very recently - and after an iTunes "upgrade" - I have just tried to sync an older 80GB iPod we have adn failed (again) - and my earlier "trick" of using an old laptop to download a version of iTunes V8 - does not now seem to work???? Thus renedering the iPod useless - (it wiped it when I syncd with the "new" library) strangely it says that v 1.3 is the latest software for this particular iPod - when I'm sure it should be v 1.3.2 - it seems very strange that this has happened!

ARE APPLE consciously creating this problem to render all older iPods useless?? - so we all need to upgrade to newe iTouch's etc??

APPLE - we should be told - what the ** is going on with this problem??

You're absolutely right, dealmaker. Something very strange happened to me the other day when I plugged my Ipod into the computer. The Ipod has restored itself yet not lost the library!
It's very difficult to confront Apple with this problem since no one knows where their head office is, or who the chairman is. It's all very mysterious, however, my advice to you would be to view your consumer rights and visit a site where you can post your feedback (something you wear on your wrist which tells the time and something which likes to bury a bone-this is a hint)
Hopefully sometime soon Apple will take some acknowledgment of this problem.

...kind of pathetic that this was posted in September of last year and it's now January with as far as I've seen no sort of official patch or fix available. A videogame I would've paid $60 for new would've had a patch within a month, if not a couple weeks, and yet a $250 peice of equipment has nothing for four months?

Guess I'll know not to go Apple next time I buy a new mp3 player, which is sad as I've been using Apple iPods for nearly five years now.

Ipod Classic 80GB, Software Version: 1.1.2, Format: Windows
Itunes Version: 9.0.2.25. Windows XP Professional Version 2002.

Does not synch with iTunes fully. Synchs music for 5minutes then iTunes freezes/crashes.
Have run a chkdisk on ipod. No problems.
    Scanned for virus’. No problems.

Have checked internet forums and seems to be a common problem with no response from Apple.

    AT ALL. Disgusting.

Wish I would have known this before downloading the new updates. I got my 160gb classic right before christmas and its already gone and it hasn't been a month.

I can't believe they've had this issue since September and still haven't fixed it. My next mp3 is definitely not going to be from Apple now because they really showed us how much they care for our business by not fixing this.

Sorry to hear about your issues, have you tried installing iTunes 8 on another computer and restoring? If you try this, consider just restoring it and then syncing it with iTunes 9. Here is a link to install iTunes 8...

    Hope this works.

I already tried going back to itunes 8. It just tells me that it needs itunes 9 to run. Fortunately I have the warranty and I have an appointment at my Apple Store on Friday. But I know when I get a new one or get this one fixed, whatever they do on Friday, I'm not going back to itunes 9

Since your iPod is new, take it back to an apple store. It still has a warranty.
They replaced mine, The new one is working perfectly with iTunes 9 now.

I have restored my ipod many times in itunes 9, restored it many times in itunes 8, reformatted it with disc utility then tried to restore it.

Whatever damage itunes 9 caused will not be fixed by these methods, the hardware seems to be fatally damaged.

I've had all of these problems but was lucky enough to have fixed it (see earlier posts. The ipod works fine on my mums new pc running windows 7 and also my work one running XP.

I totally rebuilt my two home pc's running Vista and XP, then installed i-tune V9 but it still freezes i-tunes when i connect the fixed ipod. I restart the i-pod and get the following error message in i-tunes: 'The i-pod "Applesux iPod" cannot be synced. The required folder cannot be found.'

    Any suggestions???

    mushymom49:

What evidence or proof or sources can you provide that the 64 bit iTunes is immune to the iPod sync and corruption errors? The part that makes your post a bit less credible to me is that there is no such thing as a 24 bit system. Which leads to the question is it 32-bit iTunes (Mac or PC) problem or 32-bit Windows (PC only) that has the problem?

I have a windows PC laptop with Win 7 64-bit and am still unwilling to upgrade to iTunes 9 right now for fear I lose my two perfectly working iPod 160GB Sept 2007 model.
