Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

Does anyone know if Apple is actually working on any kind of fix? Because supposedly they have at least acknowledged the problem

    Hi everyone,
Just thought you would like to know that despite this injustice of creating software which does not work properly, Apple somehow still managed to make a profit out of it, £2.1 BILLION in fact. Nice to know that they're still thinking of us.
Anybody who does have a problem with the iTunes 9 software, I recommend using the ITunes 8 download provided by Technobuzz.net.

After the first iTunes 9 update I didn't notice anything wrong at first. Then I noticed that when trying to play a song or part way through a song (song was random and changed) the iPod would freeze on that screen for anywhere from 20 seconds to a minute until it skipped multiple songs and started playing again.

I then thought maybe a restore would fix the problem. Big mistake. After restoring my iPod with iTunes 9 it wouldn't sync my library, stalling on many songs for 10 seconds to 3 minutes, and I know that a lot of the songs it stalled on are not corrupted. It would give me a 1303 error saying it couldn't sync. I tried syncing a small playlist of about 25 songs, it said it was synced correctly. When I eject my iPod I look at it to see that there are no songs on my iPod at all. I keep having this issue, and when I checked this forum I realized that it was iTunes 9's fault.

For those wondering how to uninstall 9/install 8, first go to programs in your control panel and delete both iTunes AND Quicktime, since they're both installed with the iTunes installer it won't install the old version if you don't get rid of quicktime. Then go to C>Users>"Your User Name">My Music>iTunes and delete everything in this folder except for your music files (if your music files are somewhere else you can delete the whole folder). I would suggest running a registry cleaner after this to remove any iTunes 9 associations that your computer has. I recommend cCleaner for this. (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/)

    Then download iTunes 8.2.1 here:
    32 bit:
    http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php?old_itunes=46
    64 bit:
    http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php?old_itunes=45

If you're not sure if your computer is 32 or 64 then you probably have 32 bit.

    Then install with this installer.

When I had iTunes uninstalled I ran a scandisc to look for and find errors on my iPod and it came up with no issues. After installing and configuring iTunes 8 I plugged in my iPod and restored it. I tried just syncing about 25 songs first and they synced fine. I then tried a larger playlist of about 200 songs and it stalled 5-10 times during the sync, but this time only stalling for about 10-30 seconds at a time. After sync I ejected my iPod and it seemed to be working fine, but I am still getting the weird 'likes to lag out while playing/loading a song and skips a few songs and starts up again' problem that I started with from iTunes 9. It's driving me nuts and if anyone has a fix for this problem please share with me. I can now sync and play music, but this glitching is really annoying.

Just had the same thing happen! Not that I can see Apple giving any "real" help. My warranty out only in December. Have probably used my IPOD 20 times..brand new condition...I'm furious that I paid some $300 for this equipment and Apple is happy to put a tech on the phone for a mere $30 more! Sounds like Mr. Crabs from Sponge Bob! I'm pretty furious about the amount of money in downloads, and time I have invested in Itunes for this kind of service. I will tell everyone that I know not to invest a penny in Apple or Itunes.

    Solution found! - sort of...

My iPod was corrupted after using iTunes 9.

I've trawled through this and other forums looking for a solution and after trying pretty much every suggestion, I am convinced that for most people, this problem won't be able to be fixed with restoring or reformatting or by down grading, or by any upcoming patches or upgrades by Apple.

I am convinced that iTunes 9 damages the hard drive of Classics during syncing. And that the problems of syncs failing, and also the problems people have of restores failing, reformatting failing, iTunes freezing, the OS freezing, the iPod volume not ejecting etc are all the result of trying to read/write to the damaged drive.

I do however have a solution!

This solution worked for me with my 2007 iPod 160GB that was more than 2 years out of warranty. It's probably worth mentioning that I am in Australia so people overseas may have different experiences.

    Call Apple support.

Be polite. Explain that yes, even though your Ipod is out of warranty, Apple has responsiblity for causing the damage as it was their faulty software and normal use that caused the iPod to fail.

I went on to explain that I had tried all of the tips listed on the Apple site. Tried downgrading to iTunes 8. Tried it on a different computer. Restored it countless times, tried reformatting with disc utility. Pointed out that there are forums such as this one with hundreds of posts and many thousands of views and that it is obviously a widespread issue.

The tech I originally spoke to put me onto a senior tech after realising that I wasn't going to be satisfied by a simple "it's broken" answer.

The senior tech initially went through the motions looking for the easy answers but after he realised that I knew what I was talking about he took interest in the problem. I pointed him in the direction of this forum which he looked at briefly then said that he would call back after looking into it further. A while later he called back and asked me to reformat with disc utility again, there was a read/write error same I'd had previously.

The result of a long, polite phone conversation was that I was given an exemption code to give to the local Apple service centre and that they would repair/ replace the iPod as though it was still under warranty.

The Apple support guy was very helpful and clearly wanted to find a way to keep a good Apple customer happy.

The impression I got is that this problem is known about but there is no fix, and that Apple on the whole have basically given up on fixing it and hope to ignore the problem.

Long story short: They couldn't fix it so there is now a brand new iPod waiting for me to pick up at the Apple service centre.

I used Itunes 9.0.2 to sync some music to my brand new Ipod Classic 160GB once ... before starting to use MediaMonkey 3.2. I'm playing with iTunes 9.0.3 this week to see if anything's better, but frankly ... the third party software runs rings around iTunes, is more of a full-featured digital music management system, and is more intuitive (once you learn the basics). I recommend it ... for Windows users.

I have installed Itunes 9.0.3. My 80GB Classic still locks up Itunes during the sync process.... sigh

The new update is worthless to everybody still experiencing the problem. There just doesn't seem to be a fix... only replacements.

I will be contacting Apple support about this very soon. I paid good money for that Ipod, and to have to trash it after only one year of use is bogus. Everything was A.O.K before apple released that crappy update. They deserve to fix what they caused.

I shouldn't be surprised. I connected my new (December) iPod Classic 160GB to my pic with iTunes 9.0.2 installed, and immediately it told me there was a firmware update for the iPod, which usually sounds like a Very Good Idea, so I installed it.

Now, trying to use iTunes 8.2.1, which many members here recommend over the new version, it reports "You must have iTunes 9.0 or later" to use my iPod. Hrm. Firmware that locks out backwards compatibility.

    It's an Apple product. I should've known.

    David,

It is KNOWN that the iPods released in the fall of 2009 REQUIRE iTunes 9.0 to operate. It's listed as a system requirement.

And yes that device did have a firmware update which allowed the Genius mixes to be carried on the iPod. I have 2 of them and they work just fine. I don't understand why you are trying to use a older version of iTunes with this edition of an iPod unless you have an older iPod and are afraid of the corruption.

So in summary, no the firmware didn't lock out the older version its by requirements.... Secondly if you are so unhappy with a "Apple" product why did you aquire yoru classic to begin with?

Wow, put me on the defensive, why doncha? Sit down in your saddle, please, this isn't a cavalry charge. It wasn't KNOWN to me as this is my first iPod. Yep, sure enough, here it is waaaaaaay down at the bottom of a page I've never bothered reading. http://www.apple.com/ipodclassic/specs.html

I didn't shop for this. I've resisted them for many years, using other alternatives, and finally got one this Christmas as I've been pondering having a "max storage" hand-held to store my complete collection in digital form. Since Christmas morning, I've been learning....

So. I was only curious about using iTunes 8.2.1 after reading some of the 30+ pages of concerns raised in this thread. Since iTunes does a worse job of managing and updating my files than the 3rd party tool I mentioned, and iTunes seems to have a propensity to wiping out the music that other software syncs when I try to sync Itunes U or video or other media, I won't be using it much anyway. In fact, the third party software is using the 8.2.1 drivers and support files just fine.

So why am I doing this? A little OCD tweaking, perhaps. I'm not "unhappy" with this iPod. Besides some goofiness with covers not being displayed in Now Playing, it works quite nicely.

Stop trying to defend this turf. It doesn't need defending.

I think I am in the same boat as everyone else here after reading (most) of the thread. Has anyone with this issue had any luck with 9.0.3 actually fixing the freeze issue?

Amazing. Apple is going to loose a lot customers over this. I called and they acted like this was the first time they had heard the problem. I directed them to the forums and they basically told me that I needed to send a letter to apple feedback, which I did and have not heard one peep since. At this point I am going to search for a new device and a new company.
