Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

I installed the new update, version 9.0.3 and it did nothing for me. I'm sick of this, I'm thinking about switching to a Zune

I am in the same situation as Ziggi B. I did get a new iPod Classic but it is the same generation as the original one, which broke down. It synced good the first time but now I am afraid to sync it again because it is possible that it will give problems again (like my original iPod, which worked very good until fatal sync). Did you encounter errors with replaced iPod? I suppose it will be difficult to get yet another one from retailer for me after this one so this far I waited to sync it a second time with iTunes. Can I take the risk?

Seeing as Apple still isn't paying any attention to this tremendously bad issue, I guess it'll be a good idea to start warning people to avoid Ipod Classic for the moment.

I, for one, am probably going to go down to Walmart/Target/Bestbuy during my free time and just post sticky notes near the Ipod Classics reading "Warning: Does not work with the current version of Itunes."

I have been following these posts for the past weeks and thought now was a good time to post my experiences, maybe they will help uncover the problem.

I have an iPod Classic 120G purchased in the winter of 2008.
I have a second iPod Classic 160G purchased in the winter of 2009.

The 120G was purchased in the US. The 160G was purchased in the Netherlands.

Both of these iPods are running the latest OS/software. I checked for updates last night.

My 120G is filled with videos.
My 160G is filled with music. Both are full.

I run the latest version of Snow Leopard on my Mac.
I use the iPhone cable to sync to iTunes.
I have the latest version of iTunes (just upgraded yesterday 9.0.3 I think).

I have experienced no syncing issues what so ever. My iPods appear, sync and function perfectly. I never experienced any issues before or after upgrading to iTunes 9.

So, if I am not having any trouble at all, and still am able to sync and use my iPods, what is different about my situation and the rest?

What would cause this problem? I am assuming that there are far more people without problems than with, but still.....what is the common factor? Maybe uncovering that will help solve this issue?

While trying to fix my ipod i downgraded to itunes 8. Since I got a new one, I haven't synced to itunes 9 yet. If your new pod synced OK the first time it may be that your new one is ok with itunes 9. I don't think that this corruption occurs with every classic synced with itunes, just a large percentage. But like you I'm not really game to try. I would really love to upgrade back to 9 and get all the playlists that i made while using itunes 9 back (I have saved my itunes 9 library in the hope of finding a way to make it work with itune 8.

I'm considering upgrading to the newest itunes and syncing it just to see if it works. My new ipod is on the same original out-of-date warranty, but electronic devices comes with a mandatory 90 day warranty in Australia which will apply, so if the new one fails I will be able to get it replaced again. At the moment I'm just happy to have a working ipod again.

This problem obviously doesn't happen to every ipod classic synced with itunes 9 or there would be almost no ipod classics working at all. Judging by the number of posts on this and other forums I'm guessing it has happened to thousands of ipods. Which is a pretty large number, but it seems not large enough for Apple to be concerned. The fact that for some people at least they have replaced out of warranty ipods, shows that they know they are at fault.

It seems that the common factor is ipod classics (various versions) and itunes 9, 9.0.1 an 9.0.2.

I am curious if any one will have an ipod die after syncing with itunes 9.0.3?

ok been a long frutrting time. My A-ipod works just fine never exposed to itunes 9. My b-ipod managed after days & days to actually sync ONCE. Now i got Nothin' but a brick. I cannot do any thing with b-ipod. its useless. Does apple have some sort of exchange program running yet? I would be more than happy to send them this brick o mine for a replacement.

After the first iTunes 9 update I didn't notice anything wrong at first. Then I noticed that when trying to play a song or part way through a song (song was random and changed) the iPod would freeze on that screen for anywhere from 20 seconds to a minute until it skipped multiple songs and started playing again.

I then thought maybe a restore would fix the problem. Big mistake. After restoring my iPod with iTunes 9 it wouldn't sync my library, stalling on many songs for 10 seconds to 3 minutes, and I know that a lot of the songs it stalled on are not corrupted. It would give me a 1303 error saying it couldn't sync. I tried syncing a small playlist of about 25 songs, it said it was synced correctly. When I eject my iPod I look at it to see that there are no songs on my iPod at all. I keep having this issue, and when I checked this forum I realized that it was iTunes 9's fault.

For those wondering how to uninstall 9/install 8, first go to programs in your control panel and delete both iTunes AND Quicktime, since they're both installed with the iTunes installer it won't install the old version if you don't get rid of quicktime. Then go to C>Users>"Your User Name">My Music>iTunes and delete everything in this folder except for your music files (if your music files are somewhere else you can delete the whole folder). I would suggest running a registry cleaner after this to remove any iTunes 9 associations that your computer has. I recommend cCleaner for this.

    Then download iTunes 8.2.1
If you're not sure if your computer is 32 or 64 then you probably have 32 bit.

    Then install with this installer.

When I had iTunes uninstalled I ran a scandisc to look for and find errors on my iPod and it came up with no issues. After installing and configuring iTunes 8 I plugged in my iPod and restored it. I tried just syncing about 25 songs first and they synced fine. I then tried a larger playlist of about 200 songs and it stalled 5-10 times during the sync, but this time only stalling for about 10-30 seconds at a time. After sync I ejected my iPod and it seemed to be working fine, but I am still getting the weird 'likes to lag out while playing/loading a song and skips a few songs and starts up again' problem that I started with from iTunes 9. It's driving me nuts and if anyone has a fix for this problem please share with me. I can now sync and play music, but this glitching is really annoying.
