Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

After following a routine of uninstalling itunes 9 and installed itunes 8, then restoring my ipod, then updating to itunes 9, then syncing my ipod, it works. However I found only up to a 1000 songs or so. So i just synced my playlists (about 1000 songs) so i have all my favorite albums on my ipod, and it works. So i'm leaving it like that till i know apple have officially sorted this, it will be going no where near a usb port in my macbook pro for a long time! sad but least I can travel with some music to listen too!

Don't really know if what i did was the cause for my Ipod to suddenly begin to sync and work again, but i too was having syncing problems with my classic since the 9.0 itunes upgrade. It would freeze at a certain point everytime, take forever for my itunes to recognize it, etc.. Now it all of a sudden syncs all the way through though.. What i did was, I put my ipod into disk mode and restored it through Itunes. Since then, it has synced everytime i have attempted to sync it.

If you go into your music you should see iTunes library, drag this file to your desktop, uninstall version 9, install version 8.some and then import the library file to version 8. it works sort of but does fix the 'not seeing iPod in iTunes problem'

I have the same problem, quite ridiculous that apple has not created a fix for it yet, not impressed.

Regarding going into "disk mode" in order to fix the problem...I know the procedure to do this, but unfortunately the screen is broken on my iPod and so I don't know exactly when the Apple logo shows up so that I can press on the select and pause keys. Can someone tell me approximately how many seconds there are between the time the unit is reset and the time the logo shows up? And if you're curious as to why I use an iPod with a broken screen, it's because I used it in my car and can control navigation through my car as well. Thanks!

I had same problem but it now seems to be fixed. I put ipod in to disc mode when it rebooted, it then synced with itunes and when finished i put it back in to normal mode. Now updates and works as normal. No idea why this works but it has.

Signed up to say that my iPod Classic 120GB has stopped working also after updating to iTunes 9.
I've read through this thread and tried everything.

I've downgraded to a later version of iTunes (8.something) and I've got my iPod sycning about 600 songs out of 1551 songs.
I was happy to get this many on it, and because I'm stupid, I thought I'd try syncing it again. This time I only got 21 out of 1551 songs on it.

    It's really frustrating.
Has anyone had any luck since the last post in here?

OMG, Thank you so much for posting this! The reformat is really what seemed to do the trick. Not actually sure if I had to uninstall iTunes9...probably good I did anyway. Once Vista did it's auto-reboot for the quick reformat everything seems to be working. I'll post if that changes, but hopefully that won't happen. lol

SERIOUSLY, DID A REFORMAT IN DISK MODE THROUGH "MY COMPUTER" ON VISTA AFTER UNINSTALLING ITUNES9. ON REINSTALL GOT A MESSAGE THAT MY IPOD CLASSIC (SERIES3) WAS CORRUPT, IT ALLOWED RESTORE AND THEN WAS ABLE TO SYNC ALL 2039 SONGS I HAD, INCLUDING PURCHASES AS WELL AS ALL MY PICS WITH NO ISSUE.

I don't know if something was done between Apple and Microsoft for Vista. But I'll take it. Thank you Pandoraaj009 for your tip posted 12/13/09. You're my savior!

I have tried everythng to restore my ipod now that it's corrupt. I checked every site and did everything I could possibly do to on my own to fix it... nothing. So now i'll be paying 30$ to speak to an apple expert, if they can't help then there's obviously no hope. It's sick because I even uninstalled itunes9 and tried reinstalling itunes7 but it won't let the installation complete because the files have been used by a newer itunes. I hit a dead end but if this expert helps I'll let you all know so you can save the 30$... and 275 on a new ipod.

For anyone who purchased their Ipod in the EU do not forget that all consumer goods come with a 2 year warranty under EU law regardless of the length of the Apple warranty. Further details at http://ec.europa.eu/consumers/consint/safe_shop/guarantees/indexen.htm

Now there is a vast body of literature on this subject ranging from class-action suits to alternatives: there are names of alternative devices among these, if you have the patience to go through all the pages.
