Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

Apple's lack of response to this is just baffling. I own 4 iPod Classics and a 64GB iTouch, so I've been a good customer for quite a while. But they clearly they have a problem with hard drive-based iPods and the latest version of iTunes, yet they remain silent on the issue (much like Toyota).

After trying every solution on this thread, one of my four is essentially bricked, and there's no way I'm going to try and sync any of the other three, since they're just out of warranty.

Please Apple, do the right thing and at least tell your customers you're working on a solution.

I fully support the message given above. My iPod 80GB can't also be synced anymore since the introduction of iTunes 9.

There's a new update for iTunes. Fixes enclosed are:
iTunes 9.0.3 provides a number of important bug fixes, including:

    • iTunes no longer ignores your "Remember password for purchases" setting.
    • Addresses problems with syncing some Smart Playlists and Podcasts with iPod.
    • Resolves a problem recognizing when iPod is connected.
    • Addresses issues that affect stability and performance.
I don't suppose that would fix the problems referred to in this thread.

Thank you Apple... and now all the others it's solved the problem for are going to say thank you, aren't you?

The issue which is discussed in this thread is not mentioned indeed. Can others confirm that 9.0.3 no longer has this problem?

Did anyone that did have the problem and solved it one way or another install 9.0.3? If so did it work out ok? I got my classic back to work (see some pages back) and am now waiting for reports that it's ok to install 9.0.3.

I've got 2 recent macs - 9.0.3 did nothing to revise my Classic of a few years back.

I'm glad it worked for you. It did not work for me.

I was able to solve the problem by reformatting my 160GB classic using a DOS command. The hard drive was formatted to NTFS an not FAT32, but iTunes recognized it as a new iPod. The iTunes restore worked from there. One week and several syncs later, Everything appears ok.

iTunes 9 just messed my iPod up yesterday. Its a classic 80GB that I have had for nearly 2 years, but has never had any problems before - in fact, I just synced it the other day. Now iTunes has upgraded I just get told there are no items for music/tv/video etc Have tried the 5Rs, have tried a lot of things, but nothing will work. Any advice?!?!! Please?

I just got off the phone with Apple setting up my 2nd repair service for the crash/skipping issue. 6th generation classic 120GB purchased less than 6 months ago. Was doing fine at first until seemingly iTunes 9. Also, I know there is supposed to be some driving spinning noise as songs are cached for playback, but I don't think it's supposed to click like a dead hard drive. After the 1st repair they simply mailed it back saying they couldn't reproduce. Duh. If you only spend 20 minutes testing a device for an issue that happens randomly, you're likely not to find anything wrong. Fix it Apple.

I have same problem. Can't sync iPod Classic 120 G with iTunes 9 on a Mac. It crashes iTunes systematically.

I called the support and the only diagnosis they can give is that I should send my iPod for repair...

However, I tried to restore and sync with iTunes on a PC. And this works...

It seems they have a real problem with iTunes Mac

Don't know what the problem is.. My ipod was originally synced to my IMac with over 5000 songs, but after the 9.0 upgrade, it wouldn't sync anymore after a certain limit before crashing, it does however sync on my Macbook though.. There is a problem when i sync it to my macbook though(Just 500 songs though).. After it gets through syncing, the ipod doesn't play the songs that were on the computer pre 9.0 upgrade. It only plays the music post 9.0... What could be the casue of this?

I've solved part of the problem
it might just be due to the region of which the music downloaded
because i listen to japanese and korean music and whenever i try to synchronize my ipod with them in the library everything gets screwed up but if its not there my ipod synchronizes perfectly and preforms great
maybe it the music that is being downloaded that is not compliant with itunes
im not sure but apple has to fix this

Itunes 9.0.3 fixed my problem too. For anyone else I uninstalled Itunes 9, reinstalled Itunes 9.0.3 and it restored my Ipod. I had to plug it in and disconnect it a couple of times but it finally recognized my Ipod. When I was installing Itunes I specified that I wanted to manually put music onto my Ipod. I'm able to load groups of songs but I'm a little hesitant to try syncing it automatically.

Honestly under these conditions, I would never say thank you to Apple. This is unacceptable customer service. I have been trying for months to get this solved and was very close to relegating my Ipod to an expensive paper weight. Thankfully they made an update but they should be apologizing to us for not at least making a statement letting us know that they were/are working on something. I hope other people honestly reconsider Apple an alternative to the PC and other competition. That is the only way it seems we can express our concerns to Apple by letting them know that as the consumer, we have the power to spend our money elsewhere and will. I know I will probably reconsider choosing the competition from now on even though I have been a devoted Apple user. At least if I pick a Microsoft product I will be allowed to talk to someone even though my warranty is up. Everybody has lost in this situation.
