Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

Sorted. Ok - so iTunes 9.0.3 destroyed my 160 gB iPod classic - disk corrupt, iPod not recognised, computer locks every time I try to sync - disk space seems to have disappeared, etc. I spent hours trying fixes, doing what apple says, etc but none of them worked (it would claim it was resetting but would then just crash).

I have now fixed it (no help from Apple) by taking a different laptop (which hasn't previously had iTunes installed), going to a website which allows downloading of old versions of iTunes (google oldapps) - downloaded the last version of iTunes 8 and then synced. IPod classic reset, no problems at all, works perfectly.

Most importantly, it fixes my problem. Nearly as importantly, it proves to me beyond doubt that the problem is iTunes 9 - NOT my hard drive, old iPod, etc. Now all I have to remember is to never take the upgrades for iTunes on that laptop.

Cogs_ranch, just out of curiosity, were you able to retain your whole library after synching to the older version of Itunes? I'm thinking about doing what you've mentioned but am afraid I'm going to lose about half of my library as one half of it is imported music as opposed to Itunes purchases.

I lodged a complaint with BBC Watchdog (an English consumer affairs programme on the TV) before Christmas alerting them to the problems we are all experiencing and the lack of support from Apple. I received a call from them today, they are going to take it further - watch this space!

    Dear Ipod users
As with weeding68, I too received a call from BBC Watchdog and I am delighted to announce that they are pursuing with this case. To all UK victims, watch Watchdog (7:00pm Thursday) when they will be discussing issues to come in forthcoming programmes.

    Best of luck!

My ipod classic is still visable via windows explorer on my PC, I can even manually load all of my itunes library onto my ipod using windows explorer, although my ipod won't recognise it's got music loaded! If I then plug my ipod into my laptop and open up windows explorer it too recognises my ipod and the music loaded onto it. If I click onto one of the songs, the itunes programme automatcally loads up and starts playing the song, although itunes won't actually recognise my ipod. How frustrating!!!!!

    Dear Hollie Finch,
What happened in the BBC Watchdog show ? Was it actually aired? We should approach similar media ways that might hopefully shake apple a bit.

The programme actually begins next week, but Lara at Watchdog informed me that it will be in a later programme. She said to watch the shows for news on upcoming issues in the programme. With any luck, Mitch Benn might write a song about it.
He writes songs about the companies Watchdog deals with:

    Virgin Media

    Enjoy!

Apt choice of name 'nowappledisliker' lol. Watchdog is doing research into this and they usually get extremely good results from their appeals and campaigns on TV so hopefully it should be finalised soon.

I agree totally, Apple's software did cause the damage, and they don't seem to care, and my ipod is now useless, but it does however, make a very good paperweight.

    Lol

In case anyone is counting... I'm adding my name to the list of disgruntled users whose ipods won't synch after the itunes 9 upgrade. Not sure what to do... buy a new ipod??? What's to say this won't happen with a new ipod and the next vesion of itunes. I am going to explore programs to convert itunes to another format to download into another mp3 player. If anyone finds a good program, please post here. Since Apple doesn't seem motivated to fix this problem, I am going to vote with my pocketbook.

    Hi Iwalker77
    My advice:
Buy another mp3 player. This worked for me as the company which made my mp3 have a genius piece of software called 'Content Transfer' enabling you to transfer your whole library onto another mp3 without reloading all your songs!!!
Just search 'Content Transfer' on Google. That should help.
Alternatively, send me your email address and I'll give you detailed instructions on what to do.

Finally, finally, finally!!!! After a few weeks of screwing with this thing I finally got my songs (only 1319) to sync over to my 120gb classic. Don't ask me what process I followed specifically because I couldn't tell you. What I can tell you is that I formatted, restored, tried to sync, reformatted, re-restored and re-synced again and again and again over the course of those few weeks. After attempting again yesterday and receiving a number of continuous error messages, I finally walked into the room and expected to again find the error message saying that the disk couldn't be copied, it indicated that syncing had completed. I ejected the Ipod and, after checking, found that the Ipod contained all of my music and it played. Now the 50 million dollar question: do I ever attempt to sync my Ipod again and run the risk of screwing it up another time?
