Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

    Hi there, Calico1
I had the very same thing happen to me, and I would warn you NOT to sync the rest. In my experience, this whole facade lasts about two months or so and then will revert to how it originally was in it's broken state. It is your choice whether you want to take the chance, I believe mine allowed me 15 syncs before it reverted to it's broken state, but I would not wish you to take the chance. It is a bug in the software, but never fear, because as with weeding68 we Brits are taking advantage of our consumer issues programme Watchdog in which (hopefully) the issue will be featured and WE WILL FINALLY GET SOME ANSWERS!!!!

    All the best

Hollie Finch, I guess I spoke too soon. It appears that although Itunes finally synced my music back to the Ipod, I found today that the music is not playing correctly. The music stops during mid-play and sometimes skips to a different song, etc. I've always been a believer of voting with the wallet. If you screw me I just don't deal with you again. I'm going to make every effort to migrate to another system, at which point Apple can kiss my a**.

    My advice to you:
Purchase an NWZ-S545. Voice recorder, FM RADIO, Photos, Videos and Music, all at a slightly cheaper price than any Ipod. (Don't ask the brand just search on Google) you will soon find. My oldest mp3 player has NEVER failed (only needed new earphones) I have had it for almost ten years!!! Please, do yourself a favour, purchase the above code name and be happy with music and video again!!!!
P.S they also offer a brilliant program 'Content Transfer' just Google that too, and transfer your entire library without pain of rebooting the whole thing!

    All the best, Good Luck!

Hollie Finch, thanks for the suggestions and I will definitely pursue them. The only downside is that I have a couple of thousands of dollars invested in car kits, cradles, and portable Ipod players to accommodate my Ipods and Iphone that will now go to waste. BUT, if it sends a message to Apple, then good. What amazes me is that in spite of all of these problems Apple continues to push the Itunes 9 update, which pretty much says it all for me.

I just posted another topic regarding this issue. Is anyone keeping a running tally on how many corruptions weve had now?

    Hi all,

I have just seen the Watchdog program, I now see that I am not the only one with this issue. The more and more I look in to this the more I get annoyed. This is an issue that Apple have created and they are the ones that should resolve this! I find the way that they have been treating us is disgusting and I have copied an email to the local press and also trading standards. It is about time Apple took some responsibility in relation to this and resolved the questions. I so far have had phones put down on me and also a refusal to answer my questions. When is this going to end. I feel this is a sneaky ploy to get us all to change our Ipods! Sort it out Apple! We willnot back down!!!

My ipod has been working perfectly, until Tuesday of this week when I synced my ipod!

Now, it doesn't connect to itunes (itunes 9.0), it is frozen and won't click through to my playlists and I have tried restoring it and nothing is working. I have emailed apple today so I hope to get a response on this and hopefully it can be resolved. I am lost without it but won't be buying another one if it is an itunes issue...

Gutted and not too sure if or how I can rectify the problem...?!

After reading the first 3 pages of this thread and the last 2, I have come to the conclusion that this is not an issue that can be resolved.
On the other hand, I feel as if I do not have reason to complain because my 120gb Ipod Classic still "works" as in, my music was not deleted upon syncing. However, the issues that I have encountered cannot simply be overlooked. My problems are as listed. Will someone please tell me if this is a separate issue so I can resolve it.

    1. Noticed problem when songs were freezing then skipping ahead all of a sudden so i plugged the Ipod into the computer thinking to restore(after transferring material through sharepod)

    2. Ipod would not sync, does not show up in itunes but does show up in computer, and absolutely freezes itunes to the point that i have to close through task manager.

    3. Music is still on Ipod and I am not as smart as all of you to backup the Ipod contents and CANNOT restore it because i will loose important items.

    4. Ipod will not connect with Sharepod (Software used to transfer content from Ipod to itunes)

    5. I'm scared to do anything else to fix the issue because regardless of the problems I have now, I still have a semi-working Ipod. Plus, I don't want to loose the content I have on it which means buying a new one is out of the question.

Plus, I don't know about most of you, but I purchased the classic solely for the purpose of space. I had a Ipod Touch and an older Ipod Nano prior to the Touch, but neither lived up to my expectations. No matter the issues I am currently having with this Ipod Classic, I know i cannot resort to another version because they simply do not meet my demand. Thus, either Apple can fix this issue or come out with another Ipod that holds a ton because I don't have the patience to learn another mp3 system. Then again, that's just me.

Well, I'm late to the party but having read a lot of this discussion I'm no closer to a resolution.

I seem to have the same problem that everyone else is having, iTunes 9 has seemingly corrupted my iPod classic since a recent update. A lot of people seem to be getting a message that their iPod is corrupted by mine won't even turn on or charge and isn't recognised by my computer. At first I just thought I had a battery problem but it was working fine a couple of days ago but the battery was almost out, when I put it on a dock to charge it didn't work, several other docks and a couple of computers had the same result. THings such as my iPod clicking whilst playing are issues which have been identified in this discussion as suggesting a corrput drive so I'm assuming that is what happened. I'm going to get in touch with Apple now but I'm not holding out much hope.

I'm thoroughly disappointed that Apple don't seem to be recognising the problem and I don't see how they can dismiss something that they've caused.

Anyway, I'll keep looking here for any updates but I was wondering if anyone had the same problem as me with the iPod not even turning on?

After weeks of my iPod Classic not working, I fiddled around with a few settings to see what would come of it.

Anyway, despite my iPod Classic not being listed under the 'Safely remove hardware' option in the system tray, I went into device manager then saw it listed under Disk Drives.

I right clicked, clicked properties, then the 'volumes' tab.
Originally I clicked 'populate' and nothing came up but an error, but after a few attempts at reconnecting, I managed to click populate and it showed the information.

I went to iTunes and found my iPod had synced perfectly and was working fine.
It also disappears about 10-15 seconds later from Device Manager.

I have never had the issue of my iPod ever malfunctioning. My only issue was that Windows 7 had stopped recognising it with a pop-up as you plug it in and that iTunes never recognised it.

This may or may not be completely useless information, but I thought I'd pass it on anyway for you to read.

I hear the Zune HD is a thing of beauty. Also Archos makes a nice media player. The Archos isn't as compact as the iPod, but they make a 320GB model. I've got one of the 3rd Gen Archos. The only reason I quit using it and bought an iPod is because the battery contacts kept bending and losing contact.

I tried to sync my IPod Classic 160GB tonight and it bricked. I've been working on getting it up and running all day. I've run diagnostic on the HD and they all come out fine. Looks like an iTunes problem. I found a download of iTunes version 8.2. I'll try it and see it it fixes my problem. If not I suppose I'll have to go shopping.

I can write files to the iPod like a portable HD no problems, but it frteezes every time I try to sync. I've tried retoring, using older versions of iTunes. Nothing works. Seems to be a software or firmware issue since I can write to the drive no problems. I can understand if the HD, battery, or logic board failed, but this mysterious failure chaps my a$$. I need high capacity, but I won't be buying another iPod classic. Who needs a media player that mysteriously craps out for no good reason? I'm not sure I buy the bit about Apple canning the iPod classics because they still sell them. It is quite a coinsidence that all these classics are failing at the same time.

What version of iTunes are you using? When did you install the new version?

I got mine back to normal state after formatting the ipod as if it were a plain harddrive, then connecting and letting iTunes restore it.

Uum this is possibly a dumb question but can I Tunes 8 not be reinstalled. I have d/loaded ITunes 9 but have not yet synched either my classic 80 or 120. Having read this thread I am most reluctant to try. Does I tunes 9.1 resolve this issue does anybody know?
