Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

Hi, Not sure whether I have the same problem, but...

Installed latest update on Thursday 17 June, then yesterday I added a couple of Cds to library on computer.. then plugged in IPod Classic and got message veryifing Ipod, fair enough...then update just stopped. Left it for awhile and still no little icon revolving in devices, so cntlaltdelete showed' Itunes not responding' so unplugged message 'OK to disconnect'. Ipod plays perfectly without updated library. Downloaded 9.2 again, same sequence...am I doing something wrong?

FYO 26000+ tracks, no video, no photos 28gb free.

    Help?

After installing iTunes 9.2, my iPod Classic 160GB fails after the verifying. Once it tries to sync, I am getting the spinning beach ball on the mac until I force quit the application. The process completely freezes iTunes. I cannot ask to restore, nor does it attempt to restore the iPod. I was able to sync prior to upgrading. My iPhone has no problems syncing with the new version, only my iPod Classic. I can still play what was already on the iPod, just can no longer perform a sync.

I think the iPod should be rebuilding it's library, as iTunes 9.2 created a new library, but for some reason, it can't do that function so that synching will occur. I hope there is a fix soon. I cannot experiment with another computer as I don't have the disk space to contain my entire music library.

Add me to the masses who have been experiencing issues with iTunes 9.X and the iPod Classic. I recently purchased my iPod from Costco, so I have a couple of months to see if anything goes wrong and I can just return it there for a new one.

I had iTunes 9.1, or something like that, and originally, the sync worked fine, and my library was transferred to my iPod with no issues. The next sync, when I added some tracks, went fine as well. The third sync did not go so well. It took iTunes a long time to recognize and verify my iPod, and when I attempted to sync, I got the eternal pinwheel. I force quit iTunes and disconnected my iPod, and found that nothing had changed.

I tried it again, and this time, not only did the iPod not sync with iTunes, but I lost all of my album art. Very strange.

I upgraded to iTunes 9.2 and hoped that would solve the issue. The next attempt, and this time, iTunes would not even verify the iPod. Then something very strange happened. The iPod showed up in my iTunes navigation pane. As a test, I switched to "Manually manage music and videos", and was able to do so. I added an album to my iPod, and although it hesitated, with pinwheel, it did work. I then switched back to auto-sync mode. Pinwheel again. As I'm going through this discussion thread, I get tossed back over to the space where iTunes is running, and the iPod is syncing; however, the amount of music it reads as being on the iPod is around 54GB, when originally it had 66GB. Now iTunes is adding music to the iPod that was there to begin with. Eventually, everything seems to go fine, but when I check out the iPod, only half of the album art is there, and the art and albums are mixed up. When I go to play an album, the iPod resets. Now it's back on, but everything is completely jacked up. Looks like I'll be returning my iPod for a new one and starting the process again, but hopefully this time with iTunes 8. Thanks Apple! You couldn't care less.

Well, after finding this thread, all I can say is thank god I didn't try to do a synch with my classic iPod using upgrade 9. It's frustrating that I can't put new music on, but at least I don't have a paperweight. I sent apple an email about this thread. Hopefully, I'll get a reply back. This needs to be addressed.

Friday evening, June 18, 2010 I synced my iPod.
Saturday morning, June 19, 2010 I installed the latest version of iTunes - 9.2.0.61
Sunday evening, June 20, 2010 I tried to sync again and saw iTunes freeze. No new podcasts for me. My 160 GB classic still works, but it is not as functional a device as it was.

I think there is a bug in this release!

    Any ideas?

The same thing happened to me
The difference is that I lost all my songs, but they are still taking the storage space
I tried to reinstall itune, downgrade it
    and it didn't work
    What should I do?

Me too. After the "upgrade" last night, I am unable to sync my wife's 120GB Classic. I can force quit iTunes and get the iPod out.
When I try to sync I get the pinwheel and it never ends. So far the iPod still seems to be working correctly. Thankfully.
    Very frustrating.

I was finally able to sync my iPod today. What I did was turn off automatic syncing when a device is mounted. In iTunes Preferences under Devices, check the box next to Prevent automatic syncing of iPhones, iPods and iPads.

Once I did that, I was able to manually sync my iPod. Hope this helps those who can't sync but can still use their iPods. I didn't have to restore, which would not have been fun.

I would format his ipod classic from within windows if I could but my computer doesn't even recognize the ipod as being connected. I have tried hooking up his ipod to 2 other computers. One with XP and one with Vista. Neither one of those recognize that the ipod is connected either. I have left his ipod connected to our computer for 8 hours. Nothing happens. If I hold the menu and middle button down while connected to our computer until it resets I get the message on his ipod Use Itunes to restore. It then tries to recover it but the restore fails and I end up back at the message use Itunes to restore on his ipod. Occasionally I get the message an ipod has been detected , but cannot be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the ipod. Then try again. An unknown error occurred. (1621) Just a never ending loop. Thanks for trying to help though.

Same issue here, works with both iPhones. Thre long calls with Apple Help, they claim to have never experienced this problem! Can they not read? They want me to take my 160GB iPod to the nearest Apple store (an hour plus) for an "appointment" to fix what they calim is probably a hardware issue. I have an empy iPod and not much hope.

I managed to get my ipod to be 'seen' as plain harddrive by putting it in service mode, which is different from reset; I found somewhere on this forum or at some techie-website how to do that. You can't miss it because if so there's a textmenu, as if it were an old DOS computer, with some sevice tests etc. In that mode it is no ipod no more and you can format it. I'll try to find out how exactly and post it here.

... menu and select button until it restarts and then when the apple appears select and play.

But reviewing the posts I don't think it is necessary. If you connect the ipod and make sure itunes is not running, then it should appear in your explorer or finder on mac as a harddrive; you can format it from there. Note that it can take a really, really, really long time before it looks like it is starting and then the process can go very slow, for mine t took five hours - but it is still working now!
After the format the ipod is just a harddrive with some buttons, but when you connect it to the computer and allow itunes to start, it will restore.

One last note: in the whole messing up process leading to the sync problem, it is very well possible that some music files / songs have been damaged. They too might keep your ipod from syncing. You can try to find those by looking at the itunes screen, the status messages on top, where it shows what songs are being transferred to the ipod. If it always stalls at the same song, you have no other choice than to find that one on you computer and delete it. If you have a backup, you can retrieve the song from there and put it back in...

Good luck. I'm amazed that still today so many people experience this problem and apple just does not give a ****. What a shame for such a company.

    so I am not alone...

I downloaded last version of Itunes 9.2 and now I can't syncronize anymore. In fact, since I switched to Windwos 7 problems started to show up but now this is it, no more sync. I have tried everything possible. At least this has not currupted my iPod and my files are safely backed up in a remote location.
