Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

It strongly looks to me as though iPod firmware 1.1.3 is thrashing the disk. I would downgrade (Shift-Restore : locate the .ipsw files using finder etc.) Seems to have worked for me. More to follow, but it's late.

add me to the list of those people whose ipod classics no longer will sync with the update of itunes 9.2.

what a crock of spit. the ipod would at least still work, without syncing with itunes.

then i tried to restore the ipod. it restored - and erased everything off of it. now it still won't sync - so i have an ipod that won't play music, or sync.

To diagnose this (which is obviously basically Apple's problem, but until they take care of it), does anyone know how iTunes > iPod software actually adresses the disk? What it feels like in my case is that the bad sector map is somehow being bypassed in the "upgraded" arrangement.

We have two at home, for the count, by the way. Almost simultaneous.

How it is adressed I don't know, but only formatting the disk of the ipod worked for me. I also noticed that some music files were corrupted during whatever caused the problem, I had to delete them from the computer (saw the sync process stop at the same tracks every time). Luckily I could restore them from a backup.

I have the same problem, after the 9.2 update my iPod Classic 160 will not sync to iTunes, and it crashes iTunes everytime I connect... I have phoned Apple Tech Support, only to have them hang up on me when I repeatedly asked it they had a problem with the 9.2 update... NICE!!!! Thanks Apple!!! That really makes me feel good after spending thousands of pounds on Apple products over the years...

Has anybody had any success with getting there iPod Classic to sync/connect after the 9.2 update??? Any ideas are welcome??? Thanks

I was having the exact same problem. Someone in an earlier post mentioned to let the ipod stay connected to iTunes and run for a while. So that's what I did, connected my ipod classic 160 to iTunes 9.2, came back after a half hour, and the sync was complete and re-syncing with no delays.

GOOD NEWS... MY IPOD CLASSIC 160 JUST SYNC'D... IT TOOK NEARLY AN HOUR THOUGH... I SUPPOSE PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE... But I did have 143GB of music on it, so it's allowed to take a bit longer... I hope everybody has success with Syncing theirs now...

I'm not totally computer literate so I'm a bit stressed at the moment. After trying to sync my 160GB iPod Classic it caused iTunes to stop responding. I closed the program then disconnected the iPod. Re-opened iTunes then restored my iPod, clearing the whole lot. Then I uninstalled and re-installed iTunes. This has all been to no avail. When I connect my iPod it just causes iTunes to freeze, and now I can't get anything to sync to my iPod. HELP!

Just seen the message above my previous one, so I'll connect my iPod and leave it for a while. Fingers crossed....

Yes... the solution is PATIENCE... My iPod Classic 160GB took nearly an hour... so just plug yours in and leave it for ages... this seems to be working for most people... good luck

I posted another message topic thread about this, but I just want to add my name to the list of people having problems with the new Itunes. My computer was running Windows Vista and Itunes 9.0, but my Vista had problems and would crash when trying to download or update any program. I have my ipod classic 120gb and I never had a problem with itunes. I bought my boyfriend and new classic 160gb and tried to use it, but it wouldn't work without itunes 9.1 and I wasn't able to install it. Now a couple days ago I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 and downloaded itunes 9.2, both my ipods will sync and verify with no problem, (I have always used manual syncing cause I don't want to use up computer memory space by saving my cds on the computer.) My problem is now when I import cds into itunes and try to transfer them to the ipod it causes my computer to crash. I have found the only way to get songs onto the ipods is to do 2-3 songs at a time and just keep going until the computer blue screens and crashes again. Thankfully it disconnects my ipod with no problem when it does this, but it takes forever to transfer music onto it this way and I don't really like having it crash on me for fear it will mess up the Ipod. I'm about to stop transferring stuff until an update is out that will fix this so I don't destroy my Ipods. Is anyone else having music transfer issues or is it just me?

Just installed itunes 9.2 after having version 8 for ages. Plugged in my ipod classic 80g and first it optimized my pictures for some reason, then it synchronized. After only 3 minutes in total all done! No problems for me, yay!

I left my iPod 160GB to sync overnight, and thankfully it all worked out fine. Thanks for good advice!
