Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

Add me to the list of people fed up with this issue. A software update shouldn't corrupt our iPod's hard drives. Shame on Apple.

Tried all troubleshooting assistant suggestions - still nothing. I'm really pi$$ed off with apple's support. They have to show responsibility for severely screwing up our gadgets with iTunes9.

Same issue for me too. iTunes 9.2 crashes my 80G ipod classic. It updates count on computer, but won't update content on ipod. Also true with Nano.

I seemed to have solved this issue on my Mac running Snow Leopard. I'm not sure what made the difference but I think it was the iTunes update (to 9.2.1) plus checking off "enable disk use" (remember to click "Apply" as I forgot the first time). I also switched USB hubs. Now all is well. As an extra precaution I also ran Disk Utility, and DiskWarrior. Hope this helps others.

Same here. My 80GB Classic will not even be recognized by mt PC. I get a message saying "USB device not recognized" Fortunately it still works however. So I'm going to try and rollback to Itunes 8. Just downloaded 9.2.1.4 and nothing. It's really depressing that I can't update anything, and being out of warranty I'm screwed. Thanks Apple, this is the last POS that I will buy from you.

From my post to "Re: iTunes freezes when trying to sync iPod Classic"
"I am having the same problem with my iPod Classic 80g not syncing with iTunes 9.2. I tunes freezes up and after 5 or 10 minutes I get this message: Attempting to copy the disK "MICHAEL DAV" failed. An Unknown error accurred (-69). This happened everytime I tried to sync, even after I "Restored" my iPod. iTunes would not remove photos or synce Podcasts, before all of this started. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit OS. My iPhone and my wife's iPhone syncs just fine with iTunes 9.2. I don't understand, the previous version of iTunes worked just fine with my iPod and our iPhones. Now, I am getting a message that says my iPod cannot be synced, error (-1303)." I moved iTunes Media to my desktop and added everything back into iTunes as if it was for the first time, then tryed to sync my iPod. Guess, what?! Still would not sync. This makes the 2nd iPod this has happened to. The first one was under warrenty, the replacement (my 2nd iPod) isn't. If I have to replace it, I'll switch to a "Zune". To **** with Apple!

Yeah, I'm in the same boat- ipod classic 80 gb about 2 and half yrs old- have tried patience but it doesn't work no matter how long it's plugged in for. The ipod is recognised by the computer (but freezes if you try to access it) but itunes freezes as soon as the ipod is plugged in. I havent tried restoring it as i can't actually do anything. The ipod charges and works though so at least i can use whats on it. I've also tried sharepod, but it cant seem to see the ipod. my other ipod which is the same syncs fine (but the sound has mysteriously disappeared) but sharepod doesn't see it either. Am going round in circles!!!

Add my 80 gb Ipod Classic to the list. Even tried wiping it clean and restoring it. I thought it worked until I realized my Ipod could only hold ~220 songs, then it freezes and I receive error messages.

I've spent the last week trying every suggestion in this forum to no avail. I'm unbelievably frustrated at Apple and their willful disregard of this issue. I finally got 25GB of my 111GB music collection loaded again on my 160GB classic, but it crapped out again. When is a new version of Itunes 9 going to come out to fix this mess?!?!

I hate that this problem is so ugly that virtually every Ipod Classic owner is wishing they never had one. I am no exception for I am experiencing the same woes. Please forgive me if this part of the question has been answered before, but I need to know if I should throw more $ down the porcelain highway.

Now that Itunes corrupted my Ipod, (I am being generous with the term corrupted) my device will no longer work in any computer. How in the world am I supposed to charge it again? Will a car charger or external wall device charge it?

    This worked for me:

Put the iPod into Disk Mode.

Under Applications:Utilities:Disk Utility:First Aid, click "Repair Disk" (with the iPod as the disk drive selected). Most likely the system will say there is nothing wrong with the iPod. Then click "Erase". This will clean everything off of the iPod. Then eject the iPod from the desk top and unplug the iPod. Open iTunes and plug the iPod back into the USB cable. With the iPod selected in iTunes, click "Restore". This should give you a clean slate until iTunes 9 screws up your iPod again in which case you will have to repeat this process. So don't put anything on your iPod that you cannot bear to lose.

Don't throw your iPod at your wall.

I don't believe iTunes 9 is actually destroying the disk drives...more along the lines of iTunes 9 tricking itself into thinking files are corrupt. I am very rough on my iPod 160 (I poured beer on it once) and it still works fine.

The key, as Andrew Ewald's post explains, is to start from a clean slate. Here is the address for putting your iPod into Disk Mode.

Glad that I'm not the only one, sad that there is no fix.

I have an 80 GB iPod Classic. I hadn't put anything on it in a while, but when I went to do it today with the newest version of iTunes, it became "corrupted". I am going to call Apple tomorrow, although I see that that hasn't helped really anyone. I (like most of you) am just really upset that Apple would let this type of thing happen with their software. Very disappointing.
