Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

Ive posted a few different comments in this thread, suffice it to say, nothing has worked. Really apple, why can't you be different? All big companies act this same way, where if they make a mistake they deny it to save themselves. I thought Steve Jobs was a better guy then this, but i think apple wont ever admit they destroied this many ipods. I have thought about replacing my now paperweight that used to be an ipod with a zune, but i figure microsoft will just be the same way. i really would like an apple representative that is reading this to respond, but knowing my big companies they probs wont. I have to think that some apple worker has to be reading this. with something like 6,000 hits someone has to be taking notice, i hope.

Welcome to the club. Since I've downloaded iTunes 9 I haven't been able to import any C.D.'s. All I get is 'The disk is locked and cannot be written to.' Yet, C.D.'s are able to play in Windows Media Player. I spoke to someone from Apple Tech Support and they had no idea what I was talking about. I'm really not happy now but at this point the best thing that could have happened is that the year is coming up so I have time to get this problem fixed under warranty. If anyone has any ideas how to rectify this problem please let me know.

I am with the same story. Updated itunes 9.0 and now my 80 GB Classic ipod is simply out of work. Shouldn't apple take responsibility to fix the bug or is it a deliberate attempt to corrupt the old ipods and make people buy new ones ? Should the people who trusted apple be duped this way?

I also have a similar problem with my 120GB Classic. It's only 3 months old and since I downloaded iTunes 9 it won't sync. When I watch the iPod itself it connects, syncs for about a minute then tells me it is disconnecting and ready to eject. There doesn't seem to be a problem with the iPod hard drive itself (yet) but it's just bloody infuriating that Apple have released this software without testing it properly and totally ignoring the fact that a huge number of their users are left with a duff iPod! They're almost taking a page out of Microsofts book and releasing glitch-filled software and waiting for the masses to find the faults....although Apple don't seem aware anything is wrong. They must know, but why on earth are they ignoring the problem and their users.

The iTunes 9 problem I can deal with for now seeing as most of my music is still on my iPod, but no response from Apple is downright disgusting. If they just released a statement saying that they are aware of the problem and are working on it, it would calm alot of folk down. Is that too much to ask?

Btw, I downloaded iTunes 8 and it still won't sync..

I totally agree. All apple would have to say is that they are working on fixing the problem. and the most infuriating part of this is that this is apple's support page. They are listening to us, but they refuse to respond.

Apple company ***** they make people buy products and then they dont take care of it i have bough an ipod classic 160 gb a couple of years ago but till date there has been no update after 1.1.2 and when they are again back with the ipod classic 160gb they made and update of 2.0.3 and what will happen to the people who bought the ipod classic 120 gb and the the people who bought early the 160gb goes up for a toss its just rips off peoples money not worth the money to invest in apple support is bad really poor they should think of the support for the customers to keep them satisfied and may be market will automatically increase for them too bad .

Well, guys...this really isn't going to help...but at the conclusion of my call with Apple Support (way back on page 2), they decided to let me slide since I was so close to the expired warranty date (and they probably realized that they were the reason it was now bricked and not letting me restore).

About 3-4 days after I sent it to them, they sent it back with a brand new back and able to be restored and actually play music!

I didn't post a follow-up since this is a big 'ol YMMV. My advice? Give 'em a call and be polite.

I'm going to talk to Appl-ians in a shop here in Rome and see what they know about the iPOD problem. After which, I'll comb the Apple pages (contracts, instruction books, etc.) to see if there is actually a snail mail address where I can write them a POLITE letter about these problems and .. in case you don't know it, about some radio streaming stations that became unreachable after Snow Leopard's advent (maybe that's just as well, if I can't use my iPOD(!)to the full, anyway).

Is Apple paying any heed to all all our whines or should I say cries ? Will it be really unprofessional for them to admit the mistake and try to fix the mess if possible ?

Before setting off with POD and MAC, I went back to the support page: I went through the basic routine the suggest (wiggling the hold button, holding center and to buttons down to reset, etc. The POD now seems to receive the broadcasts I want, but seems not to want to sync in the playlist categories I had set up in iTunes. Apple suggests that those basic measures (see Support, click on the model in question, then navigate to the what to do before anything else to fix the POD section.

I upgraded to iTunes 9 a few days ago and could not sync my Ipod 160 gb classic any longer. I called Apple and they told me to go to Add/Remove Programs - uninstall Quicktime, Itunes, Apple Update Software, and the Apple Mobile something or other...(can't remember the name -have it at home). They said to restart the computer after this and go to Apple website and download the older 8 version of iTunes. I did that. I asked if all my playlists would still be saved and they said yes..Well, I did all that and nothing was saved. It still would not sync my Ipod even though it "looked" like it was syncing until I got an error message. I disconnected my Ipod with the fear that everything would now be gone, but it hadn't changed. SOOOO.... I actually wrote down all my playlists, etc., went back to the internet and searched. Found a guy who said he put his Ipod Classic into disk mode. (Hold down the Menu and Center button until the apple appears. The press the middle button down again - a check mark will appear)OK then he said to have Itunes open and connect the Ipod, which I did. It took a couple or so hours and still received a couple of error message boxes along the way (which I closed and let the computer continue). All the while I am thinking, "It's loading everything - I can see at the top it's getting the files, but will it stop at the end????")Well, it did work. I'm still not sure what is going to happen when I try to sync next time. I may try it first without putting in into disk mode. I am calling Apple back again today.

I went to the local Apple service point today. The man behind the counter plugged in the iPod, was able to put a few songs on, but noticed that whatever program they use on their Mac on the counter could not see the hard drive. So it is the hard drive he said. And so much bad luck for me, it is out of warranty for 2 weeks.
Back home I plugged the iPod back in (my Windows computer) in usb mass storage mode. Did a harddisk integrety test (standard procedure in Windows) and the disk showed no errors at all.
So there you are, a loyal customer, having bought already 5 iPods and at least convinced 5 others to buy one - out in the cold. "Bad luck, really too bad that it is out of warranty, and just those 2 weeks".
I can't imagine doing anything wrong with the iPod, I keep my computer clean and maintained... One feels so powerless when the big company says 'huh, dunno, your problem'.
