iTunes Media Folder

I installed itunes 9, and under Library > Organiza Library it gives me the chance to "Upgrade to Itunes media Organization"...

The iTunes 9 help menu states this:
If you haven’t yet upgraded your iTunes Music folder, you can do so now by selecting “Convert to iTunes Media folder.”

This renames the iTunes Music folder to iTunes Media, and places all your iTunes library files in the appropriate subfolders (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, and so on).

I tried that, but my folder name is still "itunes music"
Is this the correct behavior?
Should i rename it to iTunes media or it is supposed to happen automatically?

Thank you for your help
Paolo

Just a further update, I took a closer look at my iTunes Music folder and found that it had actually been reorganised.

The reason it hadn't appeared to work for me was that there were still a lot of artist folders in there. I checked a few of them and it turns out these were all tracks that I'd removed from iTunes but not from disk, so iTunes was doing the right thing after all, and now that I've cleared out the debris I have just seven folders:

Automatically Add to iTunes <- if you drop a file in here, it's added to iTunes and moved to the appropriate folder. Could be handy for Automator actions... somehow...
Downloads
Mobile Applications
Movies
Music
Ringtones
TV Shows

One other caveat: since all of these files move location, if you're using Time Machine (or another non-mirror backup method) and include this folder in your backups, it'll have to back your whole library up again since the files are in a new location.

HTH, and cheers,

Paul.

I've also had a closer look at my iTunes Music folder. Turns out I was wrong - iTunes has actually reorganised my media. Within my iTunes Music folder, I have folders for Music, Audiobooks, TV Shows, etc. That's what I wanted to happen.

Here's the problem: it left behind the original artist folders in the 'iTunes Music' folder! These folders do not contain music, but they do contain album folders and album art. I've since deleted them, and iTunes is still functioning normally.

Basically, I had two copies of the folders for every artist in my music library. The folders stored in 'iTunes Music' contained nothing but album art, and the folders in 'iTunes Music/Music' contained the actual music. What a flapping mess.

upgraded to itunes 9 (tunes housed on an external hard drive connected to my laptop). I have approx 70 artists files that remain under "itunes Music" rather than inside the "Music" subfolder that was created with the upgrade. The artists folders hold various songs that should have moved to the new "music" folder under the new folder structure. Do i need to move all those over manually? Anyone know why some artists remain in the original file structure? For example..i have "coldplay" "viva la vida" songs 4,5, 10 under "itunes music" old file structure and under the new "music" subfolder it list "coldplay" "viva lavida" songs 1-3, 6-9. Baffled why they didn't all move and how i can consolidate completely to the new file structure simply.

I also have both the iTunes media folder and the iTunes Music folder. The latter still contains mp3s for my music. The former contains Audiobooks, Applications, Music, Podcasts, etc. I noticed that in the music folder, each song is present with two copies. For instance, Songname.mp3 and Songname 1.mp3. The one with the number suffix also has the albumcover as the icon.

So now I have three copies of each song on my Mac, is this correct? I'm using iTunes 9.0.2 (Mac).

Thanks that makes sense, I had some crashes with iTunes and reimported my music, so that explains the duplicates. iTunes now works again, so I'll probably move everything to my Desktop and re-import it again. I suspect I'll only have one set of songs then, and can delete the ones on the Desktop.
