Well I can categorically state as i have in previous posts that as soon as I turn off PUSH for both my gmail and work exchange accounts - the battery issue goes away. The drain with PUSH on is far worse than before the 3.1 update - I can live without PUSH in favour of longer battery life - but why should we have to trade off one of the iPhone's flagship features to the extent where to have it means the battery dying without even using the phone - in my case it was lasting three hours maximum. This silence from Apple is once again becoming sinister. And I have been an apple user and enthusiast for over 16 years.

    Not proven?!

Come on... Want to see my power logs?

I am having the exact same problem after I updated to 3.1 Saturday. I work for an AT&T corp store and I go to work at 9am and by the time I get off and get home around 6:30pm my battery is at only 30%. I hope Apple is aware of the problem and come up with some type of solution.

Maybe the battery life is so bad because the processer is so big. What is it 600 MHZ? ****, that's twice the size as my second Gateway PC I bought back in 1997. I must say the speed on the 3GS is unbelievable.

"This is WORSE than when I had my original almost dead battery in it :P "

You should only use genuine Apple brand batteries! The battery on an iPhone is NOT a user replaceable part. You are NOT a Genius.

That sounds like the people in France who tried to tell Apple that their iPhone just EXPLODED with no warning. In every single instance, it was physical damage.

You will not be able to get anything past the people at Apple. They are geniuses and you are not.

You see... You're not well informed Sir.

    1) The problem with iPhones exploding is still being investigated and Apple has not provided any official response to EU other than informing the commissioner about investigating the matter. I do tend to believe the problem had to do with unsupported casing, modding, jailbreaking and so on, but so far Apple has not provided EU with any official results of its investigation.

    2) The battery problem – widely described and discussed in this thread - has been reported by citizens of different countries and cultures, including US of A (in fact the majority of posters seem to be American). Perhaps these are French agents undercover trying to undermine Apple's credibility, but I doubt it could reasonably be the case.

    3) My personal experience with 3 (three) iPhones exchanged by AppleCare based on Power Logs and other information means that either the battery problem is real and proven or I'm a more genius in faking it than Apple's geniuses are in discovering me. Given I'm not faking, I suppose this has got nothing to do with being geniuses or not (and I do bare a lot of respect for Apple's engineers, technicians, customer support and other professionals working for the Company) but with the fact that there is a power/battery problem that all of us hope is solved ASAP.

    4) Given you're one of the lucky majority that has no power issues whatsoever, I think it'd be a rather good idea for you to spend your time using your brilliant iPhone instead of hanging around threads full of people having battery issues (or French undercover agents undermining Apple's credibility – whatever fits you better). If I were you I'd certainly prefer enjoying life and hopefully, once this problem is solved, I'd be able to stop paying regular visits to this thread and go on with my life.

    Thank you for understanding.

Chalk me up with having issues with my battery as well.

chalk me up to sucky battery life on the iphone 3gs. brand new phone only about a week old and in the last 10-15 minutes alone my battery went fron 75% now down 70% and all i have been doing is text messaging on it occasionally. i have wifi, bluetooth, location services, auto brightness, notifications, data roaming, vpn all off. the only thing running is my push email to my exchange server and 3g, i have not received or placed any phone calls nor has any new email come in during this time.

i have purchased these products both to help ease the lack of battery life on the iphone. both of which stated they were compatible with the iphone:

    2-in-1 wall charger

    portable charger

is there any issue using these products with the iphone? i tried a charger from the ATT store designed specifically for the iphone and plugged it in and it told me this accessory is not supported and would not charge the phone go figure... thats why i have the two accessorys above.

Also having battery problems! Yay for having to wait for over a month to get the phone in the first place..then have to experience your newly aquired phone ******* away the battery in a matter of hours. Hooray for testing the updates before pushing them on millions of users, and taking away the option to revert to a earlier(WORKING) version -.-

Just wanted to say i was having the same battery problem, i just bought my phone 2 weeks ago and did the upgrade the same day i set it up. i don't use the Push feature at all, i have wifi disabled, bluetooth disabled, location disabled, and i make only a few calls a day. i only had a few apps installed. i watched my battery drain 40% in about 2-3 hours on sunday, all i was doing was occassionally checking scores. i went to ATT last night and exchanged my phone for a new one which already had the upgrade installed and so far the battery has been great.
when i got home last night i fully charged it then unplugged it at 8:00 pm well its currently 3:00pm and i'm down to 85% which i would consider normal. i've only used it briefly today so i'm sure thats why it's still good but when i got up it was still at 100% which is alot better than what i was getting.

Sounds exactly like my stats. Really. 8:39AM 100%, 11:50AM it was 80%...;)

Which 3GS have you got? Model number?

This 3.1 update provides terrible battery life for me as well! Just a simple check for email can drop my battery down 3-4 percentage points. I never had to adjust settings to keep my battery performance up before 3.1 and even when I do adjust them now after the udpate it does NOT help. I used to last an entire 12 hour work day without having to recharge the battery while listening to music, checking out facebook and playing bejeweled. Not anymore though! I've sent a total of 8 texts today and checked email 2 times, I'm now at 79% battery life ...

    1. The only difference between the 'Genius' guys is they are currently working for Apple and I am not. That's it.

    2. Not user replaceable? Sure it is. With the right tools and the correct Apple branded battery. It's a simple job. And it worked perfectly until Apple mucked up the phones with 3.1.

    3. I'm not an Apple Store Genius, no. But lets talk about the smarty-pants Apple Genius's. Those guys are so ""smart"" they broke my Quad G5. TWICE. One guy broke my Processor, the other broke the Logic Board. So Apple had to give me a brand new Quad Intel system. The so called Genius techs? Not so much Genius. You can slap a tag on 'em that says so, but that doesn't make it true.
