Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

I am happy to say that mine is also working well after the update.... the only hiccup I've had is that the mail seems to get bogged down sometimes and the text message function seems to get hinky when I roll back and forth between messages. I know this would infuriate others but given what I was going through with the coma's,shutdowns and restarts it feels great .... once it continues I'm sure I wont be as sympathetic.

Hi Folks,

Just to clarify my experience.

(My understanding of coma mode) My phone looks like it's asleep (blank screen) but pressing home or the power switch won't wake it up. (even holding power does nothing) - it's exactly like the phone has run out of power, but I don't believe that is the case.

Connecting a power cable cause the phone to "wake up", then even though it looks like it's got a GSM/3G connection it isn't actually connected to my telco (I can't make or receive calls, send or receive text messages or get a data connection (for email or browsing for example). (This sounds like what you encountered Arminio) I have to re-boot the phone (holding power, then sliding the red slider etc).

PS I've read else where about rouge threads being at the bottom of all this. This kind of makes sense, certainly with 3.1.1 the phone heated up a lot when this happened (I've no idea if this still is part of the problem in 3.1.2 because I was asleep the only time it happened).

Now (really grasping here, but) if when the phone gets hot Bad Stuff Happens (TM) and the battery metering gets upset and thinks the phone is almost of charge and goes into power save mode* - but becuase of some part of what's gone on upto this point it doesn't do it propery so that a) the "plug me in" graphic isn't displayed when you press the home or power switches and b) the phone doesn't sign-off the GSM network properly then perhaps this would explain it. But I really am guessing and it doesn't help me any, because the rough thread or whatever triggers this is way outside my control.....

Just following up with 3.1.2 experience... I had a freeze every day or two with 3.1, I upgraded the day 3.1.2 came out, and have not had a freeze, yet. The phone still exhibits a sluggish response, and the battery drains even faster than with 3.1. I barely make it through a day on a charge, this was not the case under 3.1, and under 2.x I would get roughly 2 days per charge.

One further note - I have push notifications off (they've been that way since a day or two after I applied the first update which added them (3.1?)). I had battery life issues with them on long before I encountered the coma mode issue!

@Kalir - if you're having battery life problems with 3.1.x I would suggest that you turn off push notifcations. They seemed drop my battery life by 10-15%.

You are following the right steps ...under 5 Minutes I have another option that reads "Never" and just for the record I have Push Notifications "On" Since I have it set to Never the screen stays on till I manually shut it down which ends up being next to never as I forget to do so unless I'm putting it in my pocket etc

I don't have that option - just in case, I enabled push notifications and tried that setting again, still no "Never" option!

Any chance this is somehow connected to my operator (or regional settings) - I know regulatory differences effect somethings like Max Volume in Europe??

Oh well I guess I'll just have to sit out and hope 3.1.3 sorts things out whenever it arrives!

Count me in for coma mode on 3.1.2.

I had the issue on 3.1 since first moment after upgrade. Then a short period of relief after 3.1.2 update, then coma mode AGAIN.

As many of you, I agree that this reduces A LOT my loyalty to Apple. I caught myself staring at my wife's Sony Ericsson dumb phone imagining "Wouldn't be great to unlock my phone and use it immediately instead of waiting 20 seconds for it to wake up?".

This is unacceptable. Apple, please fix this problem.
