Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Hammer3: how helpful were they, why don't you post what they told you so the 21 pages of people with problems might give it a try? THAT would be helpful.

Hi guys. Add me to the list of frustrated and annoyed users. I just bought an iPhone from AT&T on Saturday 9/19, the black 3G 8GB version. Brought it home and immediately hooked it up to iTunes and upgraded to 3.1. I've been experiencing the random shutdown/freeze/whatever you want to call it from about an hour afterwards. I can't find any consistency to the phenomenon yet... twice, after I found out it was on blank screen mode and wouldn't respond to the power button, I waited a few minutes and tried again...the screen flashed on and off a few times and finally responded. Two other times, it froze and I had to hard-reset it (hold down Home button and Power button until the Apple logo appeared). I'm pretty disappointed to say the least. I tried plugging it into USB, into a car charger, wall charger... no change in responsiveness. I tried calling myself and it rang like the phone was ON, but the phone itself did not make a sound. I'm not looking for some kind of reparations or something; however, a new software release would be pretty nice, or some explanation of the problem...

I'm having the same issues in regards to having a dead, unresponsive phone for no apparent reason, requiring a restore to regain functionality. I have also experienced extremely poor battery life. When I found my phone almost dead this morning after charging it last night, I left it charging in my truck for the rest of the day. When I came out of work at the end of the day it had actually lost power even though it was on charge! It has been unusually warm to the touch as well indicating there are a number of processes running even when it's in standby.

Same problems here. Random shutdowns and battery randomly draining quickly. I was using 3.1 for about a week and it just started happening 3 days ago. Got 1 shutdown and had to do a hard reset. Everything was fine again untill today, when I got 2 shutdowns and, having used my phone for probably 15 minutes during the day (was about 80% charged), I realized I had a low battery alert, and it looked like it was under 10%. I sent a message (and a link to this thread...which is becoming monstrous)

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I really hope this gets fixed in the next update, and fixed fast, as my phone seems to be going downhill. Please Apple, acknowledge this is a problem and get to work on it.

CDN TMINI : go to the CNet link I just posted a few messages ago and be sure to register with Apple's bug reports, that link is also mentioned within the last few pages of posts here on this thread...

I'm submitting my problem to this forum/thread and to the Apple iPhone Feedback page as well. Not sure what it'll help do, but maybe increasing the thread will help get some much needed attention.

I'm experiencing the same problems listed here, same as everyone else...I updated my iPhone 3G 16gb to the new 3.1 update a week ago, and since then my iPhone will go into "coma" mode during random parts of the day, requiring a hard reset to restart. This is most irritating as I use my iPhone for work and have missed many important calls/emails. Also, I'll usually go to bed with my phone fully charged as I use it for an alarm clock, and lo and behold, I've been late to work twice due to the phone magically losing all it's battery charge overnight. Petty, I know, but had to throw being late to work in there. But constantly charging my phone has become very tiresome nonetheless.

I'm very disappointed in Apple that they obviously didn't properly test this software before releasing it to the public. I would think nothing of it if the software glitch caused a minor inconvenience or two, but this is major. I would think some type of reimbursement is in order, especially for those of us who have lost valuable time and money that we won't be able to recoup otherwise.

So, restore out faith Apple, do right by your consumers, please fix this problem and issue us some type of iTunes credit or something to make up for this huge inconvenience.

Because of all these problems with 3.1, the illusion of Apple 'taking care of you' is now over. Therefore, since we're now back to reality, let's start with 2 things that users need since it seems people need to take matters into their own hands since Apple doesn't respond:

    1. The ability to roll back updates
    2. The ability to change your own battery.

Get these into the next iPhone.

There sure seems to be quite a stink brewing about the number of posts/views in this and similar threads, as if it's a *major, widespread* problem. But hasn't anyone noticed the alarmingly high number of posters with only ONE post? And isn't it also odd that an alarmingly high number of those single post comments seem to be alarmingly similar? Seems a bit fishy if you ask me...

ggarthe, i'm a first time poster mostly because I've never had ANY problems with any of my ipods, iphones, or macs that I've previously owned from Apple. This is the first time I have encountered a problem that is 100% Apple's fault. The only other problem I have had was when I dropped my original iphone and the screen cracked, but obviously that was my fault. Before this 3.1 update, my iPhone was working fine and my attitude towards Apple's customer service was excellent but both have gone downhill since I updated my iPhone the day 3.1 went live. THAT is why I'm posting here.

ggarthe wow, that's some line of reasoning you have there.

This is the worst Apple related problem I've ever had. I seem to get the random shut down 2 or 3 times a day, I'm missing work calls. Fix This.

I did my first posts on this thread way back in the low page numbers after my second coma but im happy to say that ever since coming on here to add my weight to the fact that 3.1 had messed my phone up the problems just dont exsist anymore.

after the second time was alwaysa checking my phone was still on...now over a week later I dont give the whole 3.1 deabte a second thought so much so Im now un-subscribing from what has now become a very boring thread with the same old moans and groans. gone for ever lol well until the next ** up

USE FEEDBACK.....SOME ON HERE KEEP TELLING YOU THAT!!!

Add one more to the list of 3G users experiencing random comas...I've already tried restoring twice, once from a backup and once as a new phone...nothing has worked, and this was a phone that worked flawlessly with 3.0. I actually went to the Apple Store today to see if they could tell me anything useful. The Genius I spoke to listened to what I had to say and told me she hasn't heard anything about this issue yet...as the two other people on either side of me at the bar were in the middle of explaining the EXACT SAME ISSUE to their respective Geniuses. She then told me that in order to keep enough memory free on the phone I should be powering it off and on at least once a day. She helpfully demonstrated this technique for me - and the phone randomly shut down again ten minutes later as I walked out of the store. Please. I understand it takes some time to isolate a problem and figure out how to fix it, but this kind of denial of what is obviously a widespread issue is absurd. It's been a week - I need my phone to work.
