Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Downgrade to 3.0.1 people!!!! don't stop complaining but if you want to have some peace of mind until Apple fixes this, just downgrade. i did it 2 days ago and the comas instantly went away.

here's the link that walks you trough it, courtesy to Mr Big J.

you need to have a windows pc or a windows emulator on Mac. it's really easy.

a note: the 3.0.1 ipsw link given in the video is not corrupt but will give you an error message that it is incompatible when restoring with it. what i did was just download from another link. google it.

    This problem isn't going away.
I did try one of the suggestions that was simple to do and that had no affect because I've just had my 10th total shut down following the 3.1 update and trying their suggestion. I tried turning off the Fraud Warning in Safari as someone said. I couldn't see how this could work because it's never been running when the phone has shut down but I thought I'd try it anyway because the number of missed calls is increasing.

Of course these times that I put below are just when I discovered that the phone had shut down. I don't know how long before these times I was in fact without a working phone!.

I don't think this is something that the end users can fix.

Times & dates my iPhone has frozen after the 3.1 update
    10. 5:34 pm Monday the 21st sept
    9. 8:14pm Saturday the 19th Sept
    8. 10:16am Saturday the 19th Sept
    7. 8:06pm Thursday the 17th sept
    6. 6:35pm Thursday the 17th Sept
    5. 7:00pm Wednesday the 16th Sept
    4. 7:25am Wednesday the 16th Sept
    3. Didn't make a note but decided to visit the user forums to see if anyone else was affected, There were lots of people.
    2. Didn't make a note but noticed it had happened for the second time.
    1. Didn't make a note other than to note it happened because it was unusual.

My iPhone 3G has shut down also mysteriously. Today I didn't get any phone calls even people tried to call me. I noticed that there was something wrong, when I tried to switch off 3G, but the 3G sign in upper corner didn't go away. I put wifi on, and then I got the Edge-sign to the corner. I also seemed to have much less battery power than the idicator showed when there was the 3G sign. This 3.1 update is pure disaster. I'd like to go back to 3.0 as soon as possible, but I guess it's not possible.

I'm a mac-user and I used this guide: http://spicycauldron.com/2009/09/14/how-to-rollback-iphone-software-3-1-to-3-0-1 / I admit it was a bit complicated, my roommate (who's a programmer) had to help with step seven, but in the end it worked.

The phone was back to its good ol' self after the process, but when I turned the it off and on again a little later, it got stuck in recovery mode. I followed these instructions to fix it: http://ipitg.net/how-to-kick-iphone-out-of-recovery-mode-mac/

All new updates are destroying our iPhones...

    Dont update your phone.......

maybe APPLE doesn't pay their programmers and they are trying to destroy the company, also our phones...

I am afraid about my iMac :S I will never update anything from Apple...

my WiFi doesnt work about 3 months, from the date that I updated my 3.0 version.. :S

the link that i posted is a bit usable because it leads you through the process step by step. and the whole thing is exactly about bringing the phone out of the recovery loop. fixes error "1015"

I have been suffering a lot from this, multiple coma lock-ups per day

The most annoying was this morning when my phone decided to go into a coma when the alarm was supposed to go off. The alarm went off 16 minutes late

Thanks Apple, as well as making my phone annoying as **** you have made me late for work too.

    Marvelous.

In response to ggarthe's question about the order of iTunes and iPhone 3.1 updates: I'm having comas still (not decreasing in frequency-if anything, increasing as I try additional "fixes"), but I only updated the iPhone OS, and never updated iTunes - I'm still on 8.2.1. If the problematic order was updating to OS 3.1 from iTunes 8, that could make sense, but I can conclusively say that updating to OS 3.1 before updating iTunes wasn't universally problem-free!

My bugs since updating to the most recent OS:

Problem 1: My phone loves to stop contacting the network.
eg 1: I'll get a text message, and when I try to reply the little "Sending" status bar never completes and the message is never sent. Solution: Hard reset.
eg 2: I'll try to dial someone and it'll never connect to the network, just stays silent the whole time and the person I dialed does not receive a call. Solution: Hard reset.

Problem 2: Upon waking my phone from sleep, it think I'm in a dark room and turns itself down to an extremely low brightness level (happens roughly 40% of the time). Solution: put it back to sleep and reawaken it, or just deal with it.

Problem 3: General slowdown of different OS interactions. Keyboard seems slow especially. Opening some apps (even Apple apps like Safari or Maps) sometimes seems to take longer than normal. Solution: ::Shrug::

I was very pleased to come across this thread.

The previous poster (mpmartin0) has precisely set out just the issues I am having, so I won't repeat them, but I will be writing to Apple about the fitness for purpose of their latest iteration of software.
