Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Add me to the list of 3.1 victims. This is the worst of iphone software updates I've experienced. Since 3GS came out, and with the software updates for that, my 3G has slowed way down. Now this frequent shut down is just too ridiculous! Shame on Apple.

Apple, this silent treatment is ridiculous. I have no land line. Just my iPhone 3G. I have been awake for four hours today and my phone has had two "Comas" already. The phone experiences this 3 to 5 times a day. I have posted to your support line. This is my third post to this discussion. I qualify for an iPhone 3GS at subsidized pricing but I am losing interest in your phone because of your silent treatment on this issue. My phone is mission critical to my life. I adopted this phone with the first generation device and I have been happy overall until now...yes there have been issues and glitches, but never anything that actually made the phone functionality unreliable. This issue makes the phone unreliable. If this silent treatment is how you intend to treat your customers regarding an issue that actually makes the phone functionality unreliable than maybe you should not be in the phone business. It is really getting unlikely that my next phone will be an iPhone.

I agree that the best solution is to downgrade. I have a macbook pro running osx snow leopard and it was more challenging than the windows method. It took a few different tries using some entries in terminal after install iRecovery, but finally seemed to work. Just a warning, even after getting the downgrade to go through the phone will need some more code entered in terminal in order to stop it from going to recovery mode when you turn it off and back on. Check this link for help.

Same problem. Phone just goes dead since 3.1. Nothing to add that hasn't been said for 70+ pages.

Apple not addressing this is ridiculous.

    "It just works" right...?

The reason there are so many 1st time posters is because most (like me) have never really had a REASON to post. I go all the way back to the Apple IIe and have owned too many Macs & iPods to count and I've never seen anything like this. Incidentally, I have a 3GS with 3.1 and it works fine. My wife has a 3G with 3.1 and it has most of the problems described here. However, two coworkers also have the 3G model with 3.1 and have reported no problems. I guess that's why this is so frustrating, because there is no clear-cut or obvious reason why some have the problem and others don't seem to.

My previous post was meant for ggarthe, and his logic that there was some kind of conspiracy associated with all the 1-time posters.

Apple needs to watch their own commercials, because I can't find a human at Apple that cares about this problem.

What is wrong with this 3.1 update. Battery life *****, my phone randomly crashes. I never had any problems either before the update. Come on Apple, get it together!

Boy this is really ruining Apple's reputation.... I wonder how many customers they have lost over this major screw up.

Count me as another who will never buy an Apple product again.

My wife has a 3G and was having this issue. I turned off the fraud warning. I think the key is to reboot the phone afterwards. I didn't and she still had the issue and after rebooting to get it back, the phone has been fine for 3 days.

Apple has said this for the fraud warning:

"Safari's anti-phishing database is downloaded while the user charges their phone in order to protect battery life and ensure there aren't any additional data fees," Apple spokesman, Bill Evans, told The Loop. "After updating to iPhone OS 3.1 the user should launch Safari, connect to a Wi-Fi network and charge their iPhone with the screen off. For most users this process should happen automatically when they charge their phone."

You wonder during this process it gets locked up??

I followed this process yesterday, opening Safari on wifi and then putting it into standby while it was plugged in and I haven't had any lockups since. Very odd if this is the fix but whatever works.

    @cduff33

i'm with you on this. the worst is that there's been no response from apple, not even an acknowledgement of the issue. this happened before when i had a macbook pro, luckily i sold it. i can now officially say that once i can get out of this contract i'm leaving for greener pastures. blackberry or android here i come
