Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

One more with the same misfortune... The funny thing though is that I had only one "coma" episode. I cannot reproduce the problem. Has anyone been able to find a situation where the problem always occur?

No kidding...I cannot even trust my phone to receive incoming calls right now. Its not like we are talking about an app not working or something.. its the PHONE!!!!!

Apple's silence on this issue has shown us all here on this thread just how much they really care about their customers.

After upgrading to 3.1 I have had problems connecting to the cell network. My iPhone will show full signal but when I try to send a text message or make a call it won't go through. Only after resetting the phone will I receive any text messages, voice mails, etc.

I also started having the random shut down after updating to 3.1...but I did the network reset as suggested by some other users; and I turned the Fraud Warning OFF (Settings > Safari > Security)...reboot. My phone has been stable since last Thursday under 3.1. I hope it helps some of you.

MultiSync, what is the process of doing a restore? I tried to go into itunes and clicked on the restore button to restore from the backup that was made before this stupid update. It said was going to put it back to factory settings.

How do I get it to restore from the last back up.

    Thanks,
    Scott

I had lock ups with my iphone 3g, but I don't anymore. I noticed they seemed to happen after I had received an email. I would hear the iphone alert that I had a new email, I grabbed the phone, hit the button, and blank screen like it was dead. I would hold down power button and the home buttons until it reset and the phone would work until I received another email and I would try to check the email.

What I noticed is that after I reset the iphone, I would see a message saying incorrect password for a 2nd email account that I had set up but I had deactivated. Since I wasn't using that account, I didn't bother typing a password for it, but then I would receive an email for the other account and the phone would lock up again. On a hunch, I deleted the inactive email account, then sent myself an email to the remaining account set up on my iphone, checked the phone, and no lock up. I then re-added the email account, set the password, set it to inactive, sent myself an email to the account that is active on the iphone, and no lock up. I haven't had a lock up since.

+1 happening to me as well. I can't believe apple hasn't done something about this yet. How apple has said nothing about these major issues in unbelievable. I rely on my iPhone as my sole source of being contacted. I no longer have a land line and to have my phone repeatedly die or go into a coma completely randomly and the other issues with 3.1 is completely unacceptable. Please release a fix ASAP or at least let us downgrade to 3.0.

I have been experiecing the same random shutdowns as many of you since i updated to 3.1 on my 3G. A total of about six times this has happened in the past two weeks (sometimes multiple times per day), and each time I "fixed" it with a hard reset. Today however my 3G went into a coma and I am not able to hard reset. It is completely unresponsive. The battery was fully charged this morning, so I find it very improbable that it is a power issue. I have also tried connecting it to a charger with no response as well. This happens mainly when I am at work and need to use my phone and wifi, safari, etc. I have not been able to try connecting to my home computer yet, but I'm doubtful that will help with anything anyway.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone else experience a complete 'brick' shutdown?
This seems to be a major problem for a lot of iPhone users. Hey Apple what's the deal! Please acknowledge and fix this problem fast!

like many here I began experiencing issues with my 3G following the 3.1 update. I actually believe there have been issues following the 3.0 in regard to the ability to manage 3G data connections but that is a whole other story.

So the lock ups occurred daily. Sometimes 1 or 2 and other days 5-6. Frustrating to say the least because while the phone is locked up....no incoming calls ring through!! Imagine having your 3G on a long drive home after a client meeting and not being able to take the call when they immediately want to place an order!!!! Then not knowing about the problem until you get home and say "my that was a quiet ride home".

So I had it...called for support....they seem to KNOW something is not well with 3.1 but would not openly state anything. So...today is the first day I have yet to have the 3G lock up since the 3.1 update.

I backed up my phone info which was important to me then did a restore with one big difference from the last attempt a week ago....I selected set up as NEW PHONE.

Wiped her clean...along with a fresh 3.1 install....not upgrade. At least that is my hunch.

So far so good. I installed a few apps....did not introduce anything from itunes yet...kept it simple with only active synch to my exch server.

My hunch is something is up with the UPGRADE process. If my phone continues to work after being restored as new....and my hunch is that means a fresh 3.1 load...then perhaps the problem is with the upgrade process??

Will update if and when the 3G freaks out again.

BTW...that battery issue...when my 3G was locked up yesterday...after being used for only a few minutes during the day....I restarted...and it powered up with a battery of less then 20%.

Apple tech has asked me for trace logs if the problem re-occurs....

    Cheers and good luck!!

It is getting a joke how many times I have to reset the phone on a daily basis.

The only possible reason I can think why Apple won't acknowledge the problem is maybe if they admit that the phone is almost unusable they may be breaking their contract with you (or at least your providers contract).

I haven't read through the fine print of my mobile contract on O2 but surely if a phone becomes unusable as a result of the manufacturer or the provider then you should be entitled to break your contract?

I dunno it's just an theory. Anything to try and rationalise the silence. Come on apple hurry up! Or at least give customers a hassle free way to downgrade.

last night i restored my phone as new phone and i'm having the exact same problems i was having before. Today, my phone has "went into a coma" 4 times since 5 AM.

Also, I just finished turning the Fraud Warning OFF so I will update later tonight and let you guys know if that fixed the problem. It will be weird if this indeed fixes my phone. I have noticed the coma occurs most often while leaving an app open and going into sleep mode and then it becomes unresponsive and I have to do a hard reset.

I did the restore new last night as well. Did you re-synch with itunes?? Apps?

I have kept mine clean thus far and no locks ups yet.
