Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

No, I put a few songs on it to get me back and forth to work, and I put the main apps I use back on it. I was hoping that wouldn't be the problem because I haven't downloaded any apps since installing 3.1 so all the apps should be working fine. One thing I haven't done is activate the Genius Mixes because the first time I updated to 3.1 they were killing my phone's speed.

I may try again tonight and keep it clean because my dad is joining my plan this weekend and I was planning on giving him my phone and me buying the 3GS but I can't give him a screwed up phone. thanks apple!

    I am running active synch.....

I recently loaded two apps....weather bug and a card game.....fresh....

The tech last night seemed to ask questions about active synch....I do not think that is the problem since it is Push from exchange....

There appears to be some kind of issue with releasing a 3G data connection...

When you do the hard reset (pressing sleep button + home screen buttons), connect it to the computer first -- be patient and let it fully boot up. I had the same issue with the freezing/unresponsiveness and I tried the hard reset and it didn't work until I did it again, but connected to the computer. I had a similar situation with the very first iPhone two years ago when it froze on me. Tech support walked me through that recommendation back then and it seemed to work for me this time as well.

Well....not that it'll make a difference with my post, but reading here at least allowed my medications to be scaled back to "pre-3.1" levels - thought I was going nuts.

Phone simply stops responding; Cannot call out, cannot receive, browser stops, mail stops, everything stops!!!! Battery indicator goes from 80% to 25% faster than my car goes from 0-to-60 (about 4 hours). No sudden reboots or anything else but it's frustrating enough. No issues until 3.1 came along.

And worse of all, I work for a large automotive firm that does it's own trading, which I support, and this morning, one of our main systems went off-line. My Director was none too happy that he and several users called and my phone went right to VM - they had to page me. Once I rebooted, all 17 calls showed up.

I have 4 co-workers who are considering the 3G/S. I have 'nicely' told them to hold off until 3.1 has been fixed....HA!!! By then, we'll all have become angels and won't need these mundane tools (we'll just swoop down anywhere/anytime and deal with whatever)

I tried your tip and I hope it works. You're the first person to actually have an answer that sounds like it might actually resolvethe issue. Thanks for the advise and if it doesn't work I jsut hope that when the open up MMS it comes as an update that has a patch included that fixes this ridiculous problem. Thanks again ppbox

I was having most all the problems listed (16GB 3G model), did a restore as new phone and still had the problems. Took it into the local Apple Store and they replaced it (with another 3G) citing it was a hardware problem, don't really care if it's true or not. If your phone is under warranty I'd quite waiting for an update and get it replaced.

Same issue. Updated just before I left for a 4 day business trip. Random shutdowns with a reboot being the only resolution.

I gave up trying to help people to revert back to 3.0. I thought this was a user support forum, a place where one could get advice from another. But for some reason this forum does not seem that way, it has turned into a forum of nothing but complaints and no resolution.

The temporary solution had been posted by tottoroo02, myself and other users. This is the last time I'm going to say this; iPhone users the only way your iPhone life will be back to normal is going back to 3.0. Fix your own problem for now while Apple decides to take action, however keep posting formal feedback.

That link is the easiest way to roll back. But you have to have Windows or a virtual windows machine. There is no JBING involved and it does not work for the 3GS. Good day everyone.

Yep same problem here! Early hours of the morning and the phone went dead! I thought it was completely dead and thought I had no phone, panicked! Then managed to get it working with hard reset.

Also had loads other problems since 3.1 update, the most annoying one for me being my wifi not connecting to router every five minutes and not remembering the password!! Router is fine and I know it's the phone.

Also had slowdowns, bad network (3g & edge) connections, sounds that repeat twice (like SMS sounds etc) and a weird thing where the volume display pops up randomly when I haven't even pressed a volumebutton!?!

Really not good enough apple! iPhone costs me and everyone else a lot of money.

Apple would have to be previewed the possibility to directly make the downgrade with itunes so affording to people to work with own telephone since they are not sure of the software that they publish.

The guilt of the problems is also of who it has the versions beta and not them well test.

When I did a "Restore", and told it to set up as a "New Phone",
my problems stopped. The problem may not be with 3.1 as
much as it is with the "upgrade" itself.

Same problem for me yesterday. I had to hard reboot to fix it. Plus, the 3.1 upgrade has jumbled up all my hundreds of podcasts and the response time is really slow. It's a poor upgrade.
