Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I boycotted apple products for so long due to the horrible and obligatory iTunes (worst software ever made). I finally cracked when the 3G came down in price, and enough of my friends had showed me some of the coolest apps. I knew beforehand that the call quality was terrible, that it dropped a much higher percentage of calls than my BB on the same provider, and that I'd have to bear the burden of iTunes bondage. But, I'd deal with these woes to get the amazing features unique to the iPhone.

This botched update is worse than I can remember any vendor releasing in recent past, including M$. That it's not even being addressed by Apple is ludicrous. I hope that someone (looking at you, google) comes out with something competitive to the iPhone so I can resume my Apple boycott and just chalk up this one indiscretion to poor judgment caused by severe phone envy and a lack of viable alternatives.

In the meantime, I guess I'll try the rollback suggested above via the youtube link (thanks for that).

I have the same issue... I downloaded and installed the iPhone OS 3.1 update about a week and a half ago and have since run into a recurring problem where the phone mysteriously locks up with a black screen. In this state, the phone is unresponsive and will only return to life if I do a reset by holding down the sleep + home keys. I recently noticed that the phone is just locked up and is in a coma like state. When in the coma, the phone heats up and remains warm, like it's working hard and caught in some never ending loop, until it eventually returns to life, which can take some time (sometimes over an hour). When it returns to life, it works as normal, but with a much drained battery life.

This problem is frustrating, because half the time I don't realize that the phone is in a coma until I need to use it (probably missing calls, push notifications, etc. all while just locked up in my pocket).

Well, just had my first shutdown since turning off the fraud warning. Guess I'll have to find a way to de-upgrade down to 3.0 on a mac until my genius appt on Thursday. Hope someone finds a fix soon!!

Started having this problem after 3.1 update. Has happened about 12 times. Talked with an Apple Expert this morning and was told to try a restore without using a backup. If that doesn't fix it, go to the Apple store for a replacement. Asked if a fix was in the works and couldn't really tell me there was. They know of the problem, but no fix. He said it was a software issue. Really don't want to start over again and lose everything on the phone. Apple, how about fixing the problem without so easily willing to give a new phone. Battery time has diminished and more apps are crashing. Shouldn't this be addressed before an update is issued? You know that if it were Steve Jobs' phone, the problem would be fixed pronto.

I'm having the same random shutdown issue (the one that needs a hard reset to fix) on top of a few other problems that I did not have before the 3.1 update, including:

    1. My calendars would not update to iphone. (I reinstalled 3.1 and this fixed the issue)

    2. The smart playlist that updates the newest 99 songs I have imported is completely wrong on my iphone. However it is correct in the following instances: on my regular itunes playlists AND on my iphone when viewed though itunes. Very annoying.

    3. The battery indicator seems to stick at a full charge, then dies instantly. This caused me to be late to work today.

I'm also having the same problem, this is frustrating. Apple should not release any update without complete testing.

I hope Apple will release fix soon.

I called Apple Support yesterday about this issue, they transferred me to someone else and the woman told me they have heard about this "coma" issue and the woman made me an appointment at the Genius Bar, and told me they want the iPhones that are doing this for diagnostic purposes because they aren't sure why this is happening. So she said I wold have my iPhone swapped for a new one.

This evening I went to the Apple store, they swapped it and that was that, I now have a new 3G iPhone.

I posted last week that so far only 'coma' incident with my 3g.

Did noticed somrthing odd last night. I attended a meeting with poor cell reception. So I turned on the airplane mode. During the course of the 90 min meeting the phone became very warm and the battery started to run down.

Is this also a side effect of the 3.1 update?

Same here. Happened a couple of days ago. Freaked me out, given that this was on a iPhone 3G which I had just replaced earlier. It's odd how the 3Gs are so bug-ridden but the 2Gs are stable and secure

I might as well chime in...same thing here. Happens on average 2-3 times per day. Sometimes more. I tried restoring the phone and that didn't fix the problem.

I am having the same problem; my once very nice 3G iphone just slips into a coma for no reason! As well as poor battery life, all as a result of the 3.1 update. I once was very happy and proud of my 3G iphone not anymore! Please Steve! Fix this! Make me proud once again!

    Hi,

Does anyone have multiple Calendar groups for a single MobileMe account on the iphone? ...

After following this thread and attempting the redownload and restoring as a new user the "iPhone Coma" still happened.

Two days ago I checked my calendar groups and discovered MobileMe had triple entries. By turning the affected accounts calendar on and off twice the MobileMe calendar groups were restored to the single collection of calendars as expected. Oddly enough I have not experienced a COMA required the hard reset since.

I have TomTom for iPhone. I will be testing further to see if this heats up the phone cause a coma.
