Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Just to put my 2 cents in, I have begun experiencing the same "coma" in the past week, usually 1-2x a day. However, I updated to 3.1 when it first came out. So why the delay in misbehaving? Typically when I find it unresponsive it is somewhat warm and at times the battery is significantly drained as if it is working continuously with the screen off.

Unfortunately I don't have an Apple store here to make an appointment with a Genius. Will they provide a replacement at AT&T stores?

Sorry to reply my rather long post, but I wanted to follow up on my happenings here. I ended up making a Genius Bar appointment for the 22nd at 8:20PM EST at a different Apple Store location here in Atlanta, because the original one I had gone too had no available reservations for the 22nd and last time I went I had to do standby, and that was a pain.

So I got to the Apple Store and checked in and waited patiently for my turn. When I was called to the Genius Bar I explained my situation again, adding in the details that transpired during my last visit. She was familiar with the 3.1 OS complaints, and asked a few basic questions about the device and ran a diagnostic on it. After some brief chit-chat (she was really helpful... and fairly cute too), she concluded that since my device was in a new-like condition that I hadn't abused the iPhone, and it had to be a hardware/software issue that restoring couldn't fix. To boot, she also added it was unacceptable that I had to wait in the standby line at the other Apple Store location to merely have a Genius Bar rep do a fruitless restore AND not inform me that my Launch-Day iPhone 3G was out of warranty. As such, she announced that she's approved me for a free iPhone 3G replacement, did some paperwork, and said as soon as they get a 16GB iPhone 3G in stock it's mine (should be within a few days, they're all out).

I'm stoked! This visit could not have been more satisfying (well, unless I actually got the phone)! She said that the replacement will hopefully come with 3.0.1 and she would NOT recommend updating until a fix is announced, and in the meantime the new replacement has a complimentary 90 warranty if anything else goes wrong.

Again, I could not be more satisfied with the way this was handled. Kudos, Apple. Now get us a fix and I'll be peachy-keen.

I charged the phone last night after turning off wifi, bluetooth, push and fetch. The battery bar was full all day until on the way home from work I turned push and fetch back on. About 3 hours later the phone was dead, dead, dead and required a power source to regain any signs of life. Certainly not a solution, but I'd be interested to know how many others have experienced the same thing?

An important bit of info would be that I have an Exchange, MobileMe and additional IMAP mail account in use.

Same issue for me. After updating to 3.1 iPhone randomly shuts down.

I have tried to put push notifcation off. I have less hangup problems now.
    2 hangups in 3 day's first is was 2 -4 times a day.

Me2, just take the headphones out the jack whilst listening to music causes the iphone to freeze.

previously this action would cause the ipod to pause the track.

    I'm getting a nokia.

So I've opened a bug with Apple, and they have actually been trying to obtain info that will help them resolve the issue.

    Stuff that I've noticed:

    - Restores make no difference, even if you set your phone up as a new phone and don't apply your backup. I did this and my iPhone still hangs.
    - The majority of the comas that I get seem to occur after I've pause the music player. When I try to resume, I'll notice that the phone is in its coma state.
    - Sometimes I think the phone enters the coma state without me noticing (i.e., on occasions when I don't resume my music/podcast listening). An after effect of this is that I'll notice that the playback position of the podcast that I was listening to is reset.

Apple engineering has requested that I provide it with device logs and more recently stackshots. Both needed to be taken whilst the phone is in a coma state. A stackshot is taken by pressing simultaneously on the home button and the volume button. Sync your iPhone with iTunes then look in the following folder for stackshots ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<DeviceName>/ . Stackshots look to me like a list of processes currently running on the phone, but with some extra info there.

IMO the best thing that we could do is to raise bugs with Apple. We have evidence that the bugs are indeed being looked at and responded to. When raising the bug, provide device logs and stackshots of when the device has been in a coma state. This might be a tricky bug to resolve and it might get resolved quicker if we can provide Apple with a ton of evidence.

What a pain in the a...: OS 3.01 was great, resolved several issues (exchange, MMS...) and even let my battery last longer. Everything just as smoooth as can be. And now THIS :-(((

    After updating to 3.1...
    • backups after connecting to iTunes take like forever
    • iPhone (3G 16GB) intermittently won't respond to tactile commands for some seconds
    • iPhone goes deepfreeze/coma every now and then, especially when battery level is at about 20%. Then won't wake up (no response to pressing any button) and needs hard reset to come to live again.

WORST OF ALL: To people trying to call you it seems you're just not answering the phone, text messages won't get through either AND you won't notice either one happened after you finished rebooting the phone! No missed calls shown, no belated text messages drooling in!

Worst Apple OS update experience ever.
Get that stuff fixed and get OS 3.1.1 out SOON!

Yeah I wanted to add that too... The iPhone seems to get really hot now quite regularily where as it never did before. If it's some sort of processing loop then it's going to be wearing out the hardware quicker too by being hot all the time.

Thanks for your post, Paul. Nice to see a message with some useful, helpful, original information in it amongst the hundreds of "me too" and "what youtube video?" entries!

Your comment about sending as much DETAIL to Apple as possible is spot on. It's clear they're aware of the problem and that they will be working hard to find out what's gone wrong.

Of course it's not acceptable for a bad update to have slipped through. Certainly their PR angle is lousy in not putting out a statement about the issues (the comment about whether this affects their contractual position with the phone companies may have been insightful). Nevertheless, I'm certain there are plenty of hard working technical folk burning the midnight oil trying to find out what on earth's happening, and purely getting shouty does nothing to help. Console logs, stackshots, swap-outs on really really bad cases, these are all things that can provide them with extra diagnostic information so we get our devices working faster.

    Thanks again.

Having the same "coma" issues and have also just opened a bug report with Apple where I included all my recent crash logs. I'm sure they'll get this one sorted reasonably quickly.

Count me in. I have been running 3.1 since it was released and just today I have begun to have issues. I put a minimum of 4+ hours of talk time on my iPhone each weekday and just now this issue started. Only thing I have added is the Zyrtec Allergy App, but I doubt that is the culprit. I'm deleting it anyway.
