Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Mine just started turning off last night... The only time it doesn't turn off is if it charging. I restored it last night and I thought it might have taken care of it but NO LUCK. I am going to the genius bar today. Hopefully they can help. Sadly my warranty was up four days ago

    Wish me luck!

Mine started turning off and going into "coma" several times a day. Battery life is very unpredictable. Went from around 60% to 0% red zone in maybe an hour last night, when I wasn't using it.
Can I expect a new phone if it's been less than a year? Or is this all just another update away from being fixed?

    2nd update

After a bad day yesterday with close to a dozen comas, I finally sat down and reverted my phone back to 3.0.1. Instructions here: http://spicycauldron.com/2009/09/14/how-to-rollback-iphone-software-3-1-to-3-0-1 / (note to windows users, you do not need to use quickpwn like the instructions say simply hold down the home key and power buttons for 15 seconds, then the power button for 2 seconds to reset the phone and you're done).

I haven't had a problem since I reverted. And on top of that the sluggishness that I was experiencing in the iPod app is now gone. The fact that, if you contact Apple support or a Genius bar, you still stand a good chance of being told that your problems are hardware related (and consequently not covered if you're out of warranty) is absolutely inexcusable on Apple's part.

On the 11th of September I updated my phone to the 3.1 since than my phone has been weird. So I went into the genius bar and told them that my phone was being unresponsive and randomly shuts down 3-5 times A day. The tech looked at my phone n said the reason why it may be happeng is because the inside of the detector that detects water damaged is alittle red!!! This phone never gave me problems until I updatedit, also my phone has not been near any water or steam !! I'm sooo aggravated now I need help to put my phone back together cause they are not helpful at the genius bar!! Please help what should I do ??

Well, after trying every suggestion except the rollback to 3.0.1 I can confirm that none of them are the magic bullet. I've resorted to pushing the home button every 15 minutes to make sure the phone is still functioning. I'm sure that isn't the best thing for the mechanics of the button but it beats missing calls. I've logged the bug with Apple and suggest everyone do likewise.

Any hope that the iTunes 9.0.1 update will help?

Hmm, maybe it is just as well that I can't seem to download the update in iTunes! Halfway through it just stops (made several attempts), found this entirely by accident, since I was actually looking for a reason the update wasnt working!

Maybe my net connection might be being useless? Or Maybe Apple have pulled the update? If thats the case, it would be nice, rather than waste time half downloading the update before stopping it, to maybe not allow me to start it in the first place!

I did the update last week with no problems until yesterday when I had a total shutdown and doing the reset did nothing. About 10 minutes later, the iphone decided to turn on for whatever reason but a few minutes later it went into a trance-like state where whatever I pushed either froze for a few seconds or the screen went black again and I was back to a hard reset, which failed to initialize until 10 minutes later. Then I got a message, "This Accessory is not made for the iPhone" blah blah blah, and the only thing it could have been was the Mophie Juice Pack Air case. I read that that message has been happening also since the 3.1 update. I somehow resolved it by cleaning the dock connectors with compressed air and the message has not returned. That's a wait and see matter if it returns.

Today, I shut down once. Not running as hot as yesterday. I resynched with iTunes. So far I'm okay but I'm finding that whatever I try to access is very very slow to respond. So ready to roll back to 3.0! (Kinda like the bad upgrade to Snow Leopard. What's happening to Apple these days? It's why I tried to leave Windoze behind!)

I have logged a bug report, and await further news, if any.

There may well be a potential issue for Apple here which may go some way towards explaining why there has been little said publicly by Apple. Although I am not a product liability lawyer (and do bear in mind that things are somewhat different here in the UK to the similar field in the US), it seems to me that the primary purpose for which the iPhone is marketed and sold is for buyers of the product to use it as a mobile telephone / PDA / music player hi-brid (as evidenced by Apple's advertising). If the hardware / software is not functioning properly (and that includes apps vetted by Apple to run on the phone) so as to enable the use of the phone - for the purposes for which it is sold and advertised - properly, then it seems to me that it may well be argued - and I haven't yet looked too closely at the technical legal issues here yet - that the phone may not fit for purpose. If it is not fit for purpose, then there may well be the possibility of legal recourse for disgruntled customers.

So, yesterday afternoon I did turned the fraud warning off. I had one coma afterwards but found out I was supposed to sync it afterwards. Last night I synced it to my mac and I haven't had a coma problem since and my battery is tremendously better! I have 2 hrs of use on 3G and 8 hours standby and have 85% battery. This time yesterday at would be below 20!

It really is pathetic. This latest bug has totally destroyed my faith in Apple - based on their refusal to accept the problem and do something about it and try to blame theur customers instead by suggesting we have done something wrong when installing.

I have had to hard reset numerous times (thus losing all rented movies and I cannot restore those so I have lost £10!!!) and the battery life is suddenly appalling. It dies in less than half the time it used to on standby. It is quite pathetic the excuses and nonsense Apply are coming out with. The 3.1 update is clearly rife with bugs and I wish I'd never downloaded it as everything was working fine beforehand.

I am a new user to this forum, but add me to the list. My wife has a 16 gig 3G and I have a 32 gig 3GS. After installing O/S 3.1, we have random lockups, decreased battery life in both phones and wierd GPS issues (specifically with the MobileMe find my iPhone feature) with the 3G. Is there no QA department at Apple when they release these updates? A cell phone that randomly locks up for no apparent reason is totally unacceptable.

Battery life is my major issue - charging 4 times a day, turned off push email no difference, rebooted exchange server no difference, removed Exchange - re added no change.
Come on Apple fess up.... poor release. Microsoft used to do this to us and we switched ... you are making them look good......

Add me to the list, too. This is very aggravating, and its seriousness can't be overemphasized.

("Sorry I missed your call -- my iPhone was locked-up." "Aren't they from Apple? Not possible! Sorry, but the freelance assignment I was going to offer you will now go to someone reliable, not someone who makes-up excuses.")
