Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Same problem here. It is very random - no problems for X amount of days, then suddenly it will shut down 1, 2, 3x a day for 1 or 2 days, then back to no problems for a while. Extremely frustrating, especially since my iPhone is used for business.

Yep I have the same issue! I told all my family members who have an iPhone NOT to update the OS to 3.01...My phone randomly shuts down and I've missed allot of phone calls because of it. Its happened ever since the update. I'm wondering if Apple is going to fix this with a 3.2 update of some sort b/c its quite irritating. I would do a restore but I don't have the time at the moment.

Same problem here. Is there any sort of error log file on the iPhone that we can look at to maybe pinpoint the problem?

I think I'm just going to downgrade to 2.x until 3.1.1 or whatever comes out.

More testing: turning Push off does not prevent the freezes. (I also feel like when the phone DOES wake up it's slightly delayed, enough to scare me for a moment. But maybe that's just the overall sluggishness/hitchiness that 3.x has always had on non-3GS devices.)

Theory: does Apple rely too much on developer testing, and not enough on testing by dedicated testers who are ONLY testers?

Developers probably care only about their OWN app, and other issues they don't have time to worry about. They just shrug and figure "it's a beta, it will be fixed."

Maybe Apple's iPhone team sees the huge numbers of developers using their beta releases and feels a false sense of confidence when problem reporting is low? Get each OS in the hands of 500 NON-developers for testing, whose only priority is to report OS bugs, and I bet they'd get a different picture.

    (We'll never know of course.)

WOW so many pages of about the same thing. Now youd think Apple would get the clue that this problem wont go away and is getting worst every day. But maybe they are waiting tell ATT friday MMS then have any update. Anyways i went to the Iphone Feedback page and filled out a bug report. http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html maybe if everyone sent one or more to them, they'd do something.

theres so many pages i think i lost were my post went LOL, Ever since i updated to OS 3.1 my iphone was working fine for about a week then started to go into Coma State and have to hard reboot it with sleep&home button. But it only happens once a day and so i know when it does, and it is random. Other then that im able to make calls and recieve calls with out any problems (knock on wood) but most the time my phone is in WiFi mode and not much in 3G. My Iphone is 3G 16GB not JB

After multiple shutdowns, poor battery performance, and no response from Apple, I've decided to switch back to 3.0.1 two days ago.

The moment that was done, the iPhone felt much better right away. One day later, the battery performance was what it was supposed to be. And now, after two days with 3.0.1, I've had no unexpected shutdowns.

Well thats a first. I posted 20 minutes ago that I had reported this issue to the MacCast podcast to raise prominence of this issue outside of this forum and my post got deleted!!!

Apple you are behaving like children, grow up and just acknowledge to your loyal customers there is a problem and what your doing about it!

Unbelievable, they will probably delete this as well as they obviously have yellow stripes running right down their spines.

    For what it's worth.
I tried restore, but that didn't help.
I called Apple, they said that I should try the new phone install again (Or whatever it was called).
I backed everything up, was sure I had data that I knew would be lost (I had a secure password app).

I went into settings and chose 'erase all content and settings' under 'reset'. Took a couple of hours to complete. After it was done, I had essentially a factory fresh phone at 3.1. I added a few apps, setup mail. So far, about 2 days later, no shutdowns. Since it was intermittent before, I can't say for sure it hasn't shutdown when I haven't been checking. When my phone failed to start, I would randomly check, it would sometimes allow me to restart after 5-10 minutes without a forced restart.
I do notice some of the slowness I experienced after 3.1 was installed seems to be gone.

Just got off the phone w/ apple support.

Their suggestion is to restore the iPhone (duh) and see if the problem occurs again. If it does to call them back/visit an apple store. The guy pretty much told me I could get a new iPhone if it keeps happening, but I've got a feeling its caused by the newest software update.

They told me if the factory reset didn't work, it would be a hardware problem. My phone is out of warranty as of last month.

I had this happen just once right after I did the update. It took awhile to get it to reboot. I came in from outside after mowing and it was off. I didn't realize what happened. I'm also seeing that the battery life is running low FAST since the 3.1 update.
