Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Well after years of Apple slagging off Microsoft and Vista, Apple have got themselves one **** of a problem and it's called iPhone!!!!! He who laughs first laughs last!!!!!! If I was Microsoft I'd be all over this like a rash and have ads out in every country and smash Apple for it's ignorance. What gets me really angry is that Apple haven't said a single word like Sorry guys we know and we are sorry but we are working on it! Nope just dead silence, that's the best this arrogant company can do. I have lost all faith in this company now!

I actually am (selfishly) glad there are this many people who are so upset at Apple right now and are threatening Apple (not really, since Apple doesn't read these because this is a user forum for users to provide answers) that they will switch to a different phone (that will probably have just as many, if not more problems). The truth is, this isn't a huge issue for most people, and if you consider your phone completely useless, I'm sure you could make an appointment at the Apple store and they would be happy to exchange it. But if everyone in this forum who has said they will go with a different phone actually switch (and switch providers), that would free up some much needed network space that has since been clogged since the 3G came out. Anyone who had the original iPhone when it first came out knows that there were far less people who had them and AT&T's network worked a lot better. I miss those days.

Anyway, the point of this rant is that if you haven't left feedback through the form on the support page, Apple will not hear you, and you shouldn't be complaining that they are "doing nothing about it." In my experience, Apple has been quick to fix known issues without publicly releasing statements about it, especially when it comes to the iPhone considering almost every Apple employee owns and uses and iPhone. I have faith that this will be resolved and we will see an update by the end of the month. I am not going to give up on Apple now after years of good experiences because of the first issue I've had with an iPhone since my original.

Leave feedback, and this issue will be fixed. Don't leave feedback, and they will take their sweet time.

    I agree with Morgan Adams1.
Apple mistakes to giving to the developer the beta versions, would have to be to us people who are alone beta tester.
Bad management of iphone the software.

Posted a couple of weeks ago that I called Apple Support and that they were "unaware" of the problem. Got tired of the crashes and called again...same thing - "unaware". I informed the support guru that there are over 78 pages in a thread of this problem and 76 pages in another similar thread.

He was clueless. He also had no idea of when a new update would take place.

    Gotta love it.

I have the exact same problem! The first time i went into the apple store in regent street and they said the battery was dead! This is strange as i had the phones battery at 100% 5hours earlier and only on standby. The second time the phone was only 3 hours off a full charge. I'm not happy with the battery life at all and all this since iphone update 3.1

I am having the same problem since the beta 3.1 (I'm a developer). One thing that I noticed recently, at least in my case, is that the phone vibrates before it gets locked (I keep it silent), and although it does not wakes when you press a button, I don't have to reboot it. It will be functional again a minute or two later. Since I discover this I am trying to catch it during one of this mysterious lock episodes to see if it will awake to an incoming call or not. ever since I noticed this I stopped rebooting it and it has worked about 3 or 4 times now.

Add me to the list: Half a dozen random shutdowns. Is there a way to roll back to 3.0.1?

    Yes, this the easiest way.

Just grab the firmware from somewhere else other than the link.

OK, thanks for the input. And when that happens, are you also experiencing the no need to reboot? Basically the phone comes back to like after a couple of minutes?

Some times. I'd say 3-10 minutes it will come back. A couple of times, whether I'm impatient or whatever, I've had to do a reset.

Currently running 3.1 and my phone will forget to receive calls and text messages from time to time. Only way to fix it is to power off then power back on. I then receive all the calls I've missed as well as texts.

I sent my Feedback to Apple.com on 9/17/2009: (1) My iPhone 3G started to randomly shut-off after upgrading to version 3.1.1 on 9/9/09. Neither the Sleep/Wake button nor the Home button alone would wake it up. It would require a reset by holding both buttons together to power it back on. Or, the iPhone will wake up on its own after about 5-10 minutes. (2) iPhone feels warm to the touch even when the screen is off. (3) After it has turned on, it searches for a cell signal for an unusually long time and displays either No Service or just AT&T with no Edge or 3G.

On 9/17/09, all the fixes suggested by AT&T (Turn on 3G, Power off/on, checked cell towers) & Apple Support 800-My-iPhone (Power off/on daily, perform Restore) failed to fix the problems. 800-My-iPhone also kept reminding me of the limited support I will get because I did not purchase the AppleCare Plan.

I witnessed a total of 10 shut-down episodes. The Genius Bar replaced my iPhone on 9/18/2009. It is still on OS 3.0 and has been working normally. (Thank you to the Genius who didn't make me jump through any more hoops!)
