Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I posted 15 pages back or so and wanted to add that all ~1,100 songs have just disappeared from my 3G 3.1 5 minutes ago. I don't know when during the past several hours or so they vaporized, I just opened the iPod to listen to some music at my desk. Phone as been inactive for several hours. According to "About" I have 7.1Gb used and something like 100mb available, but zero music, zero video. iPod only shows a recent song I bought on the phone yesterday. All other music, playlists, etc. are gone. I sync from my mac at home, so a faulty sync isn't the issue.

Apparently the music just disappeared from the iPod interface but still resides in the phone's memory. poof

Will be adding this latest chapter in yet another bug report. http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Fortunately this has only happened to me 4 times since the update. I have noticed that when I finally get it to reboot, the camera app will have taken a screen shot of the phone.

I'm going to wait to update my wife's 3G.

Yeah, I've had a few mystery photos. I chalked it up to me pressing both buttons randomly trying to get it to wake up.

I'm wondering if the OS is just busy doing something and the button sequence happens to get through at the right time.

After posting on this thread I was contacted by an Apple staff member asking for the iphone console log I mentioned and suggesting I visit a Genius at the nearest Apple store. Visited on Sunday, Genius asked for log, read it and and logged the problem as confirmed on the system, even though the phone did not lock up in the store - then told me to restore the phone as new. I did that and experienced a further three comas/black-outs by the phone. Captured another console log and visited the Apple Store today. They replaced the phone - which was purchased over a year ago. The replacement was still running 3.0.1 - I deleted the existing 3.1 ipsw file on my mac; re-downloaded it and upgraded the new phone. So far, no lock-ups.

I too have experienced a VERY quickly draining battery; system reporting that I have full bars and in a 3G area, but unable to text or call; and random shutdowns. I have restarted the phone and in one situation, the phone was not usable for about 20 minutes. After about 20 minutes, everything seemed to work again. These 'freezes' and lack of usability periods are pretty predictable for me. An update, or test, or patch is preferred.

I look forward to the solution!

Restore did not help my phone. I have tried everything still no luck with the battery life, freezing or random shutdowns.

Well, so after a banner day with just one coma, early on in the morning which I caught almost immediately after getting to the office and hard-resetting immediately, it turns out that after a day of sitting in my pocket, the battery of the iphone is now nearly completely drained. I had previously thought that the battery depletion was linked to the comas (i.e., something that happens while it's busy thinking and not listening to me is what's causing the battery to drain), but it seems like maybe the two things are not completely correlated? Guess I need to carry a charger at all times... Grrrrrr.

Funny that OS 3.1 still isn't a listed OS on the discussion forums, btw...

Again, my iPhone got warm to the touch and the battery drained. There is a program that is running in the background accessing the cpu 100% of the time. As an embedded programmer I know this. I wish Apple would fix this and the lockup issue. Please, having to live with ATT as my isp is bad enough.

My 3G just started acting up. It shut down two days ago and twice today. I rebooted ok. Is there anything to keep it from doing this?

Just wanted to add my name to the many responses here about the shutdown/freeze issues with latest update. It's getting really old.

Same problem. Locks up 2-3 times a day. Battery life is also unpredictable and inconsistent. Have restored from back up and as a new phone with no help.

Just had to add my voice to the chorus as I am also experiencing this probably, sometimes multiple times a day and it is completely unacceptable, if this is a known problem a fix should have been released post haste. My customer satisfaction is eroding by the day.
